Best Places to Insulate When insulating a home you want to create a barrier around the envelope - or 'shell' of the house. This includes exterior walls and either the attic or ceilings or roof. Basement walls and crawl spaces are also areas where heat can be lost or gained. You are creating a thermal envelope which reduces heat transfer and lowers heating and cooling costs. The illustration shows some of the major areas in a home where heat loss happens. Heat always transfers to cold, so in the winter the heat inside is trying to get out, and in the summer, the heat outside is trying to get in. No matter which direction the heat transfer is going - Nansulate helps to greatly reduce it. Combat Thermal Bridging Nansulate combats thermal bridging because the coatings can be applied to surface areas where heat loss/gain is an issue due to conduction through materials like building studs. Thermal bridging occurs in building envelopes when relatively high thermal conductivity materials such as steel and concrete create pathways for heat loss. Thermal bridging happens through the wall studs where traditional insulation cannot be used. Nansulate thermal insulation coating over the entire wall surface greatly reduces heat flow through those thermal bridging areas. Project Examples - Dallas, TX uncoated temperature. Nansulate Translucent GP was used to coat the ceiling of the attic. The house was 4000 square feet with extremely high pitch roof line. The area of the attic was a little over 3000 s.f. The owner of the house put thermometers in the attic monitoring the heat throughout the day. During the late afternoons with the outside temperature at 104 F, the inside of the attic was 143 F. The initial application covered 1/3 of the attic with 3 coats and 2/3 of the attic with 2 coats. The crew returned two weeks later to apply the 3rd coat the rest of the attic. They noted that the temperature outside was 103 F, (it was 3 hours earlier than the first application and at the peak of the heat for the attic). The temperature of the attic was 101 F, a 42 degree drop from the Download full case study: www.nansulate.com/pdf/casestudies/casestudy_house_attic.pdf Industrial Nanotech, Inc. - Painting Contractor Program Package - 800-767-3998 - p. 15 of 20
Frequently Asked Questions Below are some often asked questions that you can refer to when you need a quick answer. What do the coatings look like? Are they clear? Can they be tinted? A. Nansulate HomeProtect Clear Coat, Nansulate Crystal, Nansulate Energy Protect, Nansulate LDX, and Nansulate Translucent High Heat are all translucent and will be fairly invisible over most surfaces, except for glass. The coatings have a matte finish, and will sometimes give surfaces a slight sheen. Because they are clear, they cannot be tinted. What is my customer s product cost per S.F.? A. For HomeProtect Clear Coat (.53 cents per S.F. @ the recommended 12 mils wet film thickness - 3 coats) For Nansulate Energy Protect (.57 cents per S.F. @ the recommended 12 mils wet film thickness - 3 coats) For Nansulate Crystal (.40 cents per S.F. @ the recommended 8 mils wet film thickness - 2 coats) For Nansulate LDX (.40 cents per S.F. @ the recommended 8 mils wet film thickness - 2 coats) For Nansulate Translucent High Heat ($2.11 per S.F. @ the typical 40 mils wet film thickness - 10 coats) Are there any toxic fumes or smell? A. No, the coatings do not contain any toxic ingredients and are considered environmentally friendly. They will have a slight wet paint smell when applied, which will go away as they dry. They are low VOC (100 g/l), non-toxic, and non-flammable. How do I know I have the correct thickness? A. We suggest measuring each coat as it is applied with a Wet Film Thickness Gauge to ensure you have the correct coverage for your application. For surfaces over 212F (100C) a Dry Film Thickness Gauge should be used. Be sure to refer to the Nansulate Application Handbook and the Nansulate Crystal Application Handbook prior to application of the coatings for full application details. How easy is it to apply? A. The coatings are applied like a paint. You can use standard paint application equipment, airless paint sprayer (at low pressure) or H.V.L.P. sprayer, or a brush or roller. You will want to apply each coat at approximately 4 mils in wet film thickness. It is important not to apply the coats too thick, or you will see cracking and loss of adhesion as it s drying. As a visual aid: When applying the coats should stay fairly clear as you apply them. If the coats appear milky, that is an indicator that you are applying too thick. The coatings are water-based and cleanup is easy with soap and water. What type of energy savings will my customers see? A. The benefit of each application is dependent upon the factors of that environment. However customers typically report seeing energy savings between 20%-40% after using Nansulate to insulate their homes. Of course, those that insulate both their walls and either the ceiling, attic or roof will see the largest benefit since they are coating the complete thermal envelope. Industrial Nanotech, Inc. - 800-767-3998 - www.nansulate.com p. 16 of 20
