As a child, I was fortunate to have a few teachers who truly inspired me to learn and succeed. As educators, you have many similar opportunities to touch children s lives and make meaningful impacts that can last a lifetime. Sanford Inspire is based on the belief that every child deserves not one, but many inspirational teachers. Inspire addresses this need by providing resources and tools to help educators create inspiring classroom experiences that encourage students to learn and succeed. As an entrepreneur and philanthropist, I can think of no better return on investment than inspiring students to embrace learning and find their path in life. Inspired Teaching and Learning, For Every Student, In Every Classroom... Think back to your time in grade school and high school. Can you recall a particular teacher who inspired you? One who inspired you to achieve more than you ever thought possible? One who motivated you, instilled in you the power of I can, and facilitated the achievement of your dreams? Introduction Most of us can recall one or two teachers who truly made a difference. Others, if they were fortunate, can point to a handful of teachers who played a key role in shaping their lives. At Sanford Inspire, we think that s setting the bar too low. In fact, we believe every student deserves a teacher who inspires greatness, and we re working hard to turn that dream into reality. Goals and Objectives Sanford Inspire strives to make the world a better place by creating and disseminating strategies and resources developed through research and sharing of evidence-based practices to put inspired teachers in every classroom. Employing a multi-tiered approach focused on connecting research, development, and practice through a consortium of higher education and PK-12 school districts, Sanford Inspire seeks to: Engage all members of the educational community in meaningful discussions and activities to ensure all stakeholders effectively work together to guarantee all students can achieve academically and thrive personally Share innovative programmatic approaches to preparing and strengthening inspired educators within higher-education institutions and PK-12 schools Provide targeted, customized professional development to support the growth of inspired educators needed to ensure PK-12 students have access to the highest-quality education Provide resources to assist teachers and educators integrate inspiring practices into the classroom, in schools, and in school districts Facilitate collaboration and dissemination of research-based practices to expand the inspired education movement ENGAGE SHARE SUPPORT INSPIRE EXPAND Every child deserves an inspired teacher in every classroom. The Sanford Inspire Difference The positive and meaningful relationships between students, teachers and parents are at the heart of the educational experience. Sanford Inspire represents a bold step forward in the current educational environment to reaffirm the place of relationship building in excellent teaching and learning. Introduction The Sanford Inspire philosophy and approach links academic achievement equally to an effective integration of socio-emotional and cognitive strategies; thereby inspiring students academic pursuits and ensuring they thrive personally. We believe every child should be continually surrounded, supported, and sustained by an educational community dedicated to inspired teaching and learning. Sanford Inspire serves as a powerful catalyst for change by providing leadership in the inspired teaching and learning movement and working collaboratively with educators to nurture, develop, and sustain inspired educational experiences for all. Inspired Teachers: The Core Focus of our Work Sanford Inspire envisions an education system where inspired teaching represents the norm for all learning environments, and where teachers and schools consider inspired learning a core purpose rather than an incidental outcome. Inspired teachers are influenced by and work within several larger systems that ideally support and sustain them. In all our work with education stakeholders, our core focus remains on the development and support of Inspired teachers through: Highly effective educator preparation programs Meaningful professional learning activities Resources designed to develop educators with outstanding instructional and relationship building skills and abilities By coordinating and utilizing the available knowledge and resources at each level, Sanford Inspire seeks to provide caring, student-centered learning environments where all learners achieve their dreams. A Framework for Meaningful Change Sanford Inspire is dedicated to enriching classroom practices, enhancing student learning, and providing strategies to develop more meaningful teacher-student relationships. History and Development Founded in 2008, Sanford Inspire began with a commitment between T. Denny Sanford and educators at the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University (ASU). Their objective was to create new resources and tools for recruiting and preparing teacher candidates to become inspired classroom teachers. How it Works This resulted in the production of numerous modules enabling university faculty and teacher candidates to target specific skill development to maximize a teacher candidate s success once in the classroom. During this time, the development team also built a website, www.sanfordinspireprogram.org, showcasing the open access resources available to educators working in higher and public education. In producing these teacher materials, the work completed at ASU by Sanford Inspire leadership resulted in a focused set of professional development resources for pre-service and experienced teachers working in PK-12 classrooms. These professional development materials are designed to attract, develop, and support inspirational teachers through systematic approaches devoted to foundational skills needed to maximize all students potentials. School and district administrators use the resources to provide differentiated support for their teachers. The online modules and other materials have become an integral part of Sanford Inspire. Sanford Inspire professional development materials are designed to attract, develop, and support inspirational teachers. 12

