Scripture Memory Program Psa. 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. Nothing enriches the spiritual life of the believer more than the discipline of Bible memory. Unfortunately, the memorization of Scripture has become a lost discipline and forgotten skill. But how can we claim a promise we do not know, and how can we meditate on God s Word so we can realize abundant blessing in this life? Psa. 1:1-2 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night [emphasis added]. Memorizing the Bible focuses our attention on the very words and promises of God like no other activity. The time spent in memorization and meditation enriches our intimacy with God, our understanding of His Word, our use of Scripture in daily problem solving, and our ability to witness effectively to people. Though many people want to memorize, they often fail as the result of lack of a plan. The following is an attempt to provide a plan/structure for Scripture memory. When memorizing a verse, diligently read the context before and after in order to correctly understand what the verse means. Reviewing a few of your verses daily will help you to remember them for present and future use. Write the verses out again and again as you memorize them. Think about the thoughts expressed in the verse and how they are connected in the verse. Memorize the verse by saying the topic first, then the Scripture reference, then the verse, then close with the reference. Ex. The Bible s Authority, Matt 4:4, But he answered. Matt 4:4 Memorize the verse word perfectly. Meditate on the word of God as you memorize it, seeking to understand what the verse means in its context and also what God wants to communicate to you through the verse. Meditation will lead to personal application. The outline below is composed of ten sections: 1) The Bible; 2) God; 3) Jesus Christ; 4) The Holy Spirit; 5) Angels 6) Man and Sin; 7) Salvation; 8) The Church; 9) End Times; 10 The Gospel. These categories provide an organized structure for the main areas of theology. Within each one of these sections we have a further breakdown, though more could be added. There is, nonetheless, enough material here to keep a person going for a long time. A few of the verses 1

have been repeated a couple of times in the outline. If you come across a verse that you had previously memorized under a different category, try to understand what it is in the verse that allows it to stand under this new category as well. Many verses contain a lot of information that cannot be exhausted under a single category heading. People often ask the pace at which a person ought to memorize verses. The best idea is to go at a rate that is manageable for you, but also challenges you to keep learning. For most people, the best plan is perhaps one or two a week. Generally speaking, there are two verses under each of the following sub-categories, though obviously the Bible has many verses that could be listed. By memorizing two and understanding their contexts you can complete one topic per week and begin the exciting process of comparing Scripture with Scripture. (There are enough verses here, at the rate of two per week, to memorize for about two years!! So have fun!) I. THE BIBLE A. Its Authority B. Its origin 1. Matt. 4:4 But He answered and said, It is written, MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD. 2. 2Tim. 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 2Tim. 3:17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 1. 2Pet. 1:20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one s own interpretation, 2Pet. 1:21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. C. The Need To Study and Meditate on the Bible 1. Psa. 1:1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! Psa. 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 2. 2Tim. 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 3. Josh. 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. 4. Prov. 22:17 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, And apply your mind to my knowledge; 2

II. GOD Prov. 22:18 Prov. 22:19 Prov. 22:20 Prov. 22:21 For it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, That they may be ready on your lips. So that your trust may be in the LORD, I have taught you today, even you. Have I not written to you excellent things Of counsels and knowledge, To make you know the certainty of the words of truth That you may correctly answer him who sent you? D. Scriptural Examples of People Studying and Obeying God s Word 1. Ezra 7:10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel. 2. Acts 17:11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. E. The Bible s Sufficiency 2Pet. 1:3.. His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 2Pet. 1:4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. A. He is Creator 1. Ex. 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. 2. Rev. 4:11 You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created. B. He is a Trinity 1. Ephesians 1:3 (The Father is God) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 2. Hebrews 1:8 (The Son is God) 3. Acts 5:3-4 (The Spirit is God. See below under IV. A. 1) 4. Deuteronomy 6:4 (His Essential Unity; there is only one God) 5. Isaiah 48:16 (Old Testament trinity) 6. 2 Corinthians 13:14 (New Testament trinity) 3
