An Overview of the LPN to RN Transition Pathway Course The LPN to RN Transition Pathway course provides Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) with the opportunity to pursue an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing (ADN). Successful completion of the course along with the 2 nd year of the ADN curriculum provides students with the eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). For admission to the transition pathway course, LPNs must meet the prerequisite requirements and have an unencumbered license to practice Practical Nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students who are successful in completing the transition pathway course concurrently with Maternal/Newborn Nursing (NUR 245) and Parent/Child Nursing (NUR 246), will be integrated into the third semester of the ADN curriculum. Note: The Virginia State Board of Nursing requires that all LPNs enrolled in the LPN-RN Transition course (NUR 115) also take Maternal/Newborn Nursing (NUR 245) and Parent/Child Nursing (NUR 246). Essential Functional Abilities The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. has determined the following categories of functional abilities are essential for licensure and job performance of a member of the nursing profession. A brief description and examples of representative activities/attributes are included. Admission Requirements for the LPN-RN Pathway Course 1. Graduated from High School/GED/Home School Students must have either graduated from high school or have completed their GED equivalent or provide a completed home school transcript. An advanced degree of Associate s or higher may be considered in lieu of high school graduation. 2. License to practice as an LPN in the State of Virginia, or multi-state licensure. 3. Applicants must have worked for 12 consecutive months as an LPN (by December 1, application deadline). If applicant has not practiced as an LPN for 12 consecutive months prior to enrollment, the NLN PN Fundamentals Exam and the NLN Adult Health Nursing Exam will be required. 4. In addition to their LPN license students must have completed the following prerequisite courses or equivalent: High school chemistry or NAS 05, BIO 141, PSY 230, SDV 100. 5. Academic Placement Testing Applicants will need to complete placement tests in Math and English to determine if remedial work is required. Remedial work must be completed before being considered for admission to the LPN- RN Transition Pathway. Previous college course(s) may exempt an applicant from placement testing (based upon review of official transcripts). 7. Admission to College Students must be admitted to DSLCC before being considered for admission to the nursing program. ADMISSION TO THE COLLEGE DOES NOT GUARANTEE ADMISSION TO THE NURSING PROGRAM 8. Nursing Entrance Examination The LPN must take the required nursing examination in order to be considered for the LPN to RN Transition Course. Passing the examinations with the required score is only part of the acceptance process and does not guarantee admission into the program. Applicants will be ranked by NACE I percentile and GPA. NURSING ENTRANCE EXAMINATION REQUIRED SCORE Foundations of Nursing (NACE I) 45 percentile or higher Contact Nursing Office (540-863-2838) for nursing entrance examination registration information. Cost of registration and test are $60.00 each time test is taken The exam may be taken 3 times between January 1 and December 1 for consideration of spring admission. The exam must be completed by December 1 for consideration for spring admission. 9. Grade Point Average (GPA) Nursing candidates must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 before being considered for admission to the Nursing Program. 10. NLN Achievement Examinations All applicants will be required to pass the NLN PN Pharmacology exam. If applicant has not practiced as an LPN for 12 consecutive months prior to enrollment, the NLN PN Fundamentals Exam and the NLN Adult Health Nursing Exam will be required. Contact Nursing Office (540-863-2838) for examination registration information. Cost of registration and test are $18.00 each time each test is taken. Each test may be taken a maximum of two [2] times All testing must be completed by December 1. NLN ACHIEVEMENT EXAMINATION REQUIRED SCORE PN Fundamentals 45 percentile or higher Adult Health Nursing 45 percentile or higher PN Pharmacology 45 percentile or higher ***LPNs who have taken any of these examinations within the last 5 years should request copies of the scores to be sent to the Nursing Office. 11. Nursing Application Form Forms are available in the Nursing Office Applications will be accepted until December 1 for January 2016 admission. Deadline for submission of all the required admission criterion is December 1, 2015. 12. Nursing Program Head may require an appointment with individual students to clarify information submitted for admission. 13. Notification Policy Nursing candidates will be notified via formal letter regarding admission status by December 22, 2015. Those offered admission to the Nursing program MUST complete the following for final acceptance: 1. Health Form: (Appendix A) Up-to-date immunizations: o Tdap (Tetanus booster) o MMR o Varicella o Hepatitis B (strongly recommend, but may decline) o Flu vaccine (during season) Two-step tuberculin skin test (TST) Physical exam: Pre-Entrance Medical Record Form NOTE: Additional costs may be incurred depending on individual immunization requirements. 2. Drug Screen and Background Check These screenings MUST be obtained through Certified Background, Inc. o Information is available in the Nursing Office or call 540-863-2838 o Costs for these screenings are the responsibility of those offered admission and are approximately $100.00 o Deadline for these screenings to be completed is January 11, 2016. Screenings may have to be repeated based on clinical settings contractual agreements. Students are subject to random screen at any time. Failure to submit and/or pass the drug screen or background check will result in denial of admission to and/or dismissal from the Nursing Program. 3. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Infant, child, and adult CPR and AED training is required Deadline for submitting an up-to-date card to the Nursing Office is December 1, 2015, with the admission criterion. Lancaster Community College Associate s Degree in Nursing Program, the student will be participating in a physically, mentally, and emotionally rigorous program of study.
