Page 1 Solution Provided by: GLOBAL IPAM Solutions UNIFIED MANAGEMENT OF IP PLAN AND MULTI-VENDORS DNS AND DHCP SERVICES Address and naming services are at the heart of your IT system as they provide access to your company s internal and external applications. Local Area Networks and the Internet - new methods of communication, have offered fabulous tools to companies looking to increase productivity and profitability. The amount of IT hardware and software which connects to company networks has seen a spectacular growth in the number of necessary IP addresses, which can create serious operating constraints. Additionally DNS and DHCP services have become vital services both for applications access and network access. Many strategic business tools such as VoIP or email directly rely on those services. As a consequence the performance, reliability, scalability and easiness of deployment and administration of these services have become a key strategic asset. Internal IP address administration methods have not evolved a great deal. Many system administrators still use spreadsheets to cross-reference IP addresses. This solution quickly shows constraints and is costly when a large number of IP addresses must be managed and synchronized with the Domain Name System (DNS) and the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Another important issue is that the architecture of an address structure stems not only from the physical and logical organization of a network, but from a company s administrative organization too. This means that IP services management is a foundation of networks availability that have to match with global enterprise organization linked to delegation, administrative policies or process of resource deployments. SOLIDserver manages and centralizes information relating to IP, DNS and DHCP services to reference organize and plan resources. Our objectives are to provide a complete, simple solution, which will allow carrying out all the administration of these services, whilst adapting to the technical, human or administrative constraints of the IT installation. Based on a user-friendly and efficient Web interface SOLIDserver brings the capacity to streamline resources qualifications and consumption, whilst providing full control of the data coherency across the overall architecture. SOLIDserver s high level of automation capacities, increases process administration efficiencies, giving you the possibility to simplify the delegation of administration.
Page 2 Solution Centralized Repository: Consistency, Integrity and Uniqueness Control SOLIDserver stores all the information of the overall IP addressing plan and DNS and DHCP services configurations in an embedded database. It provides a single, comprehensive and holistic view of the entire address space deployed over a number of networks, with address pools and DNS information deployed on multiple DHCP and DNS servers throughout the network. SOLIDserver ensures the conformity of the configurations carried out by the users by checking the entered data and their coherence in your whole network. SOLIDserver eliminates IP addressing conflicts such as double IP addressing, subnet overlapping, naming errors or overlapping between DHCP services. Thus, SOLIDserver prevents configuration errors, it also guarantees the integrity and the reliability of DNS and DHCP servers. Global Visibility for Global Management Centralization of data is an important point but achieving efficiently is another one. SOLIDserver gives you a comprehensive access to the data across the overall network in one glance, based on customized or standard search criteria. Thus, data browsing and navigation can be done not only in a vertical approach (subnet per subnet or server per server) but also in a transversal approach. For example it is possible to display all IP addresses of all subnets or all RRs of all zones of all servers. In addition, several powerful search engines enable simple or complex searches based on multiple user-defined criteria (Ex: resources attributes). As a consequence multi criteria searches can be done not only within a server or a subnet but across all data networks. For instance it is possible to quickly identify all IP addresses allocated to a Hewlett Packard server for which the names start by «sr.x». All assets can be tracked down by IP, hostname, MAC address or user-defined criteria (Ex: vendor, serial number, OS, location etc ). IPAM Appliance Global View DNS Appliances DNS Internet Microsoft DNS DNS - DHCP Appliances Medium Office Head Quarter This approach ensures the real capability to dive into the SOLIDserver s embedded database according to user-defined criteria and select precisely the required information for efficient management that matches with your operational needs. There are no more hierarchical arborescence dependences constraining to browse the network branch by branch and server by server. Multiple IP Addressing Plan Management-Overlapping Address Spaces Management SOLIDserver enables you to manage an unlimited number of identical IP addressing plans in overlapping. Each IP plan can be seen and managed independently from the others in a dedicated IP Space. IP resources coherency, integrity and uniqueness control is ensured within an IP Space. It is also possible to create links among IP Spaces to simplify NAT management among networks.
