Interior Design at Bellevue College A Guide for Current and Prospective Students

Interior Design at Bellevue College Overview Mission Degree Options The Bellevue College Interior Design Program is an established, well-respected program in the Seattle area. Since its inception in 1982, our program has grown from a two-year associate degree program to a CIDAaccredited four-year baccalaureate degree with approximately 400 full-time students. Located in one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, the program provides students with substantial opportunities to connect with the local design community. Along with a core of qualified full-time faculty, the program engages members of the local practitioner community as adjunct faculty and guest critics. The majority of our students are from the Seattle-Bellevue region, but a growing international student population adds to an already rich diversity of cultural, social, and educational perspectives. The Interior Design Department at Bellevue College empowers our students to realize their potential and goals through a design education that is responsible, rigorous, and relevant. The Associate of Arts in Interior Studies is a two-year degree open to anyone interested in a career in interior design. Graduates have found employment in sales, customer service, residential design, or professional support. The degree also forms the foundation for entry into the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Interior Design program. The Bachelor of Applied Arts in Interior Design (BAA) offers a broadly-based and professionally-relevant curriculum that embraces the responsibility of preparing and inspiring the designers of the future. The BAA program provides a learning environment based on a foundation of holistic, creative problem-solving, and is accredited as a professional level degree by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). The BAA curriculum is an upper-division course of study for students who have completed an Associate of Arts degree or higher (or equivalent), in one of the following degree categories: Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture or Industrial Design. The degree offers a combination of core courses, general education and electives that help students achieve their particular career goals. Faculty Academic Advising Information Sessions The Interior Design faculty possess multifaceted and forward-thinking expertise in architecture, design history, residential and commercial interiors, lighting, space plan ning, presentation and computeraided design. Full-time faculty are actively engaged in teaching at all levels of the curriculum, as well as participating in profes sional work, publication and research. Part-time faculty are practicing professional architects and designers and offer students firsthand exposure to current work and com munity networking. Students pursuing their degree in Interior Design are assigned a full-time faculty advisor. Faculty advisors help counsel students on career and degree planning, transfer course evaluations, and graduation require ments. To learn more about our AA and BAA programs, please make arrangements to attend a program information session. The schedule can be viewed at www.bellevuecollege.edu/interiordesign/edu/curriculumpath/#program-information-sessions/. 03

Facilities Professional Connections Internships Employment Listserve The Interior Design Program is located in the L Building of the Bellevue College campus and the majority of our courses are held here too. We have two computer laboratories with Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhinoceros, Adobe Creative Cloud, and other crucial programs. Furthermore, our design studio classrooms serve as a venue for student critiques and presentations. A resource library with current materials and periodicals supports educational and design specification needs. Student members of professional organizations such as ASID, IIDA and NWSID serve in leadership positions, promote community service, and build important networking contacts. The Bellevue College Interior Design Student Association (IDSA) links students to professionals in the industry through their sponsored Speaker Series and other events throughout the year. Prominent industry professionals contribute to the classroom learning environment as guest critics and speakers, and a distinguished Professional Advisory Board provides our program with curriculum guidance and feedback on industry trends. The Bachelors of Applied Arts curriculum features a strong practical learning component that includes a required professional internship of 150 hours. This experience immerses our students in meaningful work and provides vital real-world profes sional experience within architecture firms, interior design firms, retail businesses, government agen cies and other organizations. Internships can help build important professional connections and transfer to full-time employ ment for graduates. Alumni of the Interior Design Program obtain positions in major Interior Design and Architectural firms specializing in hospitality, healthcare, retail, office, residential and many other fields of design. Subscribe to the Interior Design List serve, an email service providing important program related information, job postings and internships. Sign up instructions can be found on the Interior Design website at: www.bellevuecollege.edu/interiordesign/edu/programs/#list-serve/. 04

Degree Options and Eligibility Requirements The Department of Interior Design offers the following two degree paths to assist students with their educational goals. Associate of Arts in Interior Studies Degree This two-year, 95 credit AA degree offers a professionally relevant curriculum that helps students build skills for Interior Design paraprofessional positions, and prepare for admission to the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Interior Design program at Bellevue College. The program includes core courses in Art and Interior Design that teach foundation skills in both manual and computer-aided graphics along with exposure to design studio processes and methodologies. Other required courses help the student to strengthen visual, oral, and written communication skills. The Associate in Arts in Interior Studies degree program has an open door non-competitive admission policy. Apply to Bellevue College and register for the appropriate classes. Review the online class schedules and course descriptions to identify any class prerequisites, or special requirements for class enrollments. Course descriptions and program details can be viewed on these websites: www.bellevuecollege.edu/interiordesign/edu/curriculum-path/#aa-worksheet www.bellevuecollege.edu/classes/all/indes Bachelor of Applied Arts Interior Design Degree This CIDA-accredited BAA degree provides a learning environment based on a strong foundation of creative problem-solving. The curriculum helps students gain insight into historical and current strategies in order to achieve technological, sustainable and socially relevant solutions for interior environments. Multi-disciplinary studios help students focus their interests while learning from experts in the professional field. This creates opportunities for highly collaborative student-faculty-industry relationships throughout the program. To qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Interior Design program students must fulfill the application requirements below. Program details can be viewed on the Interior Design Program website at www.bellevuecollege.edu/interiordesign/edu/curriculum-path/#baa-worksheet/. Application requirements include: Online BAA Application, submission of digital portfolio, copies of unofficial transcripts and the payment of required application fee. 5. Transfer Credit Evaluation (continued) If you have college level Interior Design, Art, or other design-related credits or degrees, arrange a meeting with your Interior Design faculty advisor as soon as possible by contacting the Interior Design Program Manager. Bring a copy of your college transcript(s) and course descriptions to the advising session, where you will receive a customized curriculum plan. During your first quarter of classes, all transfer students are strongly encouraged to request an official transfer credit evaluation review. Visit the Student Services desk or Interior Design Program Manager and request the Professional/Technical Program Official Transfer Credit Evaluation Request Form. Fill this out and return it to the Student Services desk with an official sealed copy of your transcript(s), or mail these to the BC Evaluations Office. The evaluation process may take 16-18 weeks. At which time, you will be notified at your BC email account of the credits accepted in transfer and these will appear in your Degree Audit transcript. Non-Traditional Credits: Credits from non-regionally accredited institutions follow the college s policies and procedures for awarding non-traditional credit. BC awards non-traditional credit for prior learning, for work completed in study at non-accredited institutions, or for training certificates.
