BA 560 Syllabus Southern Illinois University Master of Business Administration Course No.: BA560. Management of Information Technology (MIT) Course Description: Information systems principles applied to business. Analysis of how information systems support operational, tactical, and planning decisions. Instructor: (Dr.) Mary Sumner, Professor, Management Information Systems School of Business, Southern Illinois University Email: msumner@siue.edu Cell phone: 001-314-606-6279 Course Objectives: This course is about information systems as a business issue. Information systems are a combination of technology, business processes and people. Effectively managed, information systems can be instrumental in creating business value. The key is developing an understanding of what it takes to identify, create, implement and use information systems balancing the demands of technology, process and people to support specific strategic objectives and operational performance demands. This course is structured as a combination lecture and seminar. It will combine theoretical information with a variety of activities to expose students to a wide variety of managerial challenges for using IS effectively. The course objectives are: 1. Understand how information systems support operational, tactical, and strategic decisions. 2. Understand how information technology supports competitive strategy. 3. Understand IT infrastructure as the foundation for building and re-engineering business processes. 4. Understand the business justification for adopting enterprise systems (ERP) as a basis for adopting integrated information systems and data. 5. Understand the role of management of information systems development, including project management. 6. Participate in a systems evaluation and acquisition exercise in response to an RFP. 7. Recognize the evolution of ebusiness and emarkets. 8. Participate in a global outsourcing project involving offshoring of IT systems development. 9. Understand project management best practices for time, scope, risk, and cost management. 10. Identify ethical and security issues related to the use of information systems. 1

Course Requirements: End of Chapter Cases, 50 points. You will be on a team of two students. Each team will have an opportunity to analyze an end-of-chapter case. Guidelines are: 1. The team will be a management consulting team. 2. Please develop a Powerpoint presentation to answer the following questions. You will have an opportunity to provide your presentation in-class on the date listed below with the names of the teams, the cases, and the dates. Summarize key points of the case (one slide). Answer case questions (one or two slides). Find a www.youtube.com video that is a good resource for the case. Make recommendations to management based on the case (one slide). List web resources as references for the case. Key information technology concepts quiz, 100 points. This is a multiple choice quiz on information technology concepts in the textbook. This will be scheduled on May 24. Information technology case: Singapore Airlines, 100 points. Due May 24. The objective of this case is to give you a chance to describe how Singapore Airlines can use information technology to gain a competitive advantage. Your topics are: 1. What is Singapore Airlines competitive strategy? 2. How can Singapore Airlines use information technology to support its competitive strategy? Rivals Systems acquisition RFP exercise and evaluation, 50 points. Due May 24. You will participate in an in-class case to evaluate an ERP system for a company. You will evaluate the three different vendors and write a memo to the CEO of the company with the following information: a. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each vendor proposal for an ERP system? b. Which vendor do you recommend? c. What are your reasons for the selection? 4

Global IT Outsourcing Interview Project, 100 points. Due June 4. You can send it by email: msumner@siue.edu This is a real-world case. You are asked to find a company which has participated in an information technology outsourcing project. This can be a Singapore company or organization which has outsourced a project to another country. This can be a Singapore company which is partnering with a U.S. or other country to handle the offshore development (e.g. programming, maintenance, other development). You can interview a project manager or someone who has participated in the outsourcing project. The questionnaire will be provided to you. Things to Do.