Page 3 Solution DNS and DHCP servers are associated with one specific IP Space and are thus managed with a comprehensive consistency control with the IP plan. This is an important functionality especially following an acquisition or a merger of companies with identical IP addressing plans. In that situation it is mandatory to manage all IP spaces of the global network from the same centralized point, this is possible with SOLIDserver IP Spaces. Flexible and Scalable IP Plan Modeling The IP addressing plan is the foundation of the network upon which network services are organized and deployed. The IP addressing structure can be defined according to one or several criteria which can be technical, administrative or organizational for example. As a consequence one of the fundamental requirements for an efficient IPAM solution is to ensure the possibility to model existing and future IP plan organizations according to your needs and criteria. Flexibility and Scalability: SOLIDserver enables you to model an IP addressing plan precisely and easily, according to multiple criteria. It is possible to mix and match models to construct a tailor-made address structure for your company. There is no limitation on the number of levels and depth that can defined in the IP plan. All branches of this tailor-made tree structure can be independent or not. Therefore it is fast and easy to design and manage VLSM subnets (Variable length Subnet Masking). The flexibility of hierarchical tree structures certifies the easiness of modifications. It is possible to reorganize, extend, and migrate IP addressing plans according to the evolution of your enterprise. Engineering Rules Applied on the IP Addressing Plan: Hierarchical IP structures enable you to define specific properties, attributes and constraints to be applied on resources and objects, such as name and size, for each level of the IP addressing plan. The resources properties can be inherited from a level to a sub-level, to be included in a hierarchical organization of engineering rules mapped on the hierarchical IP plan structure. This unique and unequalled approach allows you to adapt your IPAM tool not only to your specific IP plan structure but also to your engineering rules of resources deployment, applied to each level of your IP plan. Unified IPAM and DNS-DHCP Management SOLIDserver is a unified management solution enabling you to manage and deploy your IP addressing plan with DNS and DHCP services, from one tool and in one single operation. For instance, it is possible to create a /24 subnet with one or several ranges of IP addresses allocated through DHCP service, in one operation. All configurations will be carried out automatically by SOLIDserver, to configure DNS and DHCP services according to specified options. Local database updates with subnet parameters and DNS-DHCP configurations SOLIDserver DNS and DHCP services
Page 4 Solution SOLIDserver GUI displays all information in a single view for immediate access. DNS, DHCP and IP plan data are easily consolidated. A manual allocation or deletion of an IP address in the subnet will automatically update DNS service configurations by creating or deleting A, PTR and CNAME records on the appropriate DNS server(s). SOLIDserver ensures a dynamic and integrated management of IPAM with DNS and DHCP services in a single process, insuring the highest level of quality and efficiency. Multi-Vendors DNS and DHCP Services Management Most of the time, the architecture of the network is a result of the fusion, integration or conjunction of independent networks. In addition many organizations run Microsoft DNS and DHCP for internal clients, while running BIND DNS servers for external queries. As a consequence, the infrastructure management of companies requires flexibility and adaptability in their administration of DNS & DHCP servers. SOLIDserver provides a unique user interface that unifies the management of multi-vendor DNS and DHCP servers. This allows the management of different server providers such as Microsoft DNS&DHCP servers, BIND 9.x, ISC DHCP, Cisco IOS DHCP servers as well as EfficientIP s own SOLIDserver which are Network Services appliances that deliver DNS-DHCP-NTP and TFTP services. SOLIDserver Master High Availability mode Global Visibility Global Control Global Management Cisco IOS DHCP SOLIDservers in HA DNS DHCP Open source DNS DHCP Microsoft DNS DHCP The single and consistent user interface used to view and manage these multivendor configurations reduces errors, saves time and eliminates the requirement of having to replace existing DHCP and DNS servers. SOLIDserver is an abstraction layer which masks the specific processes of each DNS&DHCP vendor to network administrators. DNS and DHCP services are no more managed server per server but as a global service. It is possible to simultaneously configure Microsoft DNS servers and BIND servers, modify VoIP options on all DHCP servers or create transversal reports to get an immediate comprehensive understanding of network services configurations.
