Welcome to the Aneurin Leisure Adult Community Learning Brochure for 2015/16 In this brochure you will find information about courses run by Aneurin Leisure in Blaenau Gwent for 15/16. There is something for everyone whether you want to learn new skills, improve your job prospects or just attend a class for leisure. All our courses are taught by friendly, experienced tutors who will ensure that your learning is enjoyable from start to finish. Aneurin Leisure was part of the Estyn inspection of the Gwent Adult and Community Learning Partnership in February 2015. COMPUTER COURSES IT QUALIFICATIONS Essential Skills for Work and Life British Computer Society The Essential Skills for Work and Life Qualification allows learners to develop communication, numeracy and ICT skills in a combination and at a level that most accurately suits their needs. The qualifications are designed to encourage problem solving and application of communication, number and ICT so that learners are able to use these skills with confidence vocationally, educationally, as well as in their home. It is suitable from complete beginner to those wishing to build on existing IT skills with no formal exams; building a portfolio of evidence. LEVEL 1 At Level 1 the qualification exists as an Award (6 credits) and Certificate (16 credits). The qualifications can be made up of numeracy, literacy and ICT units in any combination. The ICT award is made up of the following units: Level 1 Award Using ICT Systems (HD21CY033 1 credit) Following Safe and Healthy Working Practices when using ICT (HD21CY034 1 credit) Finding, Selecting and Exchanging Information Using ICT (HD21CY035 2 credits) Developing and Presenting Information Using ICT(HD21CY036 2 credits) ITQ BCS Levels 1 and 2 are designed specifically for those who wish to gain a benchmark qualification in computing to enable them to develop their IT skills and enhance their career prospects. LEVEL 1 ITQ BCS IT User Award (ECDL Essentials) Security for IT Users IT User Fundamentals Using Email and the Internet ITQ BCS IT User Certificate (Flexiquals) This qualification requires at least 13 and at most 16 credits Mandatory Unit: Improving Productivity Using IT (3 credits) + Select units from the following: Word Processing (3 credits) Spreadsheets (3 credits) Data Management (2 credits) Presentations (3 credits) IT Security for Users (1 credit) IT User Fundamentals (3 credits) Using Email and the Internet (5 credits) LEVEL 2 This is progression course from the ITQ BCS Level 1 in which you can gain an ITQ BCS Level 2 (ECDL Extra) certificate or the BCS Level 2 Certificate - Flexiquals. ITQ BCS IT User (ECDL Extra) Word Processing Spreadsheets Presentations Improving Productivity Using IT The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) will be achieved on successful completion of the BCS Level 1 Essentials and BCS Level 2 ECDL Extra. 4 5

Flexiquals Certificate This qualification requires at least 16 and at most 20 credits (at least 50% of the optional credits must be at Level 2 or above) Mandatory Unit: Improving Productivity Using IT (4 credits) + Select units from the following: Word Processing (4 credits) Spreadsheets (4 credits) Database (4 credits) Presentations (4 credits) IT Security for Users (1 credit) IT User Fundamentals (3 credits) Using Email and the Internet (5 credits) IAB Payroll LEVEL 1 The IAB Level 1 Award in Payroll is specifically designed to appeal to those who are keen to gain an understanding of basic payroll procedures and also those who wish to become professional payroll processors. There are no formal entry requirements for the level 1 Award in Payroll. However it is recommended that prospective candidates already have basic skills in both numeracy and literacy prior to embarking on a course of student for this qualification. To achieve this qualification, only the mandatory unit consisting of 3 credits must be achieved. Computerised payroll administration (3 credits) LEVEL 2 The IAB Level 2 Certificate in Payroll is specifically designed to appeal to those who are aspiring to become professional payroll administrators. Computer Courses Essential Skills for Work and Life / Digital Literacy As well as the options shown previously for Essential Skills for Work and Life units, you can now incorporate Digital Literacy into your learning. All courses contain Citizenship materials, which can lead to a qualification that supports an application to the UK Border Agency for indefinite leave to remain in the UK or for UK Citizenship. SKILLS CLUBS What is Skills Club Independent Living Skills 36 weeks Independent Living Skills (ILS) are a range of specialised courses, designed specifically for students with learning disabilities. These courses cost 7 per learner per year and begin week commencing 7th Sept. For further information, contact your nearest centre. Welsh Courses / Cyrsiau Cymraeg 30 Weeks / Wythnos Progression route from beginners to fluency Mynediad /Entry level The emphasis is very much on conversational Welsh. By the end of this level, you should be able to hold everyday conversations in Welsh and discuss: personal details, events in the past, needs and likes, commands, future events, time and money. Mynediad 1 the first 15 units of the Mynediad course book will be covered Mynediad 2 units 16-30 will be covered Sylfaen / Foundation Level You will expand on your speaking skills and should feel comfortable discussing everyday topics such as the family, work and hobbies after completing this level. Once again, the emphasis is on speaking the language but you also get the opportunity to do some reading and writing. Sylfaen 1 - the first 15 units of the Sylfaen course book will be covered Sylfaen 2 units 16-30 will be covered Canolradd / Intermediate Level The aim of this level is to get as much speaking practice as possible, but some listening, reading and writing work is introduced. After completing this level you should have the confidence to discuss everyday activities. Your listening and reading skills will also develop, and you should be able to write letters and complete forms confidently. Canolradd 1 the first 15 units of the Canolradd course book will be covered Canolradd 2 units 16-30 will be covered Pontio This is a bridge course between level Canolradd and level Uwch which includes thematic units. One grammatical point will be practices within the theme, but also considerable emphasis will be placed on raising confidence levels by practicing conversational skills and extending vocabulary. Uwch / Higher Level You will continue to concentrate on oral skills and be able to speak fluently in a social and professional context. Also, you will be able to understand extended oral Welsh in formal and informal contexts. These courses will also help you to write competently. This qualification aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to a range of counselling skills and an understanding of the importance of using counselling skills within published ethical frameworks, such as those from the National Counselling Society (NCS), British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). This qualification comprises one mandatory unit (Counselling: Skills Acquisition and Practice) and four optional units. This qualification enables learners to work towards becoming a reflective practitioner of counselling by considering theories of human development, self-awareness, supervision and issues of difference and diversity. It also provides knowledge and understanding of the three main core theories and theorists that underpin counselling and addresses the nature of psychological problems and how they may be approached. The specialist skills and knowledge gained in this qualification will be applicable in a range of working contexts. It will enable learners to understand the need for a firm grasp of a coherent theoretical approach to counselling or supporting others. This is particularly important prior to starting work in a supervised placement if learners progresses to Level 4. City and Guilds Photography Photo Imaging 7512 Level 2/3 The Level 2 qualifications are designed for people who want to develop their skills and knowledge. It covers areas such as imaging equipment and materials, location photography and imaging management and storage. The Level 3 qualifications are for those people who wish to progress in to employment or into education and training. Learners can choose to specialise in studio photography, portrait photography, location photography, media/design, image processing or scientific imaging.
