Introduction to ENGINE Oils API service classifications The American Petroleum Institute (API) Classification system provides information about the engine oil. > The letter S followed by another letter (for example SN ) indicates that the oil is appropriate for petrol engines. SN oils are superior to SM oils in many performance criteria. It offers enhanced oxidation control, deposit control and resistance to oil burn-off. > The letter C followed by another letter and/or number (for example CI-4) indicates that the oil is appropriate for diesel engines. The second letter in both the S and the C categories is assigned alphabetically. Generally the further along we move in the alphabet indicates the latest technology and quality enhancements in engine oil. The most current API performance categories for passenger car engine oil are: > API SN: The API and the American Automobiles Manufacturers Association introduced SN in 2010. SN oils supersede all previous S categories. > API CF: The CF category is, strictly speaking, a diesel category and denotes service typical of offroad indirect injection diesel engines. It supersedes the CD category and can be used wherever CD or CC oils are recommended. Its use in passenger car motor oil usually signifies the suitability of the oil for use in certain passenger car diesel engines and is also indicative of superior high temperature deposit protection in petrol engines. ACEA stands for the Association des Constructeurs Europeens d Automobiles This represents a large group of European engine manufacturers. ACEA has established four performance categories: The A category for petrol engines; the B category for passenger car diesel engines; the C category represents catalyst compatible oils; the E category for heavy duty diesel engines. ACEA A/B Sequences These define the requirements for engine oils for service fill usage in passenger car gasoline and light-duty diesel engines. ACEA C Sequences These define the requirements for catalyst compatible engine oils for service fill usage in passenger car gasoline and light-duty diesel engines with after treatment systems. ACEA E Sequences These define the requirements for engine oils for service fill usage in heavy duty diesel engines. ILSAC ratings ILSAC stands for the International Lubricant Standardisation Advisory Committee. For lubricants to meet the GF specification, they must prove to be energy conserving. How often should I change my engine oil? Car manufactures often give two recommendations for oil changes in their owner s manuals: > Standard Service Conditions are generally where a vehicle drives more than 15,000km per year on bitumen, with little stop start driving and few periods of long idling. These service conditions can be met with high performance mineral based oil from one of the products in Valvoline s XLD range. > Severe Service Conditions include more arduous environments such as driving in city traffic, lots of short trips, off road driving or towing. These service conditions can be met with a semi-synthetic or full synthetic engine oil such as Valvoline s Engine Armour, MaxLife or SynPower. Many vehicles in Australia drive in severe service conditions. Valvoline strongly recommends that the oil should be changed as per manufactures driving/drain intervals (whichever comes first). Selecting the right lubricant There are a number of ways to determine what engine oil is suited for your vehicle. The best way to find the correct lubricant grade and recommendation is to refer to your vehicle owner s manual. The manual should help you locate: > Viscosity / SAE rating (e.g. SAE 20W-50) also advise how many litres you will require to perform the oil change. Making the right choice The next step is to decide what type of engine oil is most appropriate for your vehicle and driving conditions and vehicle manufacturer requirements.. > Good engine oils are conventional mineral based engine oils suitable for the everyday driver. Standard service conditions specified in the owner s manual can be met with this range of products. > Better engine oils are synthetic blends. They provide more protection than conventional or good grades. These oils are suitable for severe service conditions where a vehicle may endure stop-go driving or short trips, long idling periods, towing of heavy loads (such as boats, trailers or driving a utility) or may require long drain capabilities. > Best engine oils are full synthetic grades that offer superior protection. Severe and high performance applications can be met with this range. If you want the ultimate protection for your engine, Valvoline recommends the use of fully synthetic lubricants. > API or ACEA rating (e.g. API SN, CF or ACEA A3/B4) If you are unable to access your vehicle owner s manual, you can either consult the Valvoline lubricant recommendation guide or search online at www.valvoline.com.au. Valvoline Filter Tech Talk: Over Pressurised Lube Oil Filters From time to time every manufacturer has had a filter that has been severely over-pressurised returned from a customer. Often the deformed filter is the only sign the car owner has that a problem existed in his lube oil system. It s possible that the damaged filter was not noticed until it was removed during the next scheduled oil change. However, if the pressure was sufficient to blow out the gasket or unroll the lockseam, the car owner may have experienced immediate and costly problems. With the evidence in his hands, he tends to put the blame on the damaged filter. It s not surprising that he is more than a little aggravated when the filter manufacturer denies any responsibility for the damage. What, then, has caused the over pressurisation? A look at how a lube oil system functions will show that oil pressure is created by the oil pump. The upper limit of this pressure is controlled by a pressure-regulating valve, which is usually an integral part of the pump. Figure 1 is a simplified diagram of the lube oil system showing the pump, regulating valve, filter and bearings. The pump supplies sufficient flow to lubricate the bearings and other moving parts of the engine. This oil must be under pressure if it is to properly separate the highly loaded parts of an engine and prevent excessive wear. The purpose of the regulating valve is to provide this pressure which on most passenger cars is between 40 and 60 PSI. The regulating valve is made up of a ball or plunger, which regulates pressure with the aid of a spring. The spring is calibrated so that the plunger will lift off its seat when the oil pressure reaches the desired