National University s Role in Sanford Inspire Based on his belief and desire to bring meaningful change to local and global communities, T. The Sanford Inspire Collaborative No single institution can effectively disseminate a movement the size and scope of Sanford Inspire. As a result, the Sanford Inspire Collaborative was created to involve other institutions in the development, evolution and dissemination of the movement, with potential international partners. The Sanford Inspire Collaborative represents a diverse group of higher education institutions and their PK-12 partners with some entities focused on research and others on educating future teachers. How it Works These partnerships have joined together in a dynamic dialogue about what it means to be an inspired teacher and to position inspired teaching and learning at the center of their work. Dedicated to guiding and shaping Sanford Inspire s future agenda of focused research, development, and implementation, the Collaborative aims to: Pursue the exploration, integration, and implementation of Sanford Inspire principles of inspired teaching and learning Engage interested colleges of education across the country to investigate and adopt Sanford Inspire principles of inspired teaching and learning within their educator preparation programs Identify effective strategies to partner with PK-12 school districts to implement Sanford Inspire for professional development Share research and program development efforts focused on Sanford Inspire beliefs Determine a collaborative research agenda related to Sanford Inspire Track, measure and disseminate research and best practices to all universities and school districts engaged in the movement The Sanford Inspire Collaborative: Sharing ideas, research, and best practices for inspired teaching and learning... 14

Leaders in Teacher Education The Sanford Higher Education Collaborative includes institutions involved in educational research and/or teacher education: Sanford Higher Education Founding Collaborative Members National University Lead Partner Touro College and University System City University of Seattle University of Central Florida Long Island University University of Maine Nova Southeastern University New York University South Dakota State University University of South Dakota These Collaborative members were chosen for their diversity, commitment, and their reputation for quality teacher preparation. As Sanford Inspire expands throughout the U.S., the Collaborative will invite higher education institutions dedicated to continuous improvement of their educator programs and who passionately embrace the Sanford Inspire philosophy of having inspired teachers and educators in every classroom to join. These institutions should demonstrate: Commitment from all senior university officials and program faculty Desire to engage in rigorous examination and dialogue around their educator preparation practices Willingness to share research and best practices with the Collaborative Capacity to implement desired curriculum changes in a timely manner SANFORD INSPIRE

How the Collaborative Works As a collection of diverse universities and partner school districts, the Sanford Inspire Collaborative shares ideas, research, and best practices regarding how each institution develops inspired teachers. Members meet regularly, in person or by phone, to discuss how each institution is: How it Works Focusing and implementing the characteristics of Sanford Inspired teachers and educators Collecting, analyzing and utilizing research data for their own teacher preparation work Revitalizing programs and curriculum to align with the philosophy of inspired teaching and learning Sanford Inspire encourages subgroups within the Collaborative to meet more often to facilitate collaboration and develop state-of-the-art communication tools to drive continuous conversation around Inspired teaching and learning. In doing so, these subgroups will enhance the process of building an integrated research and development agenda focused on identifying and implementing the characteristics of inspired teachers, administrators, psychologists, and counselors as well as inspired schools. Participating universities and their PK-12 partners will collaborate to envision, implement, investigate, and apply evidence-based practices in schools of education and PK-12 school communities. This research will guide the nationwide implementation of Sanford Inspire initiatives to ensure every student has the opportunity to continually learn from inspired teachers working in inspired school environments. 16

