2 A. Y. 2014/2015
Dear Students, first of all, welcome. The Alma Mater Studiorum-University of Bologna, which you will soon learn more about, is a University that is as old as it is new. Founded in 1088, it is considered to be the oldest university in the Western world. Today, in Bologna and on the four Romagna campuses (Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini), the Alma Mater Studiorum continues to pave the way for innovation through an increasingly rich variety of study programmes, increasingly cutting-edge research and an increasingly broad international outlook. Our course catalogue offers a wide range of diversified programmes, from first-cycle (3-year) to second-cycle and single cycle degrees, post-graduate and specialisation programmes, aiming to ensure the personal and future professional growth of its students. For academic year 2014/2015, the programme catalogue includes a wide variety of subjects: 207 degree programmes, of which 92 first cycle (three years), 103 second cycle (two years) and 12 single cycle (five or six years); 52 international degree programmes, some of which are run with other foreign universities; 27 degree programmes held in the English language. You can count on a wide range of services to support and facilitate your study path: from initial to ongoing guidance and advice, from the right to education - guaranteed through financial support to deserving and low-income students - to recreational and sports activities, foreign language learning and facilitations for international exchanges and studies abroad, from the tutoring and study support network to assistance in entering the job market. Every year over 15,500 students graduate at Bologna. Based on the data produced by Alma Laurea, the statistics tell us that almost 50% of all our graduates (first, second and single cycle) are in paid employment within one year after graduation, and after three years this figure reaches 70%. The statistics also tell us that 84% of our graduates would choose to attend the University of Bologna again. We are well aware that the current period is not easy for you, indeed it is one of the most critical of the past few years, marked by worries over the uncertain or even worse future. Remember however that a degree is a great advantage in terms of both employment and salary, as well as a symbol of the inalienable right to knowledge that must be available to all. The choice you are about to make concerns not only you and your families but the whole country, which has a vital and urgent need for a new managerial class to drive our cultural and technical fields. The country needs you: your mind, your heart and your hands, because the future lies with you. Do not try to be better than others; try to be better than yourselves. Ivano Dionigi Rector of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna

UNIBO INTERNATIONAL Students have many opportunities for adding an international dimension to their curriculum. By taking part in the Erasmus+Studio programme students can study in a European university for between 3 and 12 months and receive financial support. For destinations beyond Europe, the main programmes are Overseas and Erasmus Mundus-Action 2. There is a financial support for these programmes. Calls for application are published well in advance, during the academic year prior to departure, and describe the requirements for participation in the different programmes. Students may apply for the Erasmus+ Studio programme from their first year. www.unibo.it/studyingabroad INTERNATIONAL STUDY PROGRAMMES The university runs a wide range of international study programmes, some of which are held entirely in English, offering students contact with students and professors from around the world and the possibility to enhance their own academic profile. The University of Bologna also offers other opportunities for adding an international dimension to academic curricula: professional master s programmes and the Summer/ Winter Schools offer a range of intensive and interdisciplinary courses open to students, young graduates from Italy and around the world, and in some cases specific professional figures. www.unibo.it/internationalprogrammes FOREIGN INTERNSHIPS Through the Erasmus Placement programme, students can carry out internships at European businesses or training and research centres for a period of 3 months. There is a financial support for these programmes. Calls for application are published well in advance. www.unibo.it/studyingabroad 31
