Property Management Certificate This part-time program delivers a comprehensive body of knowledge and skills for success in the property management profession. The certificate includes six required courses. The residential and commercial property management courses examine legal, operating, and management topics in regard to residential rental buildings, residential strata buildings, and commercial properties including office, retail, and shopping centre developments. The balance of the program develops essential skills in communications, negotiation, dispute resolution, financial statement review, and building operations. The program curriculum is designed to give students a thorough understanding of the foundations of professional property management. Certificate Completion Requirements To earn the Property Management Certificate, students must complete six certificate courses within a three-year period with a minimum grade of C (60%) in each course. Rental Management Licensing Graduates of the Property Management Certificate program may write the Rental Property Management License Exam at Sauder School of Business after completing the following courses and obtaining permission from RE Council of BC: PROP 1004 Real Estate Law PROP 1005 Real Estate Appraisal PROP 1024 Real Estate Mathematics PROP 1020 Real Estate Investment Analysis Note: A property management license is only required if the property manager is employed by a property management brokerage (agency) to directly manage client-owned properties under a fee management agreement. Licensing is not required if you are managing property owned by your employer or owned by you. Real Property Analyst Certificate Graduates of the Property Management Certificate will receive the Real Property Analyst Certificate upon completion of the above four courses. Social Housing Management Certificate This part-time program was developed through a partnership between Langara College and the British Columbia Non-Profit Housing Association. It is designed for staff, managers, and volunteers engaged in social housing operations or development. The certificate program includes five required courses. Professional Building Manager Certificate This part-time program covers supervisory and management skills specifically related to building operations. The program content is applicable to residential and commercial buildings, as well as hospitality and health facilities. The core courses develop essential knowledge and skills in building management, building operating systems, writing and communications, tenant relations, and creating productive relationships with staff, trades, and other professionals on the property management team. The elective courses allow students to tailor the program to suit their individual learning objectives and career plans. To earn the certificate, students complete four core courses and three elective courses. Real Property Analyst Certificate The Real Property Analyst Certificate provides a strong academic foundation in real estate investment analysis, combined with practical knowledge of the operating aspects of income-producing real estate. All courses are offered on a part-time schedule. The core courses examine the principles and techniques of real estate valuation, mathematics, investment analysis, and law. The elective courses offer students some latitude to develop their knowledge in different areas of related expertise, such as property management, non-profit housing management, residential construction, building operating systems, and the art of negotiation. Students may enroll in any individual course, subject to a prerequisite in some cases. To earn the certificate, students complete a total of eight courses. Completion of the appraisal specialization in the UBC Diploma in Urban Land Economics (DULE) program fulfills the education requirement. The entire UBC DULE program consists of eleven courses. All five Langara courses listed above may be applied toward the UBC DULE (appraisal specialization). Note: There is no degree requirement for the RI (Appraisal) designation. PROP1043 Advanced Strata Management This applied course is designed for working strata managers. You will develop handson knowledge and skills for problem solving. You will also acquire a deeper understanding of how to handle everyday challenges pertaining to statutory compliance, annual general meetings, council meetings, mixed-use stratas, budget preparation, financial reserves, building maintenance, insurance claims, and time management. This course is eligible for REP elective course credit. Prerequisite: A current strata management license. (30 hours) $499 PROP1073 Building Design and Construction Course provides a concise overview of construction materials and methods for commercial and residential buildings, including high-rise towers. Emphasis is placed on key terminology and the economics of construction projects. Topics include: planning and design, site preparation, foundations, superstructure, envelope systems, mechanical systems, and interior finishes. There is also brief treatment of construction supervision, quality control, sustainability issues, and post-construction deficiencies. Non-credit (18 hours) $340 14
PROP1044 Building Operations Management This course examines building operations from a management perspective. You will learn how buildings operate, how to develop a building maintenance plan, how to improve safety and efficiency, and how to solve maintenance problems. Topics include: planning and risk management, best practices, budgeting, tendering and purchasing, service contracts, capital upgrades, and project supervision. Course content applies to residential and commercial properties as well as institutional facilities. This is a required course in the Professional Building Manager Certificate program. (36 hours) $560 PROP 1060 Building Systems and Analysis This course provides a thorough examination of building systems and equipment, and how to analyze and rectify problems in building systems. Topics include: building structure and envelope, mechanical systems and HVAC, maintenance and inspection schedules, report research, building audits, energy efficiency, and problem-solving techniques. Course content applies to residential and commercial properties as well as institutional facilities. This is a required course in the Professional Building Manager Certificate program. (36 hours) $510 GBSC1004 Business Communications This course introduces the fundamentals of interpersonal and group interaction including written, verbal, and non-verbal communication. The class will examine options in presentation preparation and delivery techniques, awareness of tone, consideration of audience, and selection of indirect and direct message organization. This is a required course in the Property Management Certificate program, the Social Housing Management Certificate program, and the Professional Building Manager Certificate program. (36 hours) $405 PROP1035 Buying Income Property Ideal for the novice investor, this course offers practical information on the selection and management of income-producing real estate. Examples include multi-unit rental houses and apartment buildings. Students will examine sample property investments on the basis of estimated net income, market value growth, deferred maintenance, routine maintenance, tenancy agreements, and tenant relations. A strong emphasis is placed on personal financial objectives. Non-credit (9 hours) $175 PROP1061 Commercial Lease Analysis This concise course examines commercial tenancies and commercial leases in British Columbia.
