ITB has established itself as a reputable institution at both national and international levels. Coupled with the ever-increasing staff with high academic and research capabilities, it is now catering for the production of professionals at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Suitable applicants are now invited for enrolment into our Graduate by Research programmes leading to Masters and Doctoral graduate degrees.
1 Types of Graduate Research Degree Currently the following types of graduate degree by research are available: 1. Masters by Research degree i. Full-time study Two years supervised study and one year writing-up period. OR ii. Part-time study Four years supervised study and one year writing-up period. 2. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree i. Full-time study Three years supervised study and one year writing-up period. OR ii. Part-time study Six years supervised study and one year writing-up period.
2 Minimum admission requirements For admission into the graduate research degrees, candidates must satisfy the following minimum admission requirements: 1. Masters by Research degree i. A lower second-class honours Bachelor degree, or equivalent, recognised by the Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council. AND ii. At least a credit or equivalent in English Language GCE O-level or an IELTS overall score of 6.5 or its equivalent. The English Language requirements may be waived where qualifying studies in Higher Education were in the medium of English Language. Where candidates completed their higher education more than 2 years prior to their current application they will need to show that they have continued to study or work in the medium of English 2. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree i. A graduate Masters degree recognised by the Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council. OR ii. A second-class honours Bachelor degree, or equivalent, recognised by the Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council. AND iii. At least a credit or equivalent in English Language GCE O-level or an IELTS overall score of 6.5 or its equivalent. The English Language requirements may be waived where qualifying studies in Higher Education were in the medium of English Language. Where candidates completed their higher education more than 2 years prior to their current application they will need to show that they have continued to study or work in the medium of English. Note that: i. Additional admission requirements set out by the programme area, which would normally include having the required qualification in a relevant area, the submission of a satisfactory research proposal and passing an interview. ii. A candidate will only be offered a place if the faculty is able to provide adequate supervision and facilities in the candidate s proposed area of research.
3 Tuition Fees The following table provides the tuition fees for research degrees at ITB for 2015: Masters by Research : B$ 4,000.00 per programme PhD : B$ 12,000.00 per programme Funding and Scholarships The following funding opportunities for research programmes may be available. 1. Bruneian Students Please contact the Scholarship Department at the Ministry of Education for prospective scholarships available to study at ITB. You may also find studentship opportunities funded through external research grants, which are informed through our website at www.itb.edu. bn when available. 2. International Students Brunei Government scholarships are also available for study at the university. In the past, these scholarships have been awarded to students within international organizations such as ISESCO, the Commonwealth, and ASEAN. 4 Prospective research areas by research thrusts/clusters You may be able to identify prospective research area and supervisor from the research thrusts and clusters of ITB. The Research Thrusts have been formed utilising on the existing strengths of both ITB and the current Research Clusters. The Research Thrusts provide the opportunity for cross-disciplinary Research, Development & Innovation across the Research Clusters of ITB and subsequently break down the walls of traditional disciplinary-based research and enhance multi-disciplinary approach research. This improves the opportunities to compete for larger grants from external research funding bodies and to publish in top-tier publications. The Research Thrusts provide the opportunity and platform to undertake R&D and find solutions from the combined perspectives of engineers, economists, business and ICT specialists. There are currently 3 Research Thrusts: Oil & Gas, Water and Green Technology. 5 Prospective research area by faculty, research centre or discipline The prospective research areas by faculty, research centre or discipline include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Faculty of Engineering Civil Engineering: Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Materials, Water & Environmental Engineering and Construction Management. Electrical & Electronic Engineering: Power Engineering, Communication Engineering, Renewable/ Sustainable Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotic and UAV Monitoring and Navigation, Mathematical Modelling, Dynamics, Control, Speech Perception, and Wireless Networks. Mechanical Engineering: Engineering Design, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Thermo-fluid Engineering, Renewable Energy and Applied Mechanics. Petroleum & Chemical Engineering: Rheology of Complex Materials. 2. School of Business Banking & Finance, Economics & Related Issues, Human Resource Management & Development and Business Information System. Islamic finance, Corporate governance, Accounting and Auditing, Decision Support System, Consumer Behaviour, Brand Personality, Brand Attitude, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Management Information Systems, Business Intelligence using SAP, Big Data Analysis and Knowledge Management. 3. School of Computing and Informatics Computing & Information Systems, Electronic Commerce, Electronic Learning, Programming, Multimedia, Network and Security. 4. Centre for Transport Research (CfTR) Safety of Road Infrastructure, Analysis of Road Traffic Accident Data and Behavioural Study of Road Users.
6 Applying 1. Check that you have met the minimum admission requirements of the university and the programme area that you intend to register with. 2. Identify research opportunities with ITB academics who have expertise or recent research work that match your interest area. You can browse the area of expertise and recent work of academics from the individual programme area websites, or browse the information provided at the website of ITB research thrusts and clusters. 3. Make an informal enquiry with the academics whom you are interested to work with. This step is useful to further define your area of interest, identify prospective supervisor, and prepare a research proposal. Submit a formal application using the ITB Graduate Studies Application Form including a research proposal. Note that whilst you can submit your application form at any time of the year, there are only two intakes of graduate research students annually either in January or August. The deadline for application to join the January intake is normally in the month of September, while the deadline for application to join the August intake is normally in the month of April.
