Minimize

Why minimize waste? Reduce costs Increase process efficiency and productivity Reduce present and future regulatory burdens Improve workplace safety Improve environmental quality Maintain or improve institutional image

How can you minimize waste? Plan ahead Order only the amount needed Avoid storing excess chemicals Share unneeded chemicals Keep chemicals properly labeled

Instructional Laboratory Reagents to be used in the experiments are to be prepared by the instructors. Chemical wastes generated during experiments are to placed in designated containers located in the instructional laboratories. Enter amount/concentration of waste in the waste logbook provided by the instructor. Call the attention of your instructor if there are any unused chemicals left after experiment 17

Contain 18

Waste Containers Material must be compatible with waste Examples: Acids and bases: do NOT store in metal Hydrofluoric acid: do NOT store in glass Gasoline/solvents: do NOT store in lightweight polyethylene containers Do NOT completely fill container; allow some space above (~10%) Secondary containment 19

Waste Storage Do NOT place waste containers on: Floor Fume hood Sink Always ensure that containers are capped properly at all times Place incompatible chemical wastes as far apart from each other as possible 20