What You Can Expect from Sanford Inspire Sanford Inspire will provide high quality learning experiences, resources, support, facilitation, and passionate commitment to our shared focus on inspired teaching and learning. Our commitment to members of the Collaborative is to inspire and support you to become your best. We will collaborate, coordinate, facilitate, create, imagine, and provide guidance and leadership. The impact individual members of the Sanford Inspire Collaborative experience depends upon the investment made to realize their vision. As a Collaborative, the degree to which members move the work forward with imagination, energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and inspiration will determine success. In other words, the degree to which we inspire one another will determine the difference we will make. Keys to Success for Collaborative Members The Sanford Inspire curriculum enhancement process requires the following from its members: Complete Institutional buy in. The Collaborative expects each member to secure approval and support from all leadership levels and stakeholder groups for participation in our commitment to inspired teaching and learning. How it Works A system for assessment and self-study. Members should have an established culture supportive of continuous improvement based on performance and program assessment measures leading to meaningful revisions. Enthusiastic faculty involvement. Faculty commitment provides the foundation for successful participation in Sanford Inspire. Their own inspired teaching and learning will model the expectations of students. Ability to produce results. The Collaborative expects its members to align program revisions to improved candidate performance as measured in PK-12 classrooms. A willingness to collaborate and share. Collaboration is a driving force behind the Sanford Inspire movement. We will achieve success by sharing ideas, best practices, and research and working together as partners as well as critical colleagues. 18

Reshaping Teacher Education Deeply committed to investigating and implementing what makes inspirational teachers, Sanford Inspire serves as a catalyst for change in the preparation and support of highquality educators. Most educators realize the importance of inspired teaching and learning. Yet, more teacher education programs must intentionally focus on developing passionate teachers who specifically and systematically incorporate socio-emotional relationship building skills equally with highly effective pedagogical strategies. To prepare Sanford Inspire teachers and educators, higher education institutions need to build these fundamental concepts into their educator preparation programs. This includes systematically assessing program effectiveness by gathering and analyzing candidate and program performance data as measured during their clinical practice experiences and in their graduates future PK-12 classrooms. University-based educator preparation programs, along with their school district partners who share this philosophy and seek to develop new curricular and instructional approaches to inspired teaching and learning, are invited to participate in Sanford Inspire. Getting Started Joining Sanford Inspire begins with having a rich dialogue with and a genuine commitment from all stakeholders. This conversation revolves around how you define and envision inspired teaching and learning and what is needed to position it as a core feature of your program. It requires asking questions like: What examples of inspired teaching and learning exist in our program? What aspects of our current teacher education program reflect inspired teaching and learning? How should we position it in our educator preparation programs? What outcomes do we hope to achieve with Sanford Inspire? How will we recognize and reward those outcomes? What will inspired teaching and learning look like at your institution? Teacher Education Integration Where do we begin and what steps do we take to realize these changes? What makes the Sanford Inspire Collaborative so powerful and exciting is the opportunity for each university to answer these questions in their own way. The Sanford Inspire core beliefs guide the work, but the collaborative process provides the flexibility and synergism allowing it to succeed at different institutions. Ultimately, every university will develop a framework based on the Sanford Inspire principles. Participation in Sanford Inspire also involves your PK-12 school partners and other organizations. Therefore, it s critical to have a conversation surrounding the question, why inspired teaching and learning? with principals, superintendents, parent groups, counselors, and other invested stakeholders. In a movement of this size and scope, everyone needs to have a voice and be heard. 22

Next Steps After stakeholders reach consensus about the definition and vision of inspired teaching and learning using the Sanford Inspire core beliefs the remaining steps to implementation include: Self-evaluation. Analyze and assess your current teacher education programs, curriculum, and performance indicators as they relate to Sanford Inspire. Identification of curriculum changes. Identify the gaps between your current program structures and curriculum and what it will take to develop beginning educators capable of demonstrating inspired teaching and learning. Program development. Design and implement new and redesigned courses, programs, and teaching methods to align with Sanford Inspire guiding principles, keeping in mind the needs of your own institution and faculty. Measurement of process and results. Continuously assess candidate and program performance through signature assignments, clinical practice ratings and other key measures. Share research and best practices with other Collaborative members. Ongoing improvement. Integrate research and best practices from your own assessment as well as from other Collaborative members as part of your ongoing improvement process. SANFORD INSPIRE

Case Study: The National University Sanford Inspire Experience In addition to providing resources and support to the universities and school districts collaborating to implement the framework, National University is equally involved in integrating Sanford Inspire into our own Sanford College of Education. We offer our experience as a starting point for universities to begin their implementation processes. Start with the End in Mind Every good framework or movement is driven by a vision. When first evaluating Sanford Inspire, we wondered how it could help us graduate teachers who would truly make a difference in every classroom. Every good movement is driven by a vision. What does inspired teaching and learning mean to you? Teacher Education Integration This required engaging in rigorous dialogue around questions like: What is inspired teaching and learning? What does it mean to be an inspired teacher? How do these inspired qualities influence our candidates performances and PK-12 learners achievements? How should we align our curriculum with the Sanford Inspire candidate qualities? How do we measure our programs effectiveness as the candidates progress through those programs and work in their own classrooms? Facilitated by the Dean of the Sanford College of Education, the Director of Sanford Inspire, and National University s Sanford College of Education faculty, this initiative received enthusiastic support from the National University System Chancellor and key administrators. 24