Pseudo Master Page 5 Solution Smart Architecture : Managing Network Services Architecture Why Is the Current Approach of DNS-DHCP Service Management Limited, Insufficient and Risky? Even if it is done from a centralized platform, the current practice is based on a server by server approach. This approach is not sufficient to ensure service reliability, security and easiness of management. High risks of misconfigurations No Best Practices enforcement to ensure the high security of the network services architecture No automation of architecture deployment and management Difficult and risky architecture changes Indeed, even if the configuration has been simplified with GUI, it is still complex, expensive and requires experts to deploy and configure all servers in coherent architectures of DNS-DHCP services. There is no process to check the relevance of your server configurations according to best practices and to the requirements of your network services architecture, such as for instance a Master/Slave or Stealth DNS. In addition, there is no configuration automation of the service architecture to simplify deployments and ensure compliances with the best practices. Consequences of this complexity are directly linked to critical risks in term of security and availability of your network services. How Does EfficientIP Solve This? The SmartArchitecture is a new approach to IPAM and DNS-DHCP services management to drastically simplify deployment and administration of your network service. Thanks to SmartArchitectures, EfficientIP offers the capability to manage your DNS-DHCP services not only at the server level but at the architecture level. SmartArchitecture are State of the Art templates of DNS-DHCP architectures that are applied on a list of SOLIDservers or Multi-Vendor servers (Microsoft, Open source, Nominum, Cisco ) to automatically deploy and manage the architectures as one entity. It is now very easy to add or remove DNS-DHCP servers from the architecture; the SmartArchitecture will automatically manage all configuration file modifications. The overall process management is carried out at the SmartArchitecure level by the SmartArchitecture itself. Microsoft DNS and DHCP Services Management EfficientIP is a Microsoft certified Independent Software Vendor. The important point to underline is that it is the technology which has been certified by Microsoft, validating EfficientIP s solutions compatibility with Microsoft s Technologies. EfficientIP s solutions can handle all DNS and DHCP records and secure protocols used by Microsoft in order to remotely configure and monitor Microsoft DNS-DHCP services. These protocols based on strong authentications, integrate the components of the Active Directory architecture and Name Controllers.
Page 7 Solution Mass Updates Across All Networks and Servers Manage a Service and not Servers: EfficientIP has developed a unique approach to IPAM by changing the way IP plan and DNS&DHCP services can be managed. Based on the centralized repository and the transversal capability to access data across the entire infrastructure, EfficientIP has eliminated hierarchical arborescence dependences which forced you to manage your network branch by branch and server by server. It is possible to simultaneously browse, select and manage several networks and DHCP servers and change the options of all subnets dedicated to VoIP in one operation. We have made it possible to take only one easy action to identify and change all resource records of all DNS zones of all DNS servers for which a TTL has to be changed. In a few seconds, all IP addresses allocated to HP printers can be identified and selected in order to modify their names for example. This unique and powerful approach is a fundamental feature to ensure easiness to find and manage network infrastructures as a single system or unit per unit. IPAM Web Portal «On Demand» to Match with Relevant Operational Criteria Efficiency of the administration relies upon the capability to browse, list and select resources across the entire database. As a consequence this efficiency is finally directly linked with the flexibility of the interface of administration tools in order to display appropriate information. The SOLIDserver web interface can be fully adapted to customized needs in order to list relevant information from IP resources. Each user defined attribute of a resource, such as phone number, serial number or location, can be displayed with the listing of IP data. An administrator can add or remove displayed attributes for each type of object: subnets, zones, scopes, addresses etc... For example, it is possible to list administrative information associated with a list of IP addresses such as the building and floor number or support phone number of a network for each subnet of the subnets list. Each attribute has an autonomous search engine. The search criteria can be refined by using functions such as for example match strictly, different from, or strictly over. It is possible to easily identify all IP addresses allocated to printer objects
