introduc on The XI Interna onal Trienniale of Architecture will take place in Cracow from the 8 th to the 22 nd of April 2009. The main exhibi ons will take place at Bunkier Sztuki (the Art Bunker) in Cracow. The opening of the Triennale will be on the 8 th of April at 6 p.m. at Bunkier Sztuki. This will be Easter Wednesday, when the prepara ons for Easter will overlap with this fes- val of architecture cons tu ng the pinnacle of the array of works and workshops conducted beforehand. The opening of the Triennale will be ceremoniously modest designated for Cracow circles. The great ceremony for the Triennale of Architecture will take place on Friday the 17 th of April. This will be the opportunity for the presen ng of prizes, the Grand Prix, the Public s Prizes and many others. During the week between the two ceremonies there will take place vernissages and workshops of the accompanying exhibi ons. dimension of architecture There exists the need to turn a en on to the architectonic form and its spa ality. The social role of architecture, its sociological and anthropological dimension is something obvious today, yet its beauty and propor on have taken a backstage. However, architecture does not exist without dimension and scale. Reference to human dimension and its func on is fundamental for architecture. The dimension of architecture cons tutes the need to draw a en on to the architectonic and urbanis c form, to the posi ve form of the object and the nega ve form of architecture as voids between objects. The first dimension of architecture, its length, stretches along the side of roads, connec ng groupings of people into a web and then into the ssue of the web. Architecture does not stop following the rails and lanes of traffic with its unending facades to the boundlessness of the globe. This dimension of architecture may be checked by the compe on of young architects designing stops for the rail communica on in Cracow. Architecture appears at the stop and then disappears with the speed of the train only to reappear at the next sta- on. Maybe architecture is linear space happening in the en re expanse between sta ons? The second dimension of architecture is its plan. This is the means of the organiza on of space between the permanent elements, between the construc on, divisions and the elements of ver cal communica on. Length has no meaning here, in a way similar to height. Is architecture without eleva on possible, where the value is merely the parameters of the plan or a sec on? The third dimension of architecture, its height, should be verified in the scale of the city and its plan. The development plan determines the loca on of the building mass in space, yet the three-dimensional spa al composi on does not always cons tute the basis of planning.the third dimension of architecture should be boldly evaluated on the example of 50 high-rise blocks for Cracow arranged in possible localiza ons. Architecture of a human scale does not mean architecture that is low; nobody said that the pyramids are too high. Nobody has said that the mountains are too high and the seas too deep. Height is a ques on of architectonic composi on and there is no absolute dimension. Should the medieval tower have its modern day con nua on? We should also check whether there exists a fourth architectural dimension, whether architecture can move in space and what is its connec on with me. Can architecture possess more dimensions? It is through compe ons, conferences and exhibi ons that these ques ons should be answered. page 3