The National University Implementation Process Involving stakeholders We engaged our PK-12 stakeholders in discussions about the Sanford Inspire concepts, core beliefs, and initiatives, and received guidance regarding our program improvement plans. The feedback we received encouraged us throughout the change process. Defining inspired teaching and learning. Through a series of formal and informal conversations during various faculty meetings, National University s teacher education faculty explored the qualities of inspired teaching and learning. As a result of these monthly conversations, the faculty determined they needed to further explore exemplary programs and teachers who reflected inspired teaching and learning. Based on this decision, the faculty formed five faculty-led work groups who gathered evidence based on focused questions. Identifying candidate skills The faculty determined their candidates would be known as Sanford Inspire teachers would need to demonstrate a combination of student-centered and inquiry-based pedagogy, with a focus on building meaningful relationships with students through research-based socio-emotional skills. Conducting a gap analysis For the department s initial and advanced programs, the faculty identified curricular and instructional gaps between the current program and the identified candidate attributes, program themes, and key professional standards. Designing the new curriculum Next, the faculty formed a 12-member team charged with using a myriad evidence-based resources, including work-group findings, professional standards, and other conceptual frameworks. Their goal was to create a proposal for linked revisions of the initial credential and advanced teacher educations programs based upon: 1) finalized key candidate attributes and 2) identified major programmatic conceptual themes culled from the evidence. Implementing curriculum changes Based on the gap analysis results, National University revised the Program Learning Outcomes, Course Learning Outcomes, instructional strategies, assignments, field experiences, and clinical practice placements to ensure alignment to the new Sanford Inspire candidate attributes and program themes. Facilitating feedback groups While progressing through the curricular revision process, we will have a series of focus groups targeting feedback from the PK-12 educational community members. Long before our program revisions move decidedly forward, the guidance from our educational colleagues will be able to influence our directions. Customized Development for Teachers Increasingly, Sanford Inspire Collaborative partners are reaching out to local school districts to introduce them to the opportunities available through university-to-school district collaboration. By working with Collaborative members, school districts gain access to research and resources to help improve teacher development based upon the tenets of Sanford Inspire. Collaborating with Sanford Inspire can help your school district achieve three important outcomes: Customize your professional teacher development around issues of inspiring PK-12 students. Use an action research approach to systematically study the implementation of your Sanford Inspire goals. Work collaboratively with select university schools of teacher education on issues of professional development based on the Sanford Inspire model. Having inspired teachers in your classrooms also helps with these critical goals: Build stronger teacher student relationships so students feel more connected to their schools and communities. Because Sanford Inspire provides a framework and an approach rather than a structured program, it allows significant leeway in how schools and school districts can apply the Sanford Inspire resources and materials to enhance professional development. With Sanford Inspire, you can select the materials and resources to best address your teacher development issues. Moreover, Sanford Inspire provides a process of research and outcome-based assessment designs, enabling you to systematically study your own practices and participate in continuous improvement based on learner outcomes. Teacher Development Materials Since the initial Sanford Inspire research began in 2008, ASU s educators have developed more than 70 opendomain resources to assist with teacher development. These include composed lesson plans segmented in five broad teaching areas, on-demand learning modules, online videos showing implemented strategies in PK-12 classrooms, and other types of instructional materials. Universities and school districts embracing Sanford Inspire may use as few or as many of the materials as they choose. Sanford Inspire also allows for the development of customized materials based on the tenets of the movement. Reviewing the materials to determine which ones fit your curriculum will help to achieve your desired outcomes with Sanford Inspire. Through the process of sharing their research results and best practices, the Sanford Inspire Collaborative will continually develop new learning materials. On Demand Learning Modules Developed through the ASU/Sanford Inspire partnership, the on-demand learning modules provide important skill development opportunities for pre-service and in-service teachers. Easy to complete The on-demand modules usually take less than one hour to complete. No cost All learning modules are provided free of charge to teachers and school districts.