Do the coatings have an R-Value? A. No. The R-value measurement cannot be used to accurately reflect thin film insulation. The formula for the R- value generally uses an inch in its calculation, which means that attempting to use it for any material less than an inch will give an inaccurate result. Nansulate is a new technology which insulates by means of low thermal conduction. By using a material with a very low thermal conduction, it is able to reduce heat transfer, which in turn reduces energy used to heat or cool. There are other test standards put in place to accurately reflect thermal abilities of thin film insulation materials. One of these is the UNI EN ISO 8990:1990, the Standard Test Method for Steady-State Thermal Performance of Building Assemblies. The test measures many variables including thermal flow in watts through sections of wall material. Nansulate coatings have been tested to this standard by an independent laboratory and were found to reduce thermal flow, measured in watts, through an 8cm cement wall section with plaster on both sides by 34.8%. You can find further information on our Thermal Test Data Page, and its real world performance can be seen by reading our case studies for Industrial, Residential, Green Building and Specialty applications. Test Data Thermal Testing Data Results from Standard Test Method for Steady-State Thermal Performance of Building Assemblies - UNI EN ISO 8990:1999: Thermal flow, measured in watts, through the wall section coated with Nansulate was reduced by 34.80% Thermal resistance (1/U), measured in m2*k*w1, Description: Two wall samples are tested according to test standards for a variety of thermal measurements including thermal flow, thermal conductance and thermal resistance. Testing was done by the accredited laboratory Istituto di Richerche E Collaudi - a certifying body for the Italian Government. Mold Testing Data Results from ASTM D 5590 & ASTM G21 Zero to minimal mold growth Photo shows the uncoated wooden control. Uncoated control is covered with mold growth. Photo shows a Nansulate coated wooden sample. The sample coated with Nansulate shows zero mold growth. EMSL Analytical, Inc., one of the nation's leading testing laboratories, compared mold growth on wooden surfaces coated with Nansulate products to surfaces with no coating. All were exposed to spore-producing bacteria, including Pencillium funiculosum, Aspergillus niger, Aureobasidium pullulans, Chaetomium globosum, and Trichoderma virens. After four weeks, the Nansulate coatings exhibited zero or minimal mold growths, whereas the uncoated surfaces showed extreme to 100 percent mold coverage. The testing was conducted by EMSL Analytical, Inc., an AIHA accredited laboratory. Nansulate Coatings have undergone toxicology testing and have been found safe for use in homes, schools, food processing and other sensitive environments. Some nanotechnology products have come under scrutiny due to potential health issues posed by the use of nano-sized materials particles smaller than one billionth of a meter. However, that is where Industrial Nanotech s particle design approach differs. Instead of nano-sized particles, Nansulate is made with larger micro-sized materials which use nanoscale internal architecture and surface chemistry to allow Nansulate to have properties that are unique. Nansulate products have received NSF International registration for use in food related environments (safe for incidental contact with food) and certification as a safe product from Industrial Health and Safety Consultants, Inc. My girlfriend and I both live in a very old house in downtown Detroit, circa 1890 s, and the cost to heat our home is outrageous...we applied the Nansulate product in our upstairs unit...the product was easy to apply, and the results were almost instantaneous. The upstairs unit retained a more constant temperature and was consistently more comfortable without the need to pump more and more heat and money up there. I would highly recommend the Nansulate product line to anyone who is trying to make their home more comfortable and save money on their heating bills. "We are really pleased with the 40% savings in energy cost and the swiftness at which it (the house) cools off and heats up. I even coated the claw foot tub in it so the water stays hotter longer!...i tell my friends about it because it really works. You could heat that house with a votive candle and a blow dryer now that it has the nanotech coating on it."
