The CPA certification program combines the best elements of business while providing experience that puts you in demand and keeps you there throughout your career. It is the preeminent internationally recognized Canadian business and accounting credential that best protects and serves the public interest. The CPA certification program meets or exceeds all standards set out by the International Federation of Accountants. TAKE THESE 5 STEPS TO EARN YOUR CPA: Obtain a recognized undergraduate degree Become a PREP student or PEP candidate in the CPA certification program Complete the Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) 4 5 Complete the Practical Experience Requirements (PER) Pass the Common Final Examination (CFE) READY TO TURN PRO?
ACADEMIC PREREQUISITES JOIN THE PROS The only prerequisite for the CPA certification program is a Canadian undergraduate degree or recognized equivalent. To be eligible for the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP), you will also require specific subject area coverage. This prerequisite coverage can be earned through post-secondary education, the CPA Prerequisite Education Program (CPA PREP), or a combination of both. CPA Prerequisite Education Program CPA PREP is an intensive education program aimed at those who have an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than accounting. CPA PREP allows you to obtain some or all of the prerequisite courses required for direct admission into CPA PEP. CPA PREP maximizes flexibility by being delivered on a part-time basis through a combination of online learning and self-study. As CPA PREP is a modularized program, students will only complete the modules they require. Based on your educational history, you may receive credit for specific modules. Applicants with international post-secondary education will also need their degree assessed. Third-party degree assessment agencies, such as International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or World Education Services (WES), will ensure equivalency with the Canadian undergraduate degree requirement. All modules end with an in-person final examination covering course material. Quizzes and projects are also elements of most CPA PREP modules. Each module will be offered at least twice per year and the entirety of CPA PREP can be completed within two years if taken in sequence Introductory Financial Accounting Module Next Offering Price* Introductory Management Accounting Economics (Micro and Macro) Statistics Intermediate Financial Reporting I Intermediate Financial Reporting II Advanced Financial Reporting Self-study, non-core modules. Students are provided with all necessary study materials after registration. Exams are offered five times each year. Upcoming Exam Dates: December 2015; March 2016 January 2016 October 2015 January 2016 PREP students have an annual student fee of $550 + GST. Fees and schedule are subject to change. Visit go.cpamb.ca for additional dates and details. *Prices indicated are for self-study version of modules. $650 + GST $650 + GST $650 + GST Corporate Finance October 2015 $650 + GST Audit and Assurance January 2016 $650 + GST Taxation March 2016 $650 + GST Intermediate Management Accounting October 2015 $650 + GST Performance Management January 2016 $650 + GST Business Law Information Technology Self-study, non-core modules. Upcoming Exam Dates: December 2015; March 2016 Post-Secondary Students Prerequisite requirements for CPA PEP can be met through approved courses at recognized post-secondary institutions in Manitoba. You can view a list of CPA approved post-secondary courses at go.cpamb.ca/courselistings. CPA Manitoba Joint Venture is continuing to work with universities and colleges in Manitoba to update post-secondary prerequisite requirements. We will update this listing as they become available at each institution. Legacy Paths Within the CPA program, current students at post-secondary institutions in Manitoba can still qualify for direct entry into CPA PEP by fulfilling one of CA, CGA or CMA s program prerequisites along with taking the free self-study Module Zero program once they enter CPA PEP. This allowance is only in effect until June See FAQs for more information on Module Zero.
