Cataract Removal and LifeStyle Implants
Cataract Removal Cataract removal is a straightforward, lifechanging procedure performed by our experienced surgeons and surgical team. It will improve your ability to do the things you enjoy and, in many cases, allow you to do things you couldn t before. The majority of our patients find surgery to be a pleasant and pain-free experience. Our doctors use every means possible to ensure your comfort throughout the entire procedure. What Is a Cataract? Inside the normal eye, behind the colored iris, is a clear lens called the crystalline lens. A cataract is a gradual, progressive clouding of this lens that often causes glare, yellowing of colors, and other hindrances to normal vision. Many patients describe their vision with this condition as similar to looking through film or a piece of wax paper. More than 50% of people over the age of 60 suffer from cataracts. Cataracts also exist in less mature stages in many people who are in their 50s and even 40s. Most all of us will develop cataracts of some degree during our lives. Normal Eye A healthy, clear lens allows a sharp image to fall on every part of the retina, allowing a crisp, clear image to be seen.
Cataract Removal The presence of cataracts may seem like cause for alarm, but cataracts are generally considered a normal part of the aging process. Exposure to the sun s ultraviolet light and other daily conditions are known to play a role in cataract development. Cataracts also usually run in families. When cataracts first begin to develop, they are asymptomatic and generally cause no changes in vision. Over time, patients will develop symptoms that can include: Blurred vision Difficulty while reading Glare and halos around light Difficulty driving at night Double vision (in a single eye) Yellowing of colors Blindness (in mature cataracts) Frequent changes needed in eyeglass prescriptions When these symptoms begin interfering with normal daily activities, we recommend having your cataract removed. Cataract Eye A cloudy lens scatters light, causing a hazy image to be seen.
Cataract Removal Past and Present Cataract removal has evolved greatly over the past 50 years. Cataract removal in the past restored decent vision, but the procedure required heavy, thick glasses to be worn afterwards and simply removed the eye s lens without replacing it. Modern cataract removal is a different story. Over three million Americans have their cataracts removed each year, and the procedure is renowned as being one of the safest and most predictable surgeries in modern medicine. Cataract removal is an outpatient procedure that typically takes about ten minutes to perform. Using a minimally invasive, no-shot, no-stitch, no-patch technique, we remove the cataract using phacoemulsification (with highfrequency ultrasound) or by laser cataract removal with placement of a lens implant to restore vision. Intraocular Lens Technology Some intraocular implants are designed to give patients great spectacle independence after cataract removal. We call these lenses LifeStyle lens implants. LifeStyle lenses are implanted in the same way that standard monofocal lenses are implanted, but they work quite differently in design and quality of vision restored. LifeStyle implants correct both distance vision and reading vision with minimal or no need for glasses after the cataract has been removed. Intraocular Lens Implant (IOL)
Blade-Free Laser Assisted Cataract Removal A breakthrough technique in cataract removal is now available for our patients Blade-Free Laser Assisted Cataract Removal using LenSx technology! Texas Eye and Laser Center is one of the FIRST surgical facilities in the United States to offer this state-of-the-art technology. The LenSx laser is the first FDA-approved femtosecond laser for cataract removal. Benefits of the LenSx Laser Cataract Removal Include: Blade-free procedure Increased accuracy and precision Enhanced comfort and safety Treating a Cataract? There is no proven method for reversing cataract development; therefore the best way to treat a cataract is with surgery that removes the old cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear lens implant to restore your vision. While all human eyes are similar, every eye is different in size, depth, curvature of the cornea and other key features. By taking these individual aspects into account, the LenSx laser makes laser cataract removal more precise and predictable. This results in improved visual results. This advanced technology is a partnership between you and your surgeon, computer controlled and patient friendly. The blade-free technique is less invasive to the eye with a faster visual recovery and return to normal activities earlier than in traditional cataract removal. Another advantage of laser cataract removal is its combination with the LifeStyle lens. These lenses provide superior vision to standard monofocal lens implants. This allows our patients to be less dependent on glasses and provides an improved lifestyle. Femtosecond Laser
Visual Freedom Correction Options FREE No-Blade Femtosecond Laser Cataract Removal with LenSx Option One: Standard Lens Implants Great vision with glasses Removes cloudy lens and replaces it with a new, clearer one, reducing visual haze Typically still requires the use of glasses or contacts for distance, intermediate and near vision Option Two: Reading Glasses Only Provides excellent distance vision Reading glasses are required If necessary to fine-tune your distance vision, LASIK may be performed three months postoperatively Option Three: Visual Freedom with LifeStyle Lenses Typically allows freedom from glasses for 90% of activities. Reading glasses may need to be worn occasionally Utilizes a LifeStyle Lens implant such as ReSTOR, TECNIS or Crystalens If necessary to fine-tune your vision, LASIK may be performed three months postoperatively OPTION ONE OPTION TWO My sincere thanks to Dr. Brian Ranelle and Dr. Jerry Hu and their staff for making my LifeStyle implant surgery an immediate and overwhelming success. I have never worked with a more caring, considerate, professional group of people, and I really look forward to coming back to the office because they were all so very nice to me. Rick Stacy, Stacy Furniture, Grapevine, Texas OPTION THREE Making Your Decision Cataract removal options are a big decision. Our doctors and staff will answer all of your questions and will help you choose the right option for your eyes and lifestyle.
