CHAPTER 1 Introduction Overview of the DD Management Center Installation...8 Introduction 7

Introduction Overview of the DD Management Center Installation This chapter describes the hardware and software components required at your site to perform a successful DD Management Center installation. VMware Components DD Management Center runs on either a dedicated blade on a vcenter server or a standalone VMware ESX/ESXi server machine. Configuration of the VMware virtual machine for DD Management Center is performed with the vsphere client GUI. Performing the DD Management Center Installation on page 14 describes the vsphere client installation for both types of servers. Data Domain Components All of the Data Domain systems that will be under the DD Management Center management must be in place and reachable via the network and administrator passwords are required for each. The DD Management Center software is downloaded to a local server reachable from the VMware server where the DD Management Center installation will reside. 8 EMC Data Domain Management Center 1.1 Initial Configuration Guide

CHAPTER 2 Planning the DD Management Center Environment Determining Data Domain System Requirements...10 Determining VMware Requirements...10 Planning the DD Management Center Environment 9

Planning the DD Management Center Environment Determining Data Domain System Requirements Part of the DD Management Center installation on the VMware server requires choosing a deployment type, based on the number of Data Domain systems to be managed. The three deployment types and their hardware requirements are provided in this table. Size DD Systems Managed Virtual CPU (vcpu) Memory(GB) VM Disk SizeBase Install+ Database (GB) Small 1 to 25 1 vcpu 2 40 + 50 Medium 1 to 50 2 vcpu 3 40 + 100 Large 1 to 75 2 vcpu 4 40 + 200 Note EMC does not support the changing of any of the individual components of these settings, that is, you cannot increase the memory, change the CPU settings, etc. Determining VMware Requirements VMware requirements include: VMware Hardware and Software System Requirements on page 10 Additional VMware Software Applications on page 11 VMware Hardware and Software System Requirements The VMware hardware and software required to host a DD Management Center installation can be: The vcenter Management Server installation, which accommodates a variety of virtual machines, of which one is the DD Management Center. The server is where the virtual machines are configured, provisioned, and managed. One of: ESX server running vsphere 4.1 ESXi server running vsphere 4.1 ESXi server running vsphere 5.0 ESXi server running vsphere 5.1 vsphere client, a Windows-based GUI interface that allows users to connect remotely to either of the server types above to perform remote management. Storage for the VMware installation can be provided using: NAS (Virtual Disks over NFS) SAN (Virtual Disks over VMFS) High Availability Requirements If a high availability configuration is required, use the VMware software option of your choice to implement this. 10 EMC Data Domain Management Center 1.1 Initial Configuration Guide

Planning the DD Management Center Environment Additional VMware Software Applications The following VMware software can be used on the VMware installation to help manage the virtual systems. VMware High Availability Software vsphere HA provides cost-effective high availability for any application running in a virtual machine, regardless of its operating system or underlying hardware configuration. VMware Fault Tolerant Software vsphere Fault Tolerance (FT) for virtual machines provides zero downtime, zero data loss, and continuous availability for applications, without the cost and complexity of traditional hardware or software clustering solutions. VMware Backup/Restore Software VM image-based backup: The disk images of the VM are backed up as a whole, for examples: VMware Data Recovery (VDR), Avamar, etc. Crash-consistent backup in case of restore; both file system and application recovery is needed (automatically) Additional VMware Software Applications 11
