3 Introducon The School of Informaon Science at Addis Ababa University is the first and original School of Informaon Science in the naon. Since its establishment in 1990, it has gone through series of structural and naming changes. It was first established in 1990 as the School of Informaon Studies for Africa (SISA). Later in 2002, the name SISA was changed to the Department of Informaon Science (DIS) under the Faculty of informacs of Addis Ababa University. In 2009, with the implementaon of new direcons as a result of transformaon endeavors undertaken at Addis Ababa University the Department of Informaon Science was renamed as the School of Informaon Sciences and was placed under the College of Management, Informaon and Economic Sciences (CMIES). The School connues to do its best in delivering the highest quality professional educaon to our students. We believe that richly intertwined programs of instrucon, research, and community engagement expose our students to innovave ideas, novel approaches, and the potenal of new technologies. Yet the pace of change in both social organizaons and informaon technology is such that the School must also provide life-long learning opportunies to established informaon professionals. We do this through our connuing educaon programs. 3 3

Undergraduate program 5 BSC in Informaon Systems The undergraduate program in Informaon Systems is offered in the regular day program and extension program with the objecve of equipping graduates in the theories and pracces of modern informaon systems and services at the naonal, regional and internaonal levels. The program is designed to prepare students who can assume such professional responsibilies as informaon management, systems analysis design, database design and management, managing networks, soware engineering, and designing and developing informaon retrieval systems. 7 Admission Requirements (Regular Program) Admissions to this Undergraduate program are processed by University Admissions Office. Graduaon Requirements The major graduaon requirements of the program include: Fulfilling the graduaon requirements set by the University. Successful compleon of a total of 143 credit hours as per the curriculum. Duraon of the Program Under normal circumstances, four years of study are required to complete in the regular program and five years to complete in the extension program. 7 7

8 Graduate program Currently, the School of Informaon Sciences offers two graduate programs namely M.Sc. in Informaon Science and M.Sc in Health Informacs. M.Sc. in Information Science Master of Science in Informaon Science degree program aims at equipping graduates with the knowledge in the theories and pracces of teaching and conducng research in Informaon Sciences as well as designing and managing modern informaon systems and services. It is designed to prepare students who can assume such professional responsibilies as university lecturers and researchers as well as informaon managers, systems analysts and planners. They will also have the technical knowledge to lead a data processing or informaon systems of an organizaon. The program consists of modules and thesis/project/phd proposal/series of papers or a comprehensive examinaon to be completed in 18 months aer joining the program. Students are also required to complete preparatory common modules on research methods and computaonal skills before registering for the program. Aer registering, students will take eight and half modules, and they can opt to do thesis research (opon A), or a final comprehensive examinaon (opon B). 8 8

Graduates from the program are expected to: 9 exhibit core skills, knowledge, and atude in informaon and knowledge management; apply scienfic principles in developing and managing informaon systems designed to meet user needs and interests; analyze, describe, and organize resources for effecve and efficient retrieval and disseminaon of informaon; apply management principles in planning, developing, markeng, and evaluang informaon systems in various sectors; conduct research in informaon and knowledge management, parcularly to address constraints and potenals in Ethiopian context; and build upon current knowledge of informaon and communicaon theories and technologies in planning, design, development, and delivery of informaon services; prepare/review curriculum for undergraduate programs and deliver courses in informaon science; facilitate learning opportunies that enable students to have the necessary skills in IT 9 9

Graduaon Requirements 12 Students are required to meet the following requirements in order to be eligible for the award of the degree in Informaon Science. A minimum grade of C in all the modules taken; Successful compleon of 8.5 modules for thesis opons and 10 modules for students with comprehensive exam opon; A minimum grade of sasfactory in thesis/project/phd proposal or a minimum grade of B in the comprehensive exam as applicable; An overall CGPA of at least 3.0. 12

13 Schedule of Course Offering As per the newly instuted modular approach at AAU, students will take the modules within the 18 months duraon of the program. Each module will take one month to complete and therefore students with thesis opon (opon A) will spend eight and half months doing the modules and addi- onal four months doing their thesis research. Academic breaks during this period will be as per the university s regulaon. Students with comprehensive exam opon (opon B) will spend ten months doing their modules and sit for the comprehensive exam as per the university me table. Duraon of the Program The duraon of the program is 18 months and no candidate shall expect to complete in less than this period. The duraon may be extended up to a maximum of 36 months upon the consent of the Research and Graduate Programs Office of Addis Ababa University. 13 13

14 M.Sc. in Health Informacs The Master of Science in Health informacs aims at equipping graduates with the knowledge in the theories and pracces of designing and managing modern health informaon systems and services. It is designed to prepare students who can assume responsibilies in the delivery of health services, engagement in policy and program development as well as research and training. They will also have the technical knowledge to lead informaon systems of health instu- ons. Graduates from this Program are expected to have:- knowledge of the basic principles of Public health; knowledge of the existence, structure and use of health databases and networks; knowledge of health data definions and standards as well as privacy and confidenality issues; the ability to plan specify and manage the implementaon of health informaon system projects; the ability to specify requirements for the development and/or adopon of health related informaon system; an understanding of the basic funcons and opera- ons of IT that have significant applicaon 14 in health pracces; 14

17 Admission to the M.Sc. in Health Informacs A Bachelor's degree in informaon science, computer science, informaon technology and related fields from a recognized university Or A Bachelor's degree in medical and health sciences or related fields Or A Bachelor's degree in any field of study with adequate experience in either IT related fields or health sciences And A passing mark on the entrance examinaon to the program Graduaon Requirements Students are required to meet the following requirements in order to be eligible for the award of the degree in health informacs. Duraon of the Program 18 The duraon of the program is 18 months (four semesters including the Summer/ Kiremt term) and no candidate shall expect to complete in less than this period.
