Dear Nursing Program Applicant: Thank you for your interest in the GoldenWest College Registered Nurse (RN) program. Based on thousands of students who have applied to the nursing program before you, we have assembled this information to help make the application process as easy as possible for you. Please read this information carefully as it will answer the majority of your questions. We suggest printing this information to refer to during the completion of your application. Step 1 -- Qualifications First, you need to be sure you qualify. To be eligible to apply for admission to the nursing program, you must meet the following criteria: Be at least 18 years of age at time of admission Complete the four program prerequisites Bio 170 Anatomy, Bio 175 Human Physiology, Bio 210 General Microbiology and English 100 or equivalent with a grade of C or better (Please note that the science course must have been completed within the last 5 years) Complete the on-line nursing orientation and obtain a confirmation number. A new on-line orientation must be completed and a new confirmation number must be obtained for each application filed. Be in adequate health to perform the duties of a Registered Nurse. These requirements are detailed in the current college catalog (www.goldenwestcollege.edu/catalog). Please be sure you can meet these requirements for participation in clinical activities. Prior to enrolling in nursing coursework, all provisionally accepted applicants must: Submit official transcripts for all college level coursework. Pass the TEAS. You will be given a testing date. (If a student does not pass and remediation is necessary, the student will have one year to complete remediation and pass the TEAS for admission.) Please note: To participate in the clinical component of each nursing course, the health care agencies require each student meet the following requirements: Have no serious criminal or civil record (a clear background check) for the last 7 years. (Please review the BRN website (www.rn.ca.gov) for background issues that would prohibit a graduate nurse from being allowed to take the licensing exam) Have a clear urine drug test this drug test must be performed prior to the beginning of the semester Immunizations as per current Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines A Social Security number or I- 9 visa is required by some agencies. (Please note that a Social Security number is now required by the Board of Registered Nursing to take the licensing examination.)
Step 2 Application preparation Prior to submitting your application to the nursing program, there are some things for you to do: Read the GWC catalog sections about academic regulations, graduation requirements and the Associate degree nursing program. The catalog is available on-line (www.goldenwestcollege.edu/nursing ), in the GWC library and for purchase in the college bookstore. If you are not a student at GWC, complete an application to the college, available on the website (www.goldewestcollege.edu/admissions ) You will need a student ID to apply to the nursing program. Complete the on-line nursing orientation and obtain a confirmation number. This number must be entered on the application. You must complete a new on-line orientation and obtain a new confirmation number each time you file an application. If you have taken any prerequisites at schools outside of the Coast Community College district (GWC, OCC or Coastline) or Region 8 colleges you MUST attend the transcript evaluation session held in October. Please check the website for exact dates. Step 3 Filing your Application Applications are accepted once a year (check the website for the exact dates). Prior to the open application period, there is a mandatory transcript evaluation session for students who have taken one or more of the four pre-requisite classes at colleges outside of schools in the Coast Community College District and/or Region 8. If you have taken all your pre-requisites at GoldenWest, Coastline or Orange Coast College, and/or a Region 8 college, you do not need to attend this session. Applications will be accepted in-person in the Admission and Records office, Impacted Programs desk or by mail. Check the Admission and Records website for hours of operation. Only complete applications that were received or post-marked during the posted application period will be processed. A complete application includes: 1. Completed Student application page 1 with all sections filled out. If a section is not applicable to you, please enter N/A 2. Unofficial transcripts from all college attended, even if the coursework is not being applied toward the nursing program. Please add your name and GWC student ID number to each transcript page. 3. Petition form, signed by nursing counselor, showing equivalency of prerequisite coursework for pre-requisites taken outside of the Coast Community College District and/or Region 8.
4. Proof of high school graduation (copy of diploma or official transcript). If you already have a college degree as evidenced by transcripts submitted, this is not necessary for you to submit. 5. Confirmation number from on-line nursing orientation 6. Signature acknowledging understanding of consequences of falsifying the application. 7. Completed Student application page 2 Coursework 8. Calculation of your prerequisite science GPA 9. Calculation of your Chancellor s formula score 10. If you are a veteran, spouse or widow(er) of a veteran, and are seeking priority admission status, you must attach a copy of the honorable discharge form to the application as well as checking the appropriate box on the first page of the application. Step 4 Selection 1. All complete applications that are submitted by the deadline are evaluated based on a mathematical formula from the Community College Chancellor. The formula considers the grade in the four prerequisite courses, the number of repeats in the science pre-requisites and the overall college GPA. Each applicant must provide this score on the designated space on the application. 2. Applicants who do not meet the minimum score receive a letter stating that they are not eligible for admission. The letter also explains an appeal process for unqualified applicants. 3. All qualified applicants are entered into pool for random selection, based on the space available in the course for both Fall and Spring semesters. 4. A limited number of alternate applicants are selected. 5. The selected applicants and some alternates are required to take the TEAS and achieve the state-required score. 6. Students who are eligible to enroll in nursing coursework must submit required paperwork by specified deadlines or their space will be given to an alternate. 7. Qualified applicants who are not selected for entry are encouraged to re-apply during the next application period. We do not maintain a wait-list. 8. Qualified, selected applicants will receive an acceptance letter in the mail.
