About Cleveland Clinic Florida Cleveland Clinic Florida s medical staff are dedicated physicians who have joined the clinic as salaried doctors to practice a different kind of medicine: Where commitment to patients, providing expert innovative care, and involvement in medical education are the goals. We work as a team, access the same electronic medical records, and cooperate to give our patients the best care. Providing excellent care to our patients is why we are here.

Chairman s Letter The Department of Ophthalmology at Cleveland Clinic Florida is comprised of a team of clinicians and staff who practice at a state-of-the-art facility. We provide comprehensive eye care and a wide range of services including cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment (medical and surgical), and diabetic eye care. We perform thousands of procedures every year and are committed to excellent outcomes. Clinical outcomes are important in objectively measuring the success of our surgical results. We constantly monitor the rate of surgical complications and visual outcomes in order to provide the best patient care. We are proud to present the clinical outcome study for 2007. In addition to clinical outcomes, world-class service is an integral part of patient care. We constantly monitor the patient s experience and implement improvements. We strive for excellence in both clinical and administrative areas. The Department of Ophthalmology at Cleveland Clinic Florida provides a wide range of eye care services, has excellent clinical outcomes, and is committed to providing world-class service. David G. Hardy, M.D., F.R.C.S.(C) Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology Cleveland Clinic Florida

2007 / Key Statistics Total Clinic Visits 32,788 Total Surgical Procedures 16,350 Total Surgeries 887 Total Cataract Procedures 817 Total Glaucoma Surgeries 45 Total Pterygium Surgeries 25 Total Laser Procedures 483 Total Yag Laser Posterior Capsulotomies 352 Total Laser Iridotomies 131 CATARACT SURGERY GLAUCOMA SURGERY Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure at the Department of Ophthalmology at Cleveland Clinic Florida. From 2007 to, a total of 817 cataract surgeries were performed. Many of these surgeries were completed as part of a combined surgical procedure in conjunction with glaucoma surgery. The most common complication was a posterior capsule tear. Glaucoma is associated with high intraocular pressure, optic nerve damage and loss of vision. Glaucoma surgery is performed in order to lower intraocular pressure and prevent progressive loss of vision. The most common procedure performed was trabeculectomy. From 2007 to a total of 45 trabeculectomies were performed. Many of these surgeries were combined with cataract surgery. The surgical outcome can be evaluated by the reduction or elimination of glaucoma medications to control intraocular pressure following surgery. Complications from cataract surgery were rare, occurring in only 2.3 percent of patients. On average, patients were able to stop more than 2 glaucoma medications following trabeculectomy.
