INST 5500 Online Course Development Course Syllabus Fall 2015 (Aug 17 Dec 12) 3 GR Semester Hours COURSE DESCRIPTION Designed to synthesize information from educational technology coursework and experiences. This course should be taken toward the end of your certificate or program. It culminates with the creation of course work in an online setting. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than: (1) one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time; or (2) at least an equivalent amount of work as required in (1) above of this definition for other activities as established by an institution, including laboratory work, internships, practica, studio work, and other academic work leading toward the award of credit hours. Instructor Information: Faculty Member : Nancy Hill E-mail: hill@ucmo.edu Telephone: (cell): 660-441-5693 (w): 660.543.4284 Office: Grinstead 212 Office Hours: Wed: 6:00pm 7:00pm CST (virtual) You can email or call when you have questions Virtual location: BlackBoard, course tools, collaboration COURSE INFORMATION Materials There are no required textbooks for this course. Recommended (Needed throughout the program for formatting papers in all courses). Note: if you have access to this from a library or another source you may not need to purchase. Many websites provide basic formatting information. http://apastyle.apa.org INST 5500-1

American Psychological Association. (2009). Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6 th ed.). Washington: American Psychological Association. ISBN 978-1-4338056-1-5 This class will also use supplemental information accessible through Blackboard. Online materials vary by semester and will be posted in Blackboard under Links, or as part of the weekly assignment folder. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK* Belief Statement The Central educator is a competent, caring, reflective practitioner committed to the premise that all can learn. *Syllabus Addendum: Please visit the College of Education Syllabus Information webpage for additional resources, policies, and the complete text of the Conceptual Framework Document. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon the completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Identify learners and analyze learner needs 2. Identify a variety of course management systems 3. Identify open source course content 4. Develop learning objectives 5. Design online learning activities 6. Align curriculum, standards, content, and learning activities with technology 7. Demonstrate skill in creating an eight (8) week online course 8. Understand and implement principles of assessing online learners. 9. Evaluate courses using accepted standards for quality online course development See the complete list of ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Standards Course Requirements All rubrics are available in the Course Information and Assignments sections of Blackboard. Online Activities and Participation (200 points) There will be online discussions and activities throughout the semester. This will include ten journal entries at ten (10) points per entry, general discussion board and group discussions, with some variation depending on the size of the class and specific activities. You are asked to complete a total of ten separate journal entries throughout the duration of the semester. Your journal entries should be reflective writings documenting the process of creating your course, what you ve learned, concerns, etc. After the submission of each week/module students should create a blog entry documenting the experience. There will be four blogs of this nature. The remaining INST 5500-2

blogs should reflect on various components of the course, as you deem appropriate. By midterm you should have at least five blog entries for full credit. All blog entries are viewable to the instructor as well as your classmates. With each discussion board activity you are expected to respond to the initial questions as well as interact with classmates in a discussion. Grading is based on the frequency and regularity of logins (2-3 times per week is standard), ability to respond to at least two peers, on time completion of all discussion board activities, and the quality and depth of online discussions. Please review the section of this syllabus titled Structure of the Course/Student Responsibilities for more information on expectations of discussion board discourse. Course Syllabus (100 points) You will create a tentative syllabus that will guide your course. Following the syllabus template provided, your syllabus should include the a) course title, b) instructor information, c) course meeting times (Blackboard asynchronous, synchronous, etc.), d) at least five objectives of the course, e) description of the course, f) ADA information, g) course calendar (8 weeks) or 3 unit module overview (for independent online courses), h) brief description of each assignment and i) grading scale. Curriculum/Technology alignment table (100 points) Over the course of your degree or certificate program, we have discussed the importance of only using technology when it is beneficial to student learning and not simply because the technology is available. To that end, you will complete an alignment table that matches each objective, learning activity, and technology you intend to use in your online course. You will also discuss why each technology was chosen. 3 Modules (100 points per module = 300 points) You will develop an online course. Courses will be created based on an eight (8) -week semester period or three different modules. Please include course content (assigned readings, presentations, podcasts, etc.), additional learning activities (discussion board questions, assignments, etc.), and assessment practices. Quality Online Course Peer Review (100 points) Using accepted guidelines for quality online teaching such as the UCM CTE Peer Review form or Quality Matters (http://www.qualitymatters.org), students will peer review one course. Using the guidelines, students will review each component of the course including introduction, course content, assessment, instructional design (e.g., text, font, color), disability accessibility, grammar, course navigation and flow, etc. Course Reflection and modifications summative assignment (100 points) Students will complete a 1000 word reflective essay as a self-evaluation of the semester. Additionally, the paper will address their online course with reflections on its creation and future plans for implementation and modifications based on instructor and peer review comments or personal reflection of the course. INST 5500-3

