Page Three Fr. Ken s Corner Dear Sisters and Brothers of Saints Rose of Lima Parish, Recently, you may have seen reports of a 16-year old Oceanside youth being attacked and stabbed in a fight at a strip mall, while about 20 teens who were present used their cell phones to record the incident. Most did not move to help this young man named Khaseen Morris. He later died of his wounds. Almost twenty teens who apparently knew that a fight was to occur just stood there recording the fight, his suffering from the knife wounds led to this teenager s death. Almost 20 teens who are part of the future of our country did not lift a hand to assist someone being brutally murdered. His sister remarked, If they would have put their phones down, Khaseen would have probably made it. Was there no one who remembered Jesus telling the parable of the Good Samaritan? WHAT HAVE WE BEEN TEACHING OUR CHILDREN? Have we been teaching our children to take vengeance on a person when they re angry or disappointed? The reports say that an ex-boyfriend became jealous when Khaseen walked this 10 th grade girl home and began to threaten him via his cell phone before arriving with his gang of friends. Have we been teaching our children that violence is acceptable in overcoming our personal problems and disappointments? If we ve been teaching our children to stand up against bullying, to love one another, to help one another, to watch out for and to assist one another, then it looks like we ve failed. Or perhaps, we need to ask another question, How is it that our children are not learning and living and walking the good path that we have been trying to teach? WHAT HAVE WE BEEN TEACHING OUR CHILDREN? Have we been teaching our children that it s no big deal to miss Sunday Mass; that Keeping Holy The Sabbath Day isn t really important? Have we been teaching our children that participation in athletic activities is the ultimate success? Have we been teaching our children (and grandchildren) that winning in sports is more important than good sportsmanship? Has the absence of parents at Sunday Mass shown by example to our children that Holy Communion - receiving Jesus - is not as important as going golfing, or boating or going to the beach? It s no secret that children do what their parents do. For the first eight or nine years of their lives, children see their parents as their protectors, their shining and guiding lights. For those first most important formative years, parents, YOU are the true super-heroes that your kids look up to. If you use bad language, guess what, your children will imitate you. If you show kindness, consideration and compassion to those you meet, so will they desire to do what you do. If you show them that your relationship with Jesus Christ is important, a priority that you re making in your life, and you make certain sacrifices to make this happen, they will notice this as well and probably with a little straying in the years from thirteen to their early twenties (when they just begin to mature) - they can return to their roots. SO, WHAT ARE WE TEACHING OUR CHILDREN OR WHAT ARE THEY LEARNING FROM US, FROM SOCIETY IN GENERAL, FROM OUR POLITICS, FROM VIDEO GAMES, THE INTERNET, TELEVISION AND MOVIES? Even after Columbine, Las Vegas, Sandy Hook, Charleston, and Orlando - five incidents that immediately come my to mind (even as the ages of the shooters varied widely), we all have to admit there is one common element; a profound disregard and disrespect for human life by the perpetrators, and an alarming apathy and even fear in coming to the assistance of others. IS THIS WHAT WE RE TEACHING OUR CHILDREN?
