I am anxious for the beautiful spring weather, green trees and flowers blooming and lots of birds hanging out at my feeders while my family and I eat on the deck. I m also excited to see my outstanding senior in workbased learning cross the stage at our annual awards breakfast next month. This event is always a time of reflection about the wonderful experiences all of my WBL students have had throughout the school year that have prepared them for their future careers. The work that all of you do is so important, and I thank you for the time and dedication that you give to your students. MCPA has been busy delivering valuable information about placing students in a work environment and getting the word out about our great organization. In February, I had the privilege of presenting on behalf of our organization at the Michigan Career Education Conference, along with Debbie Lynch our President- Elect and Diana Bailey our MDE Liaison. The session was well received and we were able to connect with other WBL Coordinators while attending the conference. I am happy to say that at the wrap-up meeting in March, our session was rated 2 nd in the top twenty sessions. Way to go team! In March, I also had the privilege of presenting on behalf of our organization at the Michigan Transition Services Association Annual Spring Conference. The room was filled with 70+ people filling all the seats and standing in the back. They were eager to hear the information and had many questions for me. What a great experience this conference was. I was a first timer and had the opportunity to attend several sessions while I was there. I found them to be very valuable and even connected with a presenter who will be delivering a session at our MCPA Summer Conference. I was also able to attend their awards dinner and see all of the outstanding things that MTSA members are doing. Thank you to the MTSA board members who welcomed me and showed me the ropes. Thank you also to the MTSA members who also have membership in MCPA. What a great partnership this is for our work-based learning students. Speaking of our summer conference don t forget to check out the article in this 1

Your summer conference planning committee has been working hard to bring you a conference filled with valuable information and an opportunity to network with other coordinators from around the state. I hope to see all of you in Lansing in June. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President this year. Thank you to the MCPA Executive Board for the extra time they dedicate to this organization. Thank you to all of you, the MCPA membership, for the valuable work that you do every day to prepare students for their futures. I am honored to work beside such an amazing group of people who continue to wear many hats each day and work hard for our students amongst the many challenges that we face. Have a wonderful rest of the school year. MCPA Annual Summer Conference -- June 19 & 20, 2013 The James B. Henry Center for Executive Development in Lansing, MI MCPA, with the support of the Michigan Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education, is offering our Annual Summer Work- Based Learning Conference. Our 2013 Summer Conference registration link is now available on our MCPA website at We hope that all of you will consider attending this valuable conference. We have filled the agenda with many topics suggested by our membership. It will be a great two days of learning and networking for anyone involved in work-based learning experiences for students. We are really excited about the new location at The James B. Henry Center in Lansing. It is a great place to host a conference with amazing facilities and food. Not to mention all the fun things to do in the Lansing area while you are there. You can find links on our website with more information. A tentative agenda is also included in this newsletter. The summer conference allows you time to network with other coordinators and share best practices, something the October workshop does not have time to offer. The conference is essential for educators, business and industry, and other partners engaged in work-based learning programs that are targeted toward high school age students. SCHECH s (formerly SBCEU s) may be available to those who attend the entire workshop. You will be required to sign in and out and complete the documentation needed at the end of the conference to receive the SCHECH s. We are offering, for the first time, a pre-conference session on utilizing Moodle 2
3 in a work-based learning course. Online classrooms provide a location for your class to meet even when you cannot meet face-to-face. Work-based learners spend a lot of time outside the classroom in their work/learning environment. Moodle provides a place to hold discussions, collect assignments, distribute information, and provide assessments 24/7. Bring your Wi-Fi compatible laptop to this hands-on workshop. There will be other work-based Coordinators who use an online classroom there to help you. Come hear about their Moodle experiences and learn about setting up your own classroom. You can find additional details on our registration link. Accommodations are available at the adjoining Candlewood Suites. To contact the hotel for reservations, please call (517) The special conference rate for the conference is $91.00 for a studio suite or $ for a 1-bedroom suite. To receive the special conference rate, you must register prior to May 21st. There is a list of other hotel options in the area on our website also. We hope to see everyone on June 19 and 20. If you have further questions about the conference, please contact MCPA President Lisa Bartell at lbartell@kresa.org or (269) State News Submitted by Diana Bailey, Program and Placement Specialist Michigan Department of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education Hello from Lansing where the 2013 MCPA Summer Conference will be held. The Henry Center will be a great place to have the conference this year. It is a wonderful location to hold sessions, network and build upon your work-based learning programs. An added bonus is that the Lansing area is filled with wonderful activities and points of interest for you and/or your family. I know first-hand how hard your President and President-Elect have worked to put together this conference and know you will reap great rewards if you make the commitment to attend. During the summer conference, I will have an opportunity to share updates that have been made to the Work-Based Learning Guide for Risk Management over the past year that will include a new School Coordinator Handbook. Below is a link to Governor Snyder s website on Michigan jobs and other resources. You may want to use this information to help students make wise decisions. Thank you for your hard work and best wishes as you wrap up your school year. I hope to see all of you in June! 3