LifeStyle Implants In the past, cataract patients generally had to depend on reading glasses or bifocals after cataract removal. Today, the AcrySof ReSTOR intraocular lens implant provides a more glassesindependent option. The ReSTOR lens is a breakthrough in premium intraocular lens technology that can provide cataract patients with a complete range of vision. Through its unique design, the ReSTOR lens allows people to see at various focal points. The result is clear vision, with limited spectacle dependence, at all ranges. Furthermore, this LifeStyle implant can be used for cataract patients who have been diagnosed with presbyopia. The ReSTOR lens has been implanted in over 20 million eyes since Clinical trials have reported that 80% of the recipients surveyed were glasses-free, and newer studies have shown up to 94% spectacle-free. Whether reading, watching television, watching a movie, or sightseeing, the ReSTOR lens can provide the proper focus you need to see clearly, most often with no need for glasses. Unlike accommodative lenses, a multifocal lens does not depend on the muscles of the eye to provide clear vision. The lens implant distributes light to points that provide focus between near and far. The TECNIS Multifocal IOL is a third-generation LifeStyle lens that provides excellent vision, near or far. This greatly reduces or eliminates the need for reading glasses or bifocals. In fact, nearly nine out of ten patients in the TECNIS FDA clinical trial reported never needing glasses after implantation.
LifeStyle Implants Over time, many people will develop presbyopia. This condition, like a cataract, is considered a natural part of the aging process. Presbyopia occurs when the eye s natural crystalline lens loses its ability to change shape this is called loss of accommodation. Presbyopia is commonly diagnosed in people in their 40s and is generally why most people will purchase their first pair of reading glasses. Crystalens is an accommodative lens implant. Designed with a hinge, this lens moves gently forward and backward, using the eye s natural focusing muscles, to give patients a complete range of vision at a single focal point. This lens mimics the eye s natural focusing action, and thusly accommodation is restored in Crystalens patients. This lens is designed to help patients gain spectacle independence. Often times, patients will find that they need to wear glasses shortly after Crystalens implantation. However, as the eye muscles resume accommodation, Crystalens patients will find that their vision actually improves over time. The more patients read and perform activities using their eyes, the faster their visual acuity improves enough to perform those activities without glasses for most things. Astigmatism is a common condition of the eye that some cataract patients have lived with their whole lives. Astigmatism is a condition wherein the cornea is curved in an unusual way. The corneal curvature is irregular resulting in blurred vision. Standard IOLs and most accommodative and multifocal IOLs cannot correct this condition. However, the Toric IOL can fix this common refractive error. The AcrySof Toric IOL is a foldable, onepiece lens that can eliminate astigmatism in our cataract patients. The special design of the Toric IOL makes it possible to reduce and usually eliminate corneal astigmatism without any added steps during cataract removal. The Toric IOL is designed specifically for cataract patients who have astigmatism. Its design provides quality distance vision independent of glasses or contact lenses. Glasses will still be needed for near and computer work.