Grading Grades will be figured using the standard scale: 100-90% = A 89-80% = B 79-70% =C 69-60%=D 59% and below=f Instructor created rubrics will be used to evaluate subjective assignments. Feedback will be provided via Blackboard (My Grades). Assignments will be graded and posted within one week of the assignment due date. Occasionally, the instructor may need to email students for additional feedback. The student will always have the option to ask for additional feedback if desired. Lacking substantial mitigating circumstances, late work will be reduced one letter grade per day late. Each day thereafter that the assignment is not turned in it will be reduced an additional letter grade. No late work will be accepted beyond three days after an assignment is due. Blackboard may allow you to post a late assignment. However, please note that without approval from me it will not be graded. Note: If Blackboard is down and it prevents you from posting assignments, please post as soon as possible after the system is back up. Blackboard failures, while rare, are possible and you will not lose points if your assignment is late for that reason. Students will have the option to revise and resubmit their work if they are not satisfied with their assigned grade. Revised assignments must be submitted within one week of receiving the original grade. Students will then receive the average of the two scores. While points cannot be made up for late work, students who are persistent in learning should do well in this course. The instructor of this course will follow all UCM policies and procedures that have been designed to contribute to student success. Specific policies and resources are listed at http://www.ucmo.edu/ced/syllabus/policies.cfm Course Specific Policies This is not a lecture-based class where students sit back, absorb information from the teacher, and then are tested on their knowledge of what they remembered. Rather, the teacher is a guide. Using a constructivist model and following a structure suited for adult learners in graduate level courses in an online environment, students will be required to build their own knowledge in collaboration with other students and stemmed from their own experiences. It is also expected that students will be seeking out information when needed from a variety of sources (professional journal literature, books, online resources, colleagues, classmates, personal experiences whether past or present, etc.) and will ask questions of the teacher and other students when necessary. The online classroom should be a friendly environment and everyone should be free to comment, ask questions, and answer questions. Teaching method will require students to use the online classroom provided in Blackboard. The majority of interaction will take place over this medium. This course is not self-paced. As you can see from reading through this syllabus, we have regular assignments and activities each week. It is expected that students will log in a few times each week in order to stay informed and participate in class discussions. Furthermore, students are expected to check their student email regularly. Standard rules of conduct for netiquette are expected. Work for this course should be original and not used to fulfill the requirements of another course. For example, students should not use the exact, replica of the course created for Online Course Development (INST 5500) to fulfill the requirements for Online Course Production (INST 6500). This is unacceptable and deemed academically dishonest. Examination Policy There are no exams in this course. Attendance Policy Attendance in an online course is a combination of logins and participation. It is expected that students will log in to Blackboard a few times each week, complete assignments as instructed, and engage classmates by posting on discussion boards. Weekly participation is expected. When posting on discussions, please keep to comments that are substantive. While an occasional Nice job! is always appreciated, please do not fill up the boards with multiple short posts that don t move the discussion further along. Keep in mind the relationship between quality and quantity of posts. Last minute postings (for example, Thursday night just before they are due) are occasionally necessary, and conversations should be allowed to continue their natural INST 5500-7

course. However, keep in mind that these last minute postings may not add as much to a two-way conversation. Therefore, it is necessary for everyone s learning experience that you log on a few times during the week to keep the discussion flowing. Points may be taken off for habitual reoccurrence of providing only last minute postings. Assignment Policy Instructor created rubrics for assignments are included in Blackboard. Students should thoroughly read all instructions. Due dates are included in the course syllabus and in the Assignments section of Blackboard. Name all of your assignments in the following manner LastName_Project. For example, if I were turning in an exploration of content management and resources paper in Microsoft Word it would have the following name: hill_exploration. Or, if I were turning in a curriculum technology alignment table assignment, it would have the following name: hill_curriculumtable. Always use your last name, the assignment, and do not put any spaces in the naming of your files. Late Work Lacking substantial mitigating circumstances, late work will be reduced one letter grade per day late. Each day thereafter that the assignment is not turned in it will be reduced an additional letter grade. No late work will be accepted beyond three days after an assignment is due. Blackboard may allow you to post a late assignment. However, please note that without approval from me it will not be graded.