Page 8 Solution with a name starting by pr-us-ny across all networks. The unrestricted browsing capabilities across the entire server architecture associated with the userdefined web portal are fundamental and necessary features which bring flexibility and simplicity to services deployment according to operational needs. The IPAM Web portal builder warranties the adaptability and scalability of our solution and therefore ensures the durability of your investments. Resource Qualification Is Under Control Thanks to Object Templates Daily network operations require deployments of IPAM resources with both speed and coherency. One of the most important issues of collaborative tools is to ensure that everybody respects defined methods. Customizable Forms for Resource Qualification: SOLIDserver delivers a unique solution enabling you to graphically create unlimited numbers of partially or fully customized templates of forms for network objects. Each template, known as «Class», can have a specific list of fields such as a MAC address, phone number or whatever has to be qualified by the user according to your company s needs. For example, it is possible to create an Object Class for printers with only a few fields to be qualified, MAC address, vendor and host name. A field can be for instance a free text, a menu list, or a constrained structure such as MAC address structure or naming convention for the naming of an IP address. For example all IP addresses allocated to printers will be automatically named «pr-dept-xxx». User-defined form for printer: User-defined list of fields User-defined field format and properties Templates of forms in SOLIDserver can formalize qualification processes of IPAM resources in order to: Streamline resource qualification Streamline resource consumption Guide users and mask process complexity to simplify delegation Object templates («Class») can be created and applied to all resources: Subnets, Pools, server or Zones. The potential for the creation of different fields or menus is endless. GUI Studio: Drag and Drop Tool for Creating Resource Templates The GUI Studio module has Drag and Drop tools to allow you to create specific templates of forms for your IP resources in only few minutes:
Page 9 Solution Drag and Drop Template Builder for all IPAM resources Address, subnet, scopes, zones etc Advanced field properties for templates to control resource qualification Free text, menu list, constrained structure (Ex: MAC address or phone number), suggested fields, automatic qualification, or not editable field Unlimited number of fields per template of IPAM resource Local inventory of enterprise attributes and data: CustomDB (DataBase) Module Streamline available information in menu lists Simplify menu list management Easy integration with external tools (Ex: Asset management) Inheritance of resources properties from templates Naming conventions, size, options, parameters User-defined list of fields User-defined field type and properties SOLIDserver streamlines your IP addressing & naming plan by controlling the qualification of the registered data according to tailored rules. Each partition of the addressing plan can have its own rules of documentation and its own methods of organization. It is then possible to ensure a uniform working method with all administrative teams. Network Organization with Templates SOLIDserver enables you to create templates of networks for automating and streamlining subnet creations. For instance it is possible to create a template for a branch office with specific properties: Subnet size Automatic Subnet name Automatic IP address name enforcement Automatic subnet splits in IP ranges»» IP pool #1 dedicated to network objects (manual IP address allocation)»» IP pool #2 dedicated to server objects (manual IP address allocation)»» IP pool #3 dedicated to printer objects (manual IP address allocation)»» IP pool #4 dedicated to DHCP client (Dynamic IP address allocation) When creating a new subnet, the administrator can select a template to apply and all specific properties of the template will be applied to the subnet and objects inside the subnet. It is possible to restrict authorized IP address templates to be used in each IP range of the subnet. For instance, authorize only the use of a Printer template for IP addresses within a Printer range. Similarly, it is possible to create dedicated templates for VoIP subnets with specific predefined options, size, naming conventions or DNS templates for internal or external zones.
