History and Social Science HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE If you have a passion for history, want to prepare for law school, or work in a govermental or civic capacity, the History and Social Science major is an excellent pathway to achieving your goals. The History and Social Sciences major offers a liberal arts approach by exploring a meaningful, holistic and challenging set of disciplines. Taught by experienced, scholarly faculty, the major covers U.S and non-u.s. history, geography, economics, and political science with a strong emphasis on writing, reading, critical thinking and research skills. The ASP staff is extremely helpful and always ready to assist with whatever needs I have. My job has required frequent travel in the past and my professors have been very understanding and flexible with my work schedule. I could have easily taken courses online at numerous schools but there is nothing like attending classes in person and getting to know fellow students or have that one on one interaction with your professor. COMPREHENSIVE LIBERAL STUDIES The Comprehensive Liberal Studies major offers students with unusual and varied interests the opportunity to pursue studies in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics divisions of the College. Unlike more traditional departmental approaches, it is a unique major that allows each student to design an individual program of study that closely reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the liberal arts and his or her own interests. Design your own program of study. Each student expresses his or her intellectual focus through a declaration-of-major essay and plans a course of study guided by an adviser. Every plan draws from courses in each of the College s three academic divisions. Comprehensive Liberal Studies

Financial Aid FINANCIAL AID At Virginia Wesleyan, we believe no student should be denied access to a private, quality liberal arts education because of limited financial resources. In addition to traditional financial aid opportunities, we offer a number of programs geared specifically toward adults. We make it affordable. GENERAL FINANCIAL AID Adult students who are enrolled in six or more semester hours may qualify for financial aid through a Stafford Loan or Pell Grant. Be sure to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov to maximize the value of your award. Use Virginia Wesleyan s school code: 003767. The ADULT INCENTIVE GRANT is provided to all students admitted to the Adult Studies Program. The grant significantly reduces the tuition for adult students. This grant is comparable to receiving a scholarship each semester you are enrolled. CORPORATE RATE PROGRAM The Adult Studies Program offers a reduced tuition rate to students who are employees of companies that agree to participate in our Corporate Rate Program. A 10% tuition reduction is applied when the company, or the student, pays tuition at the time of registration. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What are the admission requirements? What will it cost? No entrance exams or SAT scores are required for admission. Students must be at least 23 years of age and have graduated from high school with a 2.0 GPA, or completed the GED. Transfer students must have at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA in previous college course work. Tuition rates are published on our website at www.vwc.edu/asp. There is no out-of-state tuition fee. EMPLOYER TUITION DEFERRAL Many local employers reimburse all or part of their employees educational expenses. If your employer provides you with tuition assistance, payment for the reimbursable amount of tuition is deferred until the semester ends. How do I sign up for classes? How do I learn the ropes? Your adviser will assist you in planning your educational program and selecting your courses each semester. Most ASP students take one or two courses each semester, but we encourage you to set the pace that is right for you.
