Foundation degrees A d e g r e e o n y o u r d o o r s t e p LOCAL OPPORTUNITY NATIONAL EXCELLENCE INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION
What is a foundation degree? A foundation degree is a new higher education qualification that can be taken full-time in two years and is available through the University of Plymouth Colleges (UPC) network right across the South West. Specifically designed to increase employment and career progression prospects, foundation degrees develop: Work-specific skills that are relevant to a particular sector of industry Key skills like communication and problem-solving Generic skills such as reasoning, professionalism and work process management People with foundation degrees will have the potential to make an immediate contribution in the workplace and an early impact on the bottom line. Most foundation degrees also have clear progression routes onto the final year of many honours degree courses at the University of Plymouth. Who are foundation degrees for? Foundation degrees are for anyone wanting to improve their skills, understanding and knowledge in line with employers needs. Students may be employees who want to progress in their careers, or people returning to work after a career break. They may be A Level students who want a work-related qualification, Advanced Modern Apprentices, or people who have GNVQs or NVQ Level 3 qualifications and who are seeking the next level up.
How long does a foundation degree course take? Foundation degrees can be taken full-time in two years or they can be taken part-time over a longer period - giving the student the flexibility to both earn and learn. What qualification does a foundation degree provide? Foundation degrees are a qualification in their own right and people with foundation degrees can use the letters FdA (for arts-based subjects) or FdSc (for science-based subjects) after their names. What about further study? Foundation degrees are designed to lead directly to employment but, if you study with UPC, most of them will also give you access to the final year of an honours degree at the University of Plymouth. Where are the courses? Foundation degree courses are available locally through UPC. All further education courses in Devon and Cornwall run them - as do Somerset College of Arts and Technology in Taunton, Weymouth College, Highlands College in Jersey and the City of Bristol College. With UPC, the right qualification is provided in the right place at the right time. 3