Page 10 Solution Active IP Address and Port Tracking for IPAM Reconciliation The integrity of your IT registered data is of important value to your company. EfficientIP s solutions supply tools to automatically document IP address attributes. IPLocator is a network tool that offers industry leading network reconciliation capabilities. IPLocator provides precise and comprehensive views of network connections. IPLocator brings a global vision with a centralized analysis of your addresses location. Automated IP plan documentation means that administrators do not have to manually input this information in SOLIDserver. IPLocator discovers the physical and logical topology of the network infrastructure bringing a real capacity to watch over, follow and control the IP addresses location of your devices. Dynamic Devices Self Documenting: For all IP and MAC addresses discovered, IPLocator identifies the following key information: Switch name, Switch Slot, Switch port, Switch Description, Switch OS version, VLAN number, switch status, port speed, Link status, First seen and Last seen. History of IP/MAC Addresses Mobility: IPLocator identifies the changes of IP or MAC address location on the network. This brings a global view of the company s stations mobility by address localization -switch, slot, port-, by VLAN offset of an IP and/or a MAC address. The history information displayed shows when, where and who was and is connected, for an easy tracking of IP and MAC mobility. IPAM Reconciliation: IPLocator enables you to compare theoretical IP addresses locations with discovered information. In one glance it is easy to identify incoherencies and receive alerts by email. Advanced reports supply an easy, comprehensive and summarized view. Remove Infected Devices: Based on discovery results it is easy to locate and remove an infected station in order to provide an optimum reactivity to security alerts. Reclaim Unused IP and MAC Addresses: EfficientIP s discovery process can identify unused IP and MAC addresses during a given laps of time. Based on this information it is easy to determine whether IP addresses can be released or reallocated. Control IP Port Occupancy Rate: EfficientIP s discovery process can identify switch ports which have remained unused during a certain laps of time. Based on this information it is easy to determine whether switch ports can be released or reallocated. This is particularly important in datacenters to avoid overconsumption of Giga Ethernet ports to unused servers.
Page 11 Solution Discover Unauthorized Devices: EfficientIP s discovery can launch alerts when unknown devices are detected on the network. Control Who Can Do What, How and When Bring Users Responsibilities in Line with Right Delegation: SOLIDserver structures the delegation of administration in a precise and methodic way, according to your organizational context. SO- LIDserver adapts to all management policies, allowing you to create unlimited user profiles. Granular or very specific delegation rights enable you to implement a hierarchical and/or matrix organization. There are no more hierarchical arborescence dependences forcing you to delegate the administration network branch by branch and server by server. Thanks to this approach, the company s organization is implemented transparently and independently according to the specific requirements of each SOLIDserver user. For example it is possible to create a group of administrators which have a restricted access to IP pools dedicated to printer objects across all subnets. Control Deployment of Authorized Objects: SOLIDserver enables you to control the templates that can be applied by users on IP addresses, subnets and all IP resources. For instance a printer group will not have the possibility to deploy other object templates than the printer template. In this case, SO- LIDserver will enforce the use of dedicated templates for printer objects. Users are easily guided and administration processes are streamlined. Adapt Product Interface according to Level of Privileges: In compliance with to the user s rights, the user interface will be automatically profiled in order to simplify the navigation, the reading of the information, and the user s interactions. A group of users which only have reading rights will not be able to see menus that allow the creation or deletion of resources. Hide Confidential Information: All information that is not authorized to a group of administration is hidden. For example, confidential information related to firewall addresses in a subnet will be hidden to the printer administrative group. These features make sure that external contractor will not have access to confidential information linked to network security. Historical of Administration Tasks: SOLIDserver logs all administration tasks carried out, both manually operated by users and automated by SOLIDserver, enabling advanced searches by user, object type and date. Secured Users Authentication: User authentication can be carried out locally by SOLIDserver or remotely on an external authentication server such as LDAP, Active Directory, and RADIUS.
