Program Highlights The program will start with a full day orienta on and class on Building Capacity for Sustainable High Performance taught by Dr. Leonard Greenhalgh PhD,, Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. The following ten (10) months of interac ve evening classes, covering Financial Statements and Accoun ng, Insurance and Bonding, Architectural Blueprint Reading, Understanding Contracts, Es ma ng, Purchasing, Project Management and Presenta on Skills, will enable par cipants to study the fundamentals of growing a business in today s compe ve environment. In addi on, monthly seminars will be facilitated by various community partners. The Microso Excel training will provide par cipants with the skills to create es mates and to analyze important data. The program will culminate with a capstone team presenta on to industry leaders. Take the Beltway West to Old Georgetown Road (Exit 36). Take Old Georgetown Road South toward Bethesda. Drive approximately three miles un l you reach Woodmont Avenue. Turn right onto Woodmont Avenue. Go one-half block and turn le into the Public Parking Garage just before the traffic light at Edgemoor Road. Walk out of the garage via the Old Georgetown Road exit. The Clark Building is on the corner of Edgemoor and Old Georgetown Road, 7500 Old Georgetown Road. From the South Take I-95 North to the Capital Beltway (I-495). Take the Beltway North. Stay on the Beltway to Old Georgetown Road (Exit 36). Take Old Georgetown Road South toward Bethesda. Drive approximately three miles un l you reach Woodmont Avenue. 6 Program Overview and Requirements The Clark Construc on Group Strategic Partnership Development Program is a 10-month program designed to supplement the capabili es of local, small, and disadvantaged businesses in the Metropolitan area. The program is structured in an interac ve format with a focus on providing core construc on management and business skills to program par cipants. Courses will be taught by local industry experts and will include interac ve classroom learning, team projects and presenta ons. The program will start with an orienta on and a full day session on Building Capacity for Sustainable High Performance taught by Dr. Leonard Greenhalgh, PhD, Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. The following ten (10) months of interac ve evening classes will enable par cipants to study the fundamentals of growing a business in today s compe ve environment. Students will be expected to par cipate in classroom discussions and to meet with their team outside of the classroom to complete assignments. The program will culminate with a capstone team presenta on to industry leaders. Upon comple on of their last class, par cipants will have four (4) weeks to prepare for the group presenta on. In addi on to the formal classroom training, monthly seminars from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. will be facilitated by various community partners. Program par cipants are required to complete all of the courses, a end at least six of the eight seminars and par cipate in the presenta on of the capstone project (this is mandatory). Brogan, CPA Cli onlarsonallen, LLP Mr. Brogan has over thirteen years of experience working with construc on contractors, principally in performing accoun ng, audit, tax, and management consul ng services. Mr. Brogan has assisted numerous contractors with evalua ng new accoun ng so ware. He works closely with several bonding agents and lenders who are familiar with the construc on industry. He is a CPA licensed in the state of Maryland and is a member of the American Ins tute of Cer fied Public Accountants and the Maryland Associa on of Cer fied Public Accountants. Insurance and Bonding Dwight E. Crone, CPCU, Partner McFarlin Insurance Agency, LL Mr. Crone has over twenty years of insurance and risk management experience and has been a partner at McFarlin Insurance Agency since Established in 1939, McFarlin Insurance Agency specializes in providing risk management services for firms in the construc on industry. Mr. Crone has served as agency representa ve on insurers producers councils and chaired the 1995 producer council for Selec ve Insurance Group. 10 Financial Statements and Accounting Course Description This course will begin with the introduc on of accoun ng for construc on contracts and will cover job cost accoun ng, calcula on of under and over billings, job profitability, billed retainage, backlog calcula on, AIA documents and a sample chart of accounts. The next topic covered will be financial statements of contractors, which will include sample financial statements, overhead rates, labor burdens and company and industry ra os. Mr. Brogan will review bonding requirements as they relate to bonding capacity and the documenta on typically required by bonding companies as well as lender requirements such as lines of credit, loan types, and loan collateral and documenta on that is normally required by bankers. An overview of current accoun ng so ware for contractors will allow you to compare between industry-specific so ware and off the shelf so ware including QuickBooks. Various construc on taxa on topics will also be discussed. 11 Insurance and Bonding Course Description There are many issues that are taken into considera on by surety companies when underwri ng the credit worthiness of contractors. However, all of the evalua ons can typically be lumped into three broad categories: Character, Capacity, Capital. These three headings are otherwise known as the three C s. Character refers to the integrity of the owners of the business en ty to be bonded. Capacity concentrates on the ability of the company to do the work to be bonded. Capital is concerned with the financial condi on of the company to be bonded. Over the span of four weeks, this course will cover many issues related to both surety and insurance. You will be exposed to the type of informa on underwriters request when evalua ng risk and why they ask for it. At the conclusion of the course, you will have a feel for the processes involved in surety and insurance underwri ng and thereby have a be er apprecia on of the role both play in suppor ng the construc on industry. Topics include graphic informa on found on site plans, eleva ons, plan views, sec onals, and detail drawings used in both commercial and residen al drawings. 13 Microsoft Excel Course Description In this course, students will use Microso Office Excel to create spreadsheets and workbooks that they can use to store, manipulate, and share data. This course is intended for students who wish to gain the founda onal understanding of Microso Office Excel that is necessary to create and work with electronic spreadsheets. To be successful in this course, you should be familiar with using personal computers and you should have used the mouse and keyboard. You should be comfortable in the Windows environment and be able to use Windows to manage informa on on the computer. Specifically, you should be able to launch and close programs; navigate to informa on stored on the computer; and manage files and folders. This course will also address the ethical issues involved in purchasing, with emphasis on recognizing and handling situa ons in which the integrity of par es involved in the purchasing process may come into ques on. 16 Estimating Course Description In this course, you will learn about the art of the bid and what happens in the bid room. This sets the groundwork for your project s execu on strategy. You will also examine the types of bids prepared by Clark and ul mately, how we win our contracts. Es ma ng will provide you with a solid understanding of how a job is priced, the factors that contribute to the shaping of a bid, and how the basis of a job s project schedule is established by ac vi es during the es ma ng phase. This course will also prepare you for your role as project manager in the bid room on bid day.
