Research Interests It is possible to partition the current research interests into two main lines: application of data mining techniques and context-aware data design and management. The investigated issues (and related publications) are: Context-aware data design, integration, customization and tailoring A methodology and a framework (Context- Aware Data Design, Integration, Customization and Tailoring) for managing (selection, 1
tailoring and integration) data from heterogeneous sources in a context-aware scenario. The research covers a broad spectrum; specific aspects currently taken into consideration are the following ones: Context- ADDICT as a methodology/framework (publications: [J.9][P.19][P.20][P.25]) Context modeling (publications: [J.6] [J.8]) Data tailoring (publications: [P.22][P.23]). Data mining algorithms and Intensional Query Answering XML is a rather verbose representation of semistructured data, which may require huge amounts of storage space. We have propose a summarized representation of XML data, based on the concept of instance pattern, which can both provide succinct information and be directly queried (publications: [C.1]. The physical representation of instance patterns exploits itemsets or association rules to summarize the content of XML datasets. Instance patterns may be used for (possibly partially) answering queries, either when fast and approximate answers are required, or when the actual dataset is not available, e.g., it is currently unreachable (publications: [J.5] [P.14][P.16]). Data mining algorithms and outlier detection We have proposed a method, based on data mining algorithms, which allows one to infer the normal behavior of objects, by extracting frequent rules from a given dataset. These rules are described in the form of quasi-functional dependencies and mined from the dataset by using association rules. Our approach allows us to consequently analyze anomalies with respect to the previously inferred dependencies: we can either derive the presence of erroneous data or highlight novel information which represents significant exceptions of frequent rules. Our method is independent of the considered database and directly infers rules from the data (publications: [J.3][P.24]).
