MEDICAID MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES SPECIALTY SERVICES WAIVER

If you have mild or moderate mental health needs such as depression or anxiety, you will receive medically necessary mental health services from your health plan. If you have mild or moderate mental health needs such as depression or anxiety and you are not enrolled in a health plan, you may receive mental health services from an enrolled provider in the Michigan Medicaid program. If you have a developmental disability, mental illness, serious emotional disturbance or substance use disorder you will receive medically necessary specialty mental health and substance abuse services through the prepaid inpatient mental health plan for your area. Medically necessary is a term used to describe one of the criteria that must be met in order for a beneficiary to receive Medicaid services. The specific specialty service is expected to help the beneficiary with a mental health, developmental disability or substance use condition. Some services assess needs and some services help maintain or improve functioning. 1

Medically necessary services include: Mental Health Assertive Community Treatment Program (ACT) Psychiatric Evaluation Psychological Testing Behavior Management Review Child Therapy Clubhouse Psychosocial Rehabilitation Programs Crisis Interventions Crisis Residential Services Family Therapy Home-based Services Individual/Group Therapy In-patient Psychiatric Hospitalization Intensive Crisis Stabilization Services Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Mental Retardation (ICF/MR) Medication Administration Medication Review Nursing Facility Mental Health Monitoring Occupational Therapy Outpatient Partial Hospitalization Services Personal Care in Licensed Specialized Residential Settings Physical Therapy, Speech, Hearing & Language Targeted Case Management Transportation Treatment Planning Assistive Technology Community Living Supports Enhanced Pharmacy Environmental Modifications Family Support & Training Fiscal Intermediary Services Housing Assistance Peer-Delivered or Peer-Operated Support Services Peer Support Specialist Prevention-Direct Service Models Respite Care Services Skill Building Assistance Support & Service Coordination Supported/Integrated Employment Services Wrap-Around Substance Abuse Access Assessment and Referral Services Outpatient Treatment Intensive Outpatient Treatment Methadone as an adjunct to therapy Sub-Acute Detoxification Residential Treatment Habilitation Supports Waiver Program If you have a developmental disability and meet the requirements for services in an Intermediate Care Facility for Mental Retardation (ICF/MR) you may request enrollment in the Habilitation Supports Waiver (HSW) Program. This program has a limited enrollment.