Page 12 Solution Work Flow-Life Cycle Management Unify Collaborative Processes: SOLIDserver s Work Flow offers a unique methodology for streamlining request management processes. SOLIDserver enables several groups of administrators to work around the same IPAM repository and share mutual work methods. Requests are defined in forms. The content of each form depends on the type of request and can be fully customized with graphic tools to fit with your company s requirements. Basically a request is identified by a serial number, requestor, addressee, requested object type, request status, creation date, and last modification date. The request life cycle can be easily managed and followed-up by users thanks to the request status - accepted, refused, cancelled, in progress. For example a user group can submit a request to a Super user team for subnet extension. The Super user team will check the request and can validate or refuse it. After the approval step, the new subnet is allocated to the request either automatically or manually. Requestor is informed of the request approval and can use this new resource. Store Request and Assignment History: All information related to IP resources att ributions is stored and available in the SOLIDserver database. Users can interrogate this knowledge database and obtain a historic of the cumulated requests. The interrogation can be realized thanks to multiple criteria: by user, by references, or by type of actions. High Availability of IPAM-DNS-DHCP-NTP-TFTP Services SOLIDserver delivers an unmatched level of reliability for your critical IP services with complete builtin high availability mechanisms to deliver global continuity. Ethernet Port Failover: The Ethernet port failover mechanism allows you to connect SOLIDserver appliances to two switch port, one active link and one passive link. In case the active link fails, the passive link will ensure connection continuity in less than 1 second. This feature ensures the physical connection of the device.
Page 13 Solution CARP: CARP is the next generation of VRRP enabling to hide several SOLIDservers behind a Virtual IP address. One of them is elected as Leader and will receive all requests from the VIP. In case of unavailability of the leader SOLIDserver, the connection will be switched to an available SOLIDserver in less than 1 second. Key Benefits of CARP: VIP per network service: Several VIPs can be associated with the same SOLIDserver appliances. A VIP can be associated with DNS services and another to TFTP and another to NTP. CARP is at the application level. CARP does not only check that the link is up, but also checks the availability of the service. The VIP can be allocated to an unlimited number of SOLIDservers : A VIP can be associated not only to 2 SOLIDservers but to 3, 10 or more SOLIDservers High Availability of the DNS Master Service: CARP enables you to define a group of DNS servers, with a single Virtual IP address as the master DNS server, for DNS clients. In case a server crashes the process will automatically switch all DNS client requests to an available DNS server in a transparent way ensuring service continuity of your DNS Master service in less than 1 sec. SOLIDserver DHCP High Availability with Active-Active DHCP Failover: SOLIDserver network services ensure 100% of DHCP service availability with an active/active failover mechanism. Both servers can answer to DHCP request with a full coherency control eliminating all risks of double IP address allocation. The two SOLIDservers can be deployed on 2 different networks to be integrated in geographical disaster recovery architecture. Thanks to the Smart Architecture the deployment and the administration of the DHCP architecture in high availability is carried out automatically. Page 14 Solution Disaster Recovery Processes Multi-Vendors DNS and DHCP Disaster Recovery Processes: SOLIDserver enables simple, fast and secure disaster recovery processes. SOLIDserver stores all required information for multi-vendor DNS and DHCP services recovery in its embedded database. As an example, in case of a Microsoft DHCP server crash SOLIDserver can push down the complete configuration of the crashed server, onto a new server, with the exact configuration it had just before the crash. In a short period of time the DHCP service will be up without painful administration tasks. All risks of conflicting IP address allocation are eliminated. SOLID Master Push down of service configurations Crashed Microsoft DNS/DHCP Server Recovered Microsoft DNS/DHCP server Disaster Recovery Processes for SOLIDserver : SOLIDserver has a local embedded database with integrity control mechanisms which requires no ongoing maintenance. The local database of all SOLIDserver appliances can be replicated in real time on an appliance called SOLID Master. The database replication includes the entire service, network and system configurations of the appliances. These means that the DNS and DHCP architecture is its own backup architecture. In addition, backups can be done on a FTP server. A high availability mode of the SOLID Master can be deployed by electing another SOLID Master in recovery mode. In case the primary SOLID Master fails, the recovery SOLID Master is activated in a few seconds without any service interruption of remote servers.