amount. Once the valve is open, the pressure remains fairly constant with only small changes occurring as the engine speed varies. The filter and all other components in the lube system are subjected to the pressure established by the regulating valve. If this pressure is excessive, filter damage may occur. This is the point that many people who are not familiar with lube systems fail to realise. What can cause the pressure in the system to exceed the regulating valve setting? The answer is that either the valve must be stuck in the closed position or it is sluggish and slow to move to the open position after the engine has started. Over-pressurised Lube Oil Filters Page with diagram Figure 2 shows the system operating with the regulating valve stuck in the shut position. Under these conditions the pressure builds up equally on all components in the system until something happens to relieve the pressure. If the regulating valve becomes unstuck, the pressure will return to normal. If it remains stuck, something has to break. Normal operating pressure causes no permanent deformation of the filter body. When the system pressure reaches 150 PSI due to a faulty regulating valve, most filters become permanently deformed. At this pressure the gasket usually will not blow out and the lockseam will remain sound. If the regulating valve still remains stuck, the pressure will increase further and the gasket between the filter and the base can be blown out. This will probably cause the loss of all the oil in the system. If the filter has been installed on the tight side, the gasket may not blow out and the lockseam will unwind as the pressure continues to rise. If the customer is alert and shuts the engine off at the first sign of trouble (red light on or reduced oil pressure) he can limit his loss to a tow job, oil change and new filter. If he drives to the nearest garage, he will probably burn up the engine due to lack of oil. The main point is that the deformed filter is not the cause of this excessive pressure, but is the victim of a faulty regulating valve. The customer may ask if a filter that is completely plugged could have caused the overpressure conditions in the system, The answer is no. If the regulating valve is functioning properly it will maintain the pressure on the filter at 40 or 60 PSI even if filter is plugged. Tech Talk Valvoline Filter Tech Talk: Low Oil Pressure Problems Most vehicles use a visual indicator, which may be a light or gauge, mounted in the instrument panel to alert the driver of low oil pressure. Insufficient oil pressure is serious, since the oiling system must be properly pressurised to keep the moving parts of the engine lubricated to prevent excessive wear. The oil pressure indicator is connected with a pressure switch. The pressure switch contains electrical contacts that are in the closed position when the oil pressure is below 5 psi (3.5 KPa). This pressure is established by the engine manufacturer based upon individual engine characteristics and requirements. When the engine is not running and the ignition switch is turned on, the warning light comes on. If the vehicle is equipped with a gauge, there will be no indication of pressure. When the engine is started, oil pressure will compress the diaphragm in the pressure switch, opening the contacts and causing the light to go out or, in the case of a gauge; a positive pressure reading will be indicated. If the warning light remains on, or the gauge fails to register a normal pressure several seconds after start up, shut the engine down immediately. Check the oil level and bring up to normal if necessary. If the warning light remains on or the gauge fails to register normally when the oil level is correct, there are a number of possibilities as to the cause of the problem: 1. The pressure switch could be faulty. 2. The wiring between the pressure switch and warning indicator could be grounded or disconnected. 3. The pump may have lost its prime. 4. The pump intake screen could be clogged. 5. The oil pressure-regulating valve could be stuck in the open position. If the warning light does not come on with the ignition switch in the on/run position, and the engine is not running, then the bulb, pressure switch, and wiring should be checked and repaired as needed. On some engines, the filter is mounted in a position, which could allow the oil in the filter to drain back to the crankcase when the engine is stopped. Normally, it takes approximately five (5) seconds for the pump to fill the filter after the engine has been started, during which time the warning device will indicate no or low oil pressure. To prevent the engine from operating without oil pressure for this period of time after start up, the filters designed for these special mounting positions contain an anti-drainback valve. This valve is usually in the form of a rubber gasket, which allows the free flow of oil through the filter in the normal direction, but when the engine is shut down it prevents the oil in the filter from draining back to the crankcase. If the warning indicator remains on for longer periods after the filter has been on the car for some time, replacing the filter is recommended. Under some conditions the warning light may fluctuate when the engine is running. This usually happens when the vehicle is going around a corner or is on a relatively steep hill. If pressure fluctuation occurs under these conditions, it is because the oil level is low and the pump strainer is no longer submerged in the oil. The oil level should be immediately brought up to normal. In summary, the oil pressure-warning device provides vital information to the driver. Dispersant An additive that helps suspend solid contaminants in a crankcase oil in colloidal suspension; inhibits and disperses sludge; reduces the formation of varnish deposits on engine parts and neutralises combustion acids. Engine Deposit Hard or persistent accumulation of sludge, varnish and carbonaceous residues due to blow-by of unburned and partially burned fuel, or partial breakdown of the crankcase lubricant. Kinematic Viscosity measure of fluid s resistance to flow under gravity at a specific temperature (usually 40ºC or 100ºC). Lands The circumferential areas between the grooves of a piston. Paraffinic A type of petroleum fluid derived from paraffinic crude oil containing a high proporation of straight chain saturated hydrocarbons. Often susceptible to cold flow problems. Poise Measurement unit of a fluid s resistance to flow. Pour Point The lowest temperature (C) at which the fluid will flow.
