Default Local and Remote Directories FTP is used to transfer files from one computer to another. Those files are stored in directories or folders on web servers and must be in the correct folder in order to display on web pages correctly. There are two main directories used when transferring files: the default local directory and the default remote directory. CuteFTP allows you to set these directory names as default so you don't have to find them each time you connect. To open CuteFTP and configure these default directories, double click the icon on your desktop. Setting the Default Local Directory The Default Local Directory is the first local folder that will be open in CuteFTP at the time that you attach to your site. A local folder refers to the fact that the files are located on your computer's hard drive, as opposed to the web site server's hard drive. When you start CuteFTP, the Site Manager should open as well as the transfer window. If Site Manager does not open automatically, click on the File menu and select Site Manager.

Setting the Default Remote Directory The Default Remote Directory is the file folder that will first open when you attach to your FTP site. It is usually the location of your web site files on the host server. In the case that you have Personal Web Space, there is no need to change the location of the web site files (this field can stay blank). In the case that you have a web site hosted by NuVox (i.e. www.mysite.com), the Default Remote Directory will be /html. The web site files (including the Index file) should be uploaded into that directory.