CPA PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAM Delivered on a part-time basis, CPA PEP combines online learning, self-study, classroom sessions, and teamwork while developing the competencies expected of Canada s preeminent business professionals. To qualify for CPA PEP, students must hold a 120 credit hour undergraduate degree with specific subject area coverage. CPA PEP candidates combine their learning with practical experience as they are employed in relevant accounting or finance positions. Students are encouraged to complete education and practical experience requirements concurrently. This will allow you to earn a living while developing skills in both enabling and technical competencies. CPA PEP is built on: Five Enabling Competencies Professional & Ethical Behavior Problem-Solving & Decision-Making Communication Self-Management Teamwork & Leadership Six Technical Competencies Financial Reporting Strategy & Governance Audit & Assurance Management Accounting Finance Taxation Candidates complete six modules as part of CPA PEP: Two core modules that focus on development in management and financial accounting competencies and the integration of the six core technical areas. Two elective modules that allow candidates to develop depth in specialized areas of career interest. A capstone integrative module that focuses on the development of enabling competencies and the integration of technical competencies. A capstone examination preparation module which conditions candidates for the multi-day Common Final Examination. Elective Modules Candidates choose two modules from the four electives: Assurance Performance Management Tax Finance MEET REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION INTO CPA PEP DEGREE WITHOUT SUBJECT AREA COVERAGE CPA PREP RECOGNIZED POST-SECONDARY COURSES OR PROGRAMS WITH SUBJECT AREA COVERAGE RELEVANT PRACTICAL WORK EXPERIENCE
JOIN THE PROS Evaluation Each module of CPA PEP includes a final evaluation that must be successfully completed before moving on to the next module. The program culminates in the multi-day Common Final Examination. Candidates must demonstrate breadth in all six technical competency areas, and depth in two technical competency areas: Financial Reporting or Management Accounting, plus One from other technical competency areas Practical Experience Requirements The CPA Practical Experience Requirements (PER) are a critical component of the CPA certification program. All CPA candidates must complete relevant and progressive practical experience that is approved by the CPA profession and recorded in the online Practical Experience Reporting Tool (PERT). The minimum PER duration of 30 months can be met through current experience alone, or a combination of prior experience (up to a maximum of 12 months) and current experience. There are two routes to obtain your PER: The pre-approved route (PPR) in which future CPAs gain relevant experience in training positions pre-approved by the profession. The experience verification route (EVR) in which future CPAs demonstrate relevant experience with an employer of choice. Future CPAs can gain experience through either route, or a combination of both. Visit CPAcanada.ca/practicalexperience for more information about CPA PER. Pursuing Public Accounting? Candidates pursuing a career in public accounting have specific considerations for certification in the CPA program: They must take the Assurance and Tax elective modules. On the Common Final Examination, they must show depth in Financial Reporting and Assurance. They must complete practical experience requirements specific to public accounting. COMPLETE CPA PEP OVER APPROXIMATELY 30 MONTHS COMMON FINAL EXAMINATION CPA DESIGNATION CORE 1 CORE 2 ELECTIVE 1 ELECTIVE 2 CAPSTONE 1 CAPSTONE 2 RELEVANT PRACTICAL WORK EXPERIENCE
FAQs What is Module Zero? Module Zero is designed for those who have met the entrance requirements for CPA PEP, but must now add to their knowledge before registering for Core Module 1 in CPA PEP. Module Zero is also beneficial where exemptions have been granted for post-secondary courses and there are gaps in the coverage. These additions are necessary because the requirements for CPA PEP are different than those of the legacy accounting designations and you may require additional subject knowledge. How does Module Zero work? Free to access the material, you must be registered as a CPA PEP candidate. Flexible you only complete the topics you require for gaps in knowledge. Online you complete the material at your own pace within a set time frame before beginning the first CPA PEP module. Self-assessed when you complete a topic, you answer review questions to make sure you understand the material. There are no assignments or exams. For more information on Module Zero, contact the CPA Western School of Business at I earned my degree internationally. Am I eligible for the CPA certification program? If you are internationally educated, you may be eligible for the CPA certification program if your degree is assessed by a third-party degree assessment agency and verified as equivalent to a Canadian undergraduate university degree. You may also qualify for transfer credit in CPA PREP. I have a 3-year Canadian undergraduate degree. Am I eligible for the CPA certification program? Yes. CPA PREP eligibility requires a 3-year or 90 credit hour degree for entry, whereas CPA PEP requires an undergraduate degree with 120 credit hours and specific subject area coverage. Applicants with a 3-year degree may be able to complete the credit hour requirement through CPA PREP courses, additional post-secondary courses, or a combination of both. I have a degree that s not in accounting do I have to go back to university? Not necessarily. If you have an undergraduate degree but lack the required subject area coverage for CPA, you can meet the prerequisite coverage through CPA PREP. This modularized program will allow you to focus on the specific subject area coverage you require for CPA PEP, and obtain it at an accelerated pace. Where can I work with my CPA? The CPA program is designed to meet and exceed the needs of both the public and private sector. Professional accountants with the CPA designation will be highly sought after by employers across Canada and around the world in industry, public practice and government organizations. Do I have to practice public accounting? No CPA candidates can choose to work in their desired field. CPA candidates interested in practicing public accounting will follow a specific path that emphasizes the fundamental elements of public accounting and will have different requirements for qualifying practical experience.
