2 The Term The term CALL is the acronym of Computer-Assisted Language Learning. There are many other terms used. CALL is the most common term. 2
3 Definition CALL is the most common and long-lasting term. Any process in which a learner uses a computer and, as a result, improves his or her language. Refers to any endeavor involving the computers and associated technologies of all types. Examples??? 3
4 Other related terms CAI Computer-Aided Instruction (not necessarily language) CAL Computer-Assisted Learning, as with CAI, CAL may refer to using a computer to learn any subject. (focus on Learner) CALT Computer-Assisted Language Teaching, CALL but with emphasis on the teacher. CELL - Computer-Enhanced Language Learning. TELL - Technology-Enhanced Language Learning: IT and ICT - Information Technology/Information and Communication Technologies. NBLT - Network-Based Language Teaching (both LAN & WAN) MALL - Mobile Assisted Language Learning: 4

7 History The first computers used for language learning were large 1950s. Difficult to access. Very expensive Important for military reason. Used first in USA to study Russian because of cold war. In 1975 microcomputers were sold with 16 kb capacity. (Apps start to appear. People can access them. In 1980 CDs appeared. CDs enabled video-based exercises to replace text based ones. 7
8 History The term CALL appeared in 1983 for the first time? In 1990s thousands of programs had been published. Expand to literature was possible. Storage improved and speed processors become attainable. 8
9 Present The giant leap in technology was in 2000s.. Computer facilities become very common. Normalization of technology. Mobile phones nearly replaced laptops. Tablets provide powerful alternatives. No need for CDs or DVDs because of flash storage and Micro memory chips and availability of internet. Fast net browsing and downloading, availability to download video and audio in minutes. 9
10 Present Giant website and search engines (Wikipedia, Youtube, Google, Ask.com) , synchronization, instant messaging. Social media. Digital photography, E publishing, video editing, uploading, knowledge share. Office. Big screens. With many types. SMART BOARDS SMART TVs CONNECTED TO WEB. Video conferencing.
