APRIL 20, 2015 15 Cheapest/ Expensive States for Long-Term Care Costs: 2015 Genworth study breaks down costs for adult day care, home-based help and nursing homes a month even in the cheapest states. A private nursing home room costs more than $5,000 The old saw about what goes up must come down obviously wasn t coined by someone thinking about the costs of long-term care. According to Genworth s 12th annual study on the cost of LTC, costs are still on the rise, which is undoubtedly no surprise to anyone who s had to deal with it, either personally or on behalf of a client. However, care at home is still cheaper than in any kind of facility, which is borne out by the latest study. Those who just need a little help, such as that provided by a homemaker or home health aide, will find that the national median hourly rate for such care is just $20 per hour, and that rate has grown far more slowly over the past five years than the costs for any facility-provided care. The cost for the care of a homemaker has seen a 2.63% increase during 2014, but the five-year annual growth of a homemaker s cost has just been 1.61%. For home health aides, the cost rose 1.27% during 2014, with a fiveyear annual growth of only 1.03%. In contrast, Genworth found that the cost of an assisted living facility has experienced a five-year annual growth of 2.48%, while over the past five years the annual cost for a private room in a nursing home has risen 3.95%. The cost of care can be pretty scary, particularly if one has no coverage for it Medicare does not cover LTC costs, although many people believe it does, and Medicaid only kicks in when one s assets have already been depleted.

Genworth measured average yearly costs of adult day care, licensed home care, assisted living and nursing home private rooms. Keep reading for the 15 cheapest states for long-term care, ranked by average annual cost across categories: 15. MAY 7, 2014 Top 15 Most Expensive States for Long-Term Care: 2014 A range of LTC services was used for Genworth s 11th annual study to rank the states LTC providers from 440 regions across the country. The data span more than 14,800 If you haven t noticed the rising cost of health care, you must have been living in a cave. The cost of long-term care is no different, and as the nearly 80 million baby boomers age, how to pay for medical care occupies an ever-larger part of their retirement calculations. Looking at Genworth Financial s annual study on the cost of LTC provides insights on how much the cost varies from state to state. Since at least 70% of the over-65 population are expected to need LTC at some time in their lives, considering where to retire could play a large part in how affordable that care might be when the time comes. For the 11th year, Genworth s Cost of Care Survey, conducted by CareScout, uses data that span more than 14,800 LTC providers from 440 regions across the country, covering all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Also included are potential cost growth rates, as well as a look at how expenses in each category have risen over the past 5 years. According to Tom McInerney, Genworth president and CEO, most Americans lack sufficient retirement savings to pay for such care, either because of a lack of conventional pension plans or too little socked away in 401(k)s. For the vast majority of Americans, said McInerney, LTC costs are not covered by Medicare and Medicaid provides coverage only after lifelong savings have been nearly exhausted. Given these factors, private LTC

insurance remains one of the most effective ways for Americans to prepare for this potentially significant expense later in life. The categories included in the Top 15 Most Expensive States for LTC, are adult day care, licensed home care, assisted living and nursing home private rooms. 15.
