Before aademi units an advertise undergraduate onentrations or inlude them in their offerings as desribed in the university atalogs, they must be reommended for approval by the Senate Curriulum and Aademi Programs Committee and approved by the Exeutive Vie President and Provost of the University. Definition and minimum requirements: A onentration is a formalized sele-tion of ourses within a major. A onentration requires a minimum of 15 semester hours of whih at least 9 semester hours must be upper division. Speialized onentrations (e.g., BIS Conentrations) may have additional or dittrnt requirements. A onentration is offered by a single unit and is intended exlusively for students pursuing a partiular major. ARIZONA STATE PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH A NEW 1. OVERVIEW A. Provide a brief desription of the new onentration (inluding the speifi fous of the new onentration, relationship to other onentrations in this degree program, et). This Biomedial Sienes onentration within the Shool of Life Sienes will serve our undergraduate students who aim to pursue areer interests in health professions and biomedial researh. The proposed onentration and urriulum will align with the 2009 Report of the AAMC-HHMI Committee whih identified sientifi ompetenies that premedial students should demonstrate before entry into medial shool. In addition to integrative ourse work in biologial sienes, interdisiplinary sienes, medial humanities, and ommuniation, the onentration and urriulum will emphasize defined areas of knowledge, sientifi onepts, and skills. Upon ompletion of the BS in Biologial Sienes with a onentration in Biomedial Sienes, students will demonstrate knowledge of and ability to use basi priniples of biology, biohemistry, hemistry, mathematis, physis and statistis needed for the appliation of the sienes to health and disease. Reognizing that medial shools, graduate shools, and health professions require the ability to deal with rapidly hanging sientifi knowledge, the Biomedial Sienes onentration will emphasize ore, ritial intelletual skills neessary to sueed. It will offer a robust liberal arts eduation that values, reinfores, and integrates analytial thinking, reasoning, quantitative assessment, and analysis of omplex systems in biology. B. E~xplain the unit's need for the nev / onentration (e.g.. market demand, researh base, diretion of the disipline, and inwrdisiplinary onsiderations). HO\v will the new onentration omplement the existing degree program? Approximately 70% of fi eshmen entering the Shool of Life Sienes identify themselves at "pre-med." However, a large fration of pre-med students in Arizona hoose to attend the University of Arizona beause of the arhai pereption that the med shool in Tuson provides better tehnial training for pre-med students. Given the hange in emphasis of the top medial shools and the MCAT from oursework to broad ompetenies, the Biomedial Sienes onentration is an exellent opportunity for ASU to break down an inaurate stereotype. This onentration in the Shool of Life Sienes will provide future physiians the full range of ompetenies desired by medial shools. The proposed onentration is similar to the Genetis, Cell and Developmental Biology, and the Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior onentrations within the Biologial Sienes degree program. However, it will be more visible to pre-med students in Arizona, and it will streamline the program of study in aordane with the hanging demands on undergraduate eduation for future physiians. The new onentration emphasizes a strong and broad liberal eduation with a depth of knowledge and ritial intelletual skills neessary for professional suess. It will help those seeking premedial eduation or a areer path in biomedial researh to ahieve analytial and sientifi thinking skills needed to effetively address soietal problems of health and disease. 2. Support and Impat A. Provide a supporting letter fl omth hair of the aademi unit verit)dng that the proposed onentration has reeived Htulty approval through appropriate governane proedures in the unit and that the unit has the resoures to support the onentration as presented in the proposal, witjwut impating ore ourse resoures. See attahed letter from Brian Smith, Diretor, Shool of Life Sienes B. IdentifY other r~ln!.q-.q ASU programs and outline how the new onentration \Vill omplement these existing ASU programs. (If appliable, statements of support from potentially-afii,ted aademi unit administrators need to be inluded with this proposal submission.) Medial shools do not favor highly speialized tehnial degree programs, and they will admit qualified students fi om almost any degree program in CLAS. However, over the last I 0 years, the majority of ASU students who have attended medial shool have graduated from the Shool of Life Sienes. A signifiant number of students also attend medial shool from the Mediinal Chemistry onentration within Biohemistry but that onentration is very different from what we propose. C. Provide a supporting letter Jh)ln eah ollege/shool dean H om whih individual ourses, or the entire onentration, ar taken. 3. Aademi Cuniulum and Requirements A. List the knowledge, ompetenies, and skills (learning outomes) students should have when they omplete this proposed onentration. Examples of program learning outomes an be found at (http://www.asu.edu/oue/assessment.html). New Undergraduate Conentration Proposal 2 of 11

