Why m-learning?
Accessibility Categories of m-learning benefits access to learning opportunities, content, experts/ mentors, other learners Immediacy on-demand learning, real-time communication and data sharing, situated or contextualized learning Personalization bite-size learning on familiar devices; promotes active learning and a more personalized experience Intelligence advanced features make learning richer through location-aware features, data capture, multimedia
M-learning: How? Old wine in new bottles? M-learning (mobile learning) describes a medium, not a pedagogy
Why mlearning for development? just the right content, on just the right device, for just the right person, at just the right time. - Wayne Hodgins, "The Future of Learning Objects," presentation at the Learning Objects Forum, Menlo Park, California, September 3, 2002. and just the right cost.
m-learning for development Accessibility: to devices and from devices to content Ease of use, rapid deployment and uptake Teacher training crisis can be mediated by forms of open and distance learning. M-learning can support this. Distance learning may be more efficient in many ways than traditional forms because of the situated nature of learning. How does our framework help design content? Microlearning Multimedia learning Mastery of learning Motivation for learning
M-learning content development Motivated learning Engaging Accessible on demand Game-based learning Microlearning Learning in bite-size pieces Delivered at strategic times (i.e., coaching) Monitoring of learning (mastery) Engaging different Spot checking learning learning ng styles Data analytics Combining audio, Drill and practice video, text and action Apps and games Multi-media learning
[CS1]Tangerine:Class should be mentioned here as well, in addition to below; ; and Tangerine:Class, software to facilitate curriculum based measureme RTI International PRIMR research design
M-learning content development PRIMR: Multimedia teachers guide Virtual coach Remote practice Audio / video guidelines to ensure fidelity Motivated learning The teachers were really, really, really excited. Here are these bulky lesson plans on a small instrument, and not just that but also in terms of if I want to teach this word in word blending, for example, how do I blend it? Sometimes when you script it, it may seem obvious that someone will just read it and understand what they are to do. With the enhancement if the teacher gets to this point and the need to teach a specific word or sound, with the multimedia lesson plan they just need to touch the button and they Monitoring get hear the sound and they can differentiate if it is the sound of learning they are hearing or the name of the letter. So that is also (mastery) a great tool. the children can listen to this sound as it should be then they get to learn the correct sound. Such a great enhancement. A big plus for this project. Microlearning Multi-media learning
Multimedia teachers guide Audio/visual materials strategically placed throughout the teachers guide Letter sounds Images of new vocabulary Audio word-building grids Model teaching videos read-aloud stories
Papaya Listen, blend, learn. They are really finding it interesting in terms of getting confidence in what to tell the users They y can actually see the letters in place of the flashcards, and in cases where they are not sure of the sounds they are organizing the learners in small groups and have them listen to the sounds. This is a very big addition.! - Kenyan user RTI International is a trade name of Research Triangle Institute. www.rti.org
Papaya Multimedia flashcards Verify letter sounds Practice recording Tactile word-building Whole group, small group, individual practice
M-learning content development PRIMR: TangerineClass Motivated learning Monitoring of learning (mastery) Classroom based assessment made easy Curriculum aligned Automatic analysis and guidance for teacher Microlearning What Tangerine:Class is bringing : the teacher can get instant results in terms of how the children are mastering the different skills and this helps the teacher monitor individual learners and also to know which learners are struggling and how to support them. The beauty of the results is that they explicitly explain the next steps. The teacher doesnt have to struggle thinking what is the best action to take. Not only tells them more practice but tells them use the word lists or the sounds, which is really really detailed and specific so that the teacher has an action point and they know what they Multi-media can do to remedy what the children are struggling with and this learning is very importantit will go a long way in motivating the teachers because they are able to track how their children are progressing and they are able to use the feedback to see what actions they can take so the progress goes on as expected. It is a great invention.
Tangerine TM Easier assessment, better data, faster results. If you can have data so quickly and be able to access it so fast, that is really good. It takes so much time to analyze data and get it into consumable form this is a great invention! - Kenyan user RTI International is a trade name of Research Triangle Institute. www.rti.org
What is Tangerine TM? Data collection software designed for mobile computers for recording students responses in oral early grade reading (EGRA) and mathematics (EGMA) assessments to capture interview responses from students, teachers, and principals on home and school context Uses cutting-edge open source technologies including CouchDB and HTML5 Compatible across a wide range of mobile devices, languages and scripts; browser-based but Internet independent Enables devices to synchronize data with a central database over Data collection software designed for mobile computers (EGRA) for recording and mathematics students responses (EGMA) assessments in oral early grade reading