4 2013 Officer Candidates This year we have several candidates for four open positions on the Executive Board. Below you will find a bio for each candidate. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with them before the Summer Conference in June and be sure to meet them at the conference. President Elect Rachel Hard Candidate for President-Elect I have worked at the Branch Area Careers Center for 25 years. At the BACC, I have taught Business Services Technology, Computer Networking Technology and Information Technology. I have been in the role of Placement Coordinator for the past 5 years. I have been a member of MCPA for 5 years and spent the last year as Regional Representative for SWMCA. I am also a member of Michigan Business Educators Association (MBEA). Previously, I was a BPA Advisor for 20 years and still enjoy helping with youth clubs at the BACC. I want to serve as your President-Elect because I want to serve MCPA. I know how important work based learning is for CTE students and the difference it makes in student s lives. I believe our organization plays an important role in Michigan CTE and I would like to be part of that team that looks to the future. Treasurer Lori Johnson Candidate for Treasurer I am currently serving as the Owosso High School Career & Technical Education Coordinator, Work-Based Learning Coordinator, and Career & Technical Education Department Chair. In my current WBL Coordinator position, I oversee Co-operative Education and Office Aide training opportunities. Prior to being a full-time coordinator, I taught Business courses at Owosso High School and Middle School where I have been employed for the past 14 years. 4
5 I have been a member of MCPA for many years and have served as an MMCA Regional Representative and have participated in MCPA and Virtual Enterprise International (VEI) presentations at the Michigan Career Education Conference. In addition, I am a member the Michigan Business Education Association (MBEA) and have been a Business Professionals of America (BPA) advisor for 10 years. Since November, I have been serving as the interim Treasurer for MCPA and would welcome the opportunity to continue serving in this position. I believe that work-based learning activities/placements give students the ability to connect with real-world experiences, and I feel fortunate to be a part of MCPA and appreciate the support this organization provides to students and coordinators. VP Membership (2 candidates) Nicole Lord Candidate for VP of Membership I am currently the Academic Advisor/Career Development Facilitator, CTE Director, and Work- Based Learning Coordinator for Flushing High School. Previous to my position as Academic Advisor/Career Development Facilitator and CTE Director, I taught CTE courses in the BMMT program areas. I have been a Work-Based Learning Coordinator for eight years. I operate a program that consists of CTE Work-Based Learning students out of the district, in-district unpaid learners, out of the district unpaid learners, and Capstone students. I have also enacted an online Capstone course. I have had the opportunity to be on the MCPA board as the Regional Representative for MMCA Region for the past several years. This also had led me to being the countywide representative/contact for Work-Based Learning. I have presented at the MPCA Conference. I have also been on various committees of the MCPA Board. I truly believe in the opportunities afforded to students through the Work-Based Learning experiences and I am fortunate to work in this capacity. I am excited about the possibility of a new role on the MCPA board where I can help continue the mission and work of MCPA! 5
6 Richard P. Moll Candidate for VP of Membership As a retired educator, let me provide you with a little background information for you to get to know me. I served the community of Greenville, MI as an educator for 35 years at Greenville High School. My teaching career began as an architectural & engineering design instructor. This position lasted for 18 years. The next four years of my career were served as the district s Technology Coordinator. During this period, I served on the renovation team and over saw a complete technology installation and renovation project. The next 13 years were probably the most exciting and rewarding years of my career. In those years, I served the district as the full-time Career Prep Coordinator. During the 13 years in this role, I had the opportunity to work with some wonderful students as they expanded their skills working in area businesses. Being a Class B school, with two CTE programs, placing students sometimes posed some challenges. However, having the district s support I was able to consistently manage student placements per semester, with as many as 500 career shadows per year. To manage these numbers, I created a spreadsheet & word processing system that allowed me to create, print, and save digital documents. The skills learned here could easily be utilized in maintaining membership records. My experience with MCPA span the 13 years I was a Career Prep Coordinator. During those years I was a member of the KOMAC (Kent Muskegon Ottawa Area Coordinators) region of MCPA and I served as chairperson of that region for two years. I also served as President of MCPA for two different terms. One of these was after my retirement from education. My civic involvement has included nine years as a council member, with two of those years as Mayor. I am also serving as the Community Fundraising Chairperson of the Five Star Region of Boy Scouts of America. This position requires the maintaining of contributions for five counties in W. Michigan. My vision for MCPA is to provide a welcoming atmosphere for all individuals who are involved with career placements of students of all areas and abilities. This atmosphere must include all the tools, documents, and skills necessary to provide success along with accurate documentation of records. I would like to ask for your support as I feel that I am more than qualified, but also ask that you research the candidates and select the candidate that can best serve the organization. 6
7 VP of Publications & Historian Ranesa Reese Candidate for VP of Publications & Historian A National Board Certified Teacher in Career and Technical Education with over 14 years experience as a secondary Business Teacher. She teaches Business Management Operation and Web Design at Cass Technical High School, a nationally recognized School of Excellence, in Detroit Public Schools. She is also the Work-Based Learning Coordinator. Ranesa s passion for Career and Technical Education/Work-Based Learning stems from her own experience as a business student at a career and technical center. There she developed valuable business, technical, interpersonal, and networking skills and mastered the ability to successfully transfer those skills via practical workplace application. Therefore, she can identify with the majority of her students. She also serves as an advisor/coordinator for Business Professionals of America (BPA). BPA is a Career Technical Student Organization that sponsors work place skills based competency testing in over 72 business, marketing, financial, presentation and technical events. She has coached numerous regional, state and national winners in a variety of competitions. Ranesa spends many of her summers researching and revising curriculum to make sure students receive the necessary training that would provide them with the rigor and relevance necessary for real-world skills. In addition, she also participated in several externships during summers working in the private sector so she could learn and include updated workplace practices, new technologies and required skills sets in her curriculum. She became a business teacher because of her inherent need to make a difference. She is always embracing personal growth experiences, so she immediately joined the Michigan Career Placement Association (MCPA) after becoming a work based learning coordinator. She has learned a tremendous amount from collaborating with other members of MCPA. Serving as your VP Publications/Historian would be an honor. 7