ARIZONA STATE PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH A NftW Learning outomes are based on the ore onepts and ompetenies identified in the 2009 Report of the AAMC-HHMI Committee on premedial eduation, and Vision and Change in Biology Undergraduate Eduation: A Call to Ation. Graduates of the Biologial Sienes- Biomedial Sienes onentration will be able to: I. demonstrate knowledge of and ability to use basi priniples in biology inluding onepts in genetis, ell biology, and physiology for the appliation of the sienes to health and disease 2. express pratial understanding of the proess of siene, inluding how to read and ritially examine urrent biomedial literature, develop hypotheses, design and ondut experiments, and quantitatively assess and analyze data 3. use written and oral ommuniation skills to effetively ommuniate sientifi onepts in biology to others with varying levels of sientifi literay 4. apply onepts in hemistry, organi hemistry, biohemistry, physis, and mathematis to omplex biologial problems. Biology eduators are developing more sophistiated and omprehensive assessments, but initially, we will assess program suess using the following riteria: We will assess our suess initially using the following riteria: OUTCOME I: Able to ondut a lab experiment, as evidened by ability to: identify, desribe, and apply the proesses of siene, inluding basi tehniques suh as the use of ontrols selet and defend the appropriate sientifi methodology either to test a given hypothesis and predition or to answer a given question as it relates to a desriptive study distinguish between information that is reognized as well established (beyond reasonable doubt) versus information that is tentative evaluate whether data supp01t a partiular hypothesis evaluate the validity of hypotheses and preditions put forth by other researhers Measure 1.1: Will reate senario with response questions (addressing above ompetenies) for BlO 281 Measure 1.2: Performane Criterion 1.1: 75% of students will master above ompetenies in BIO 281 Final lab assignment in BIO 282 (will address above ompetenies) Performane Criterion 1.2: 75% of majors will master above ompetenies in BIO 282 OUTCOME 2: Will demonstrate general ompeteny in genetis, as evidened by ability to: Identify and desribe major elements of the moleular anatomy of genes and genomes. Dedue information about genes, alleles, and gene funtions fl"01n analysis of geneti rosses and patterns of inheritane. Dedue information about genes, alleles, and gene funtions from analysis of geneti rosses and patterns of inheritane, as evidened by ability to: Infer modes of trait inheritane from human pedigrees Evaluate hypotheses about geneti transmission by applying statistial tests to the results of rosses Measure 1.1: Will reate senario with response questions (addressing above ompetenies) for BIO 340 Performane Criterion l.l ; 75% of students will master above ompetenies in BIO 340 B. Provide the admissions riteria for the proposed onentration. If they are idential to the admission riteria for the existing major and degree program under whih this onentr<1tion will be est<lblishd) please note that here. The admissions riteria for the Biomedial Sienes onentration is idential to the admissions riteria for the existing Biologial Sienes degree program under whih this onentration is established. C. From: Sot Shoenborn Sent: Thursday, Marh 13, 2014 8:44AM To: lxhell Paape C: Miles Orhinik Subjet: Impat statement-new onentration in SOLS H lxhell- The Shool of Life Sienes is looking to propose two new onentrations for Fall2015: Medial Mirobiology and Biologial Sienes: Biomedial Sienes. I have attahed the two proposals and wanted to see If you had any objetions. Basially, these onentrations would follow similar models In requiring either one semester (PHY 101) or 1 year (PHY 111/113 and PHY 112/114) of general physis. ClAS requested we run this by you to make sure you do not objet. At this point, it Is hard to say if this will inrease our overall enrollment or simply shift student preferenes in onentrations within SOLS. With that said, any objetions?
