CMSS Newsletter October 2015 OVERAGE REGISTRATION MORATORIUM: DEADLINE EXTENDED As breeders should be aware, the Society announced at the start of the year that we would be putting in place a moratorium on overage registration fees for CMSS members until October 31st, 2015. The rationale behind this program was to encourage members to get caught up on registrations and transfers ahead of our change of registry service to Holstein Canada in 2016. The Secretary-Manager has been in contact with Holstein Canada officials in recent weeks to prepare for registry service provision in 2016. While progress is being made, there is the potential for a short period of time at the start of the new year where completing registrations and transfers might not be available. As such, we are encouraging members to get as caught up as possible on registry work in advance of the change-over. The deadline for the overage registration moratorium has now been extended to December 1st, 2015. If you have work to be completed, please send your information to Canadian Livestock Records Corp. before December 1st to make sure that it gets completed before CLRC s Christmas shut down. Under the moratorium, rates are: Registrations on animals 0 to 6 months: Registrations on animals 6 to 12 months: Registrations on animals over 12 months: $18 + tax $18 + tax (reduced from $26 + tax) $26 + tax (reduced from $40 + tax) Reduced rates are applicable to CMSS members. Membership rates for first time members are only $40 + tax. Additional details on the new service to be provided by Holstein Canada will be made available before the end of the year. Stay tuned for more details. We encourage members to take advantage of this opportunity to get caught up to date on registrations. Your membership and registration fees are essential income for the Society in funding the breed promotion and breed improvement programs that we offer. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact Ryan Barrett, Secretary-Manager, at (902) 439-9386 or milking.shorthorn@gmail.com.

From the Secretary s Desk: Strickley True Perfection semen available The CMSS has a limited supply of semen available on the UK Milking Shorthorn sire Strickley True Perfection. This bull is already proven in the UK and is positive for type and components. More info on True Perfection is available in this newsletter. Semen is available for $25/dose and is stored at Eastgen and will be released to your Eastgen/CIAQ/Westgen account, or alternate shipping arrangements can be made. Additional Phone Number for CMSS Office I have recently added a new home phone number that you can reach me at on evenings and weekends. That number is: (902) 200-1396 During the day, my cell number (902) 439-9386 is the best number to reach me at. However, please feel free to add this new number to your contact list. Hair Sample Collection for Genomic Gene Bank For the past couple of years, I have been collecting hair samples from Milking Shorthorns across the country in an effort to build up a bank of samples for future use in genomic research. Any future research into genomic evaluations for our breed is going to require the testing of a large number of females to build a sufficient genetic base for reliable prediction. Therefore, we re trying to build up a bank of samples to ensure that we have representation for diverse pedigrees. If you would like to submit samples for the genetic bank, please pull a sample of tail hair and send it in a sealed envelope for each animal, including the animal s name and registration number. Samples can be sent to me any time and I will hold them for future use. Materials available for local promotions Do you have an opportunity to promote Milking Shorthorns in your local area? Perhaps you just have a neighbour who would like information on the breed? Maybe you are hosting a farm tour? If so, feel free to contact me for: Copies of The Improver Brochures (English or French) Pens Sire sheets and other breed info When useful, we also have a pop-up banner that is lightweight and can be shipped for small displays at meetings or trade shows. We also have a larger table-top display that can also be used to create an attractive booth at various meetings or shows. New Syndicates Sire - Koopycrest Anecdote-P The latest bull in the Semex - CMSS Syndicates young sire program is Koopycrest Anecdote-P. He will be available for sale after November 16th, 2015. Anecdote-P was bred by Shawn Koopmans of Picton, ON. He is the first son of Oceanbrae Ironman-P to enter AI and his dam, Koopycrest Logic Ali Anne VG-87, is a former class leader for production as well as Hon. Mention Grand Champion at the 2014 National Show. The maternal grand dam of Anecdote-P is Koopycrest Mocha Ali Apple, the 2014 Canadian Cow of the Year. A flyer on the bull is included in this newsletter. A few shares are still available...please contact me immediately if you are interested in purchasing a share for $250, which includes 15 doses of semen as well as a share in royalties in the bull.
