UNESP s Graduate Programs: Fields of International Excellence

Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP UNESP s Graduate Programs: Fields of International Excellence Graduate Programs: Having as one of its major goals the training of professionals capable of generating scientific, technological, artistic and sociocultural knowledge and development in all fields, UNESP is currently an international benchmark in education, training and qualification of students. This success is evidenced by national and international assessments and also by about 15 thousand students enrolled in over 200 Graduate Degree programs offered by the institution. In order to further qualify Graduate Studies, UNESP develops a strategic plan. Expanding and strengthening internal, national and international exchange of professors and graduate students is the first step. Articulating activities among the graduate and undergraduate programs is another important step. Stimulating the implementation of thematic curriculum structures that enable training of professionals to work in multi-disciplinary strategic areas is also part of this plan. The presence of visiting professors in graduate programs is also encouraged, as well as the development of double-degree and joint programs with partner institutions. UNESP s programs have a strong influence on the professional life of students and in the number of Graduate Degree certificates granted in the country. UNESP is in second place among the universities in Brazil and is the third institution among Brazilian and U.S. Universities in number of PhDs. Biological Sciences programs stand out in the areas of Agriculture Animal Science, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Medicine and Dentistry. Our students are trained to work in agriculture, agribusiness and various health sectors. 3

In the Exact Sciences area, Chemistry and Physics stand out as two of the best programs in Brazil in basic and applied research. The research developed produce remarkable and effective knowledge in technology, new medicines and materials. In the Social Sciences area, UNESP develops programs of great importance in Brazil, especially in Portuguese Language, Foreign Language Studies, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Geography and History. In addition, it has played a major role in formulating and implementing public policies to improve the education system in the country. These programs allow the University to respond effectively to the new demands of human resources training in the Brazilian and Latin American labor market. 4

Aquaculture Center of Aquaculture of UNESP E-mail: pgaqui@caunesp.unesp.br The Graduate Program in Aquaculture has as main objective the education of Masters and PhDs to work in teaching and technical-scientific field, developing and transferring technology to the productive sector. The Program is characterized by offering basic and applied subjects closely correlated. The first ones provide solid theoretical and practical basis about biology of aquatic organisms and balance of artificial and natural inner water ecosystems. The applied subjects enable students to work in the production of fish, amphibians, reptiles and crustaceans with comprehensive approach, respecting interface with aquatic biology and socioeconomic activities of large and small producers. Biology and Handling of Natural Aquatic Ecosystems Biology of Aquatic Organisms with Potential for Aquaculture Food and Nutrition of Aquatic Organisms Pathology of Aquatic Organisms 6

Biosciences and Biotechnology Graduate Department E-mail: posgrad@fcfar.unesp.br Created in 1997, the Graduate Program in Bioscience and Biotechnology applied to Pharmacy offers to graduate students the opportunity to act and develop topics of great scientific, technological and social importance, among which the Diagnostic Biotechnology, the Biopharmaceuticals and the Biomolecular Functional Exploration are highlighted. The production of vaccines and blood products and the development of diagnostic kits are among the goals of research conducted under the Program. Moreover, the absorption, technology transfer and production of recombinant proteins of therapeutic interest are stimulated, as well as new biomolecules with antifungal, antibacterial and antitumor activities. Another strategic objective of the Program is to develop special programs to fields of social concern, such as viral and neglected diseases. Diagnostic Biotechnology and Biopharmaceuticals Functional Exploration of Biomolecules and Xenobiotics Pathophysiology Basis of Diseases: Cellular, Molecular and Epidemiological Aspects 7

Chemistry Graduate Department E-mail: spg@iq.unesp.br In harmony with the development of Graduate Programs in all fields of knowledge, the Graduate Programs in Chemistry has prospered quickly. A consequence of this is the strengthening of scientific, technological and innovation basis, education of qualified professors, efficiency in capturing and managing resources from state and federal development agencies, and incentive to partnerships with national and international groups. Its competent and cohesive faculty is mainly composed by chemists, besides physicists, material engineers, pharmacists, and supported by mathematicians and computer and statistics experts. The Program offers to graduate students the opportunity to practice cutting-edge science, with high Scientific, Technological and Social repercussion. Currently, UNESP s Graduate Program in Chemistry celebrates the qualification of 652 master and PhD students and is configured as a Program of national and international excellence. Analytical Chemistry Chemistry of Materials: Biomaterials Chemistry of Natural Products Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry Electrochemistry Environmental Chemistry 8

Dentistry Graduate Department E-mail: posgradu@foar.unesp.br With a basic group of researchers that work specifically in the fields of Periodontics, Implant Dentistry and Endodontics, the Graduate Program in Dentistry offers new Master Degree groups every two years and new PhD groups annually, with an average duration of 24 months and 42 months, respectively. The interdisciplinarity of the Program brings important benefits for research and education of graduate students, besides providing more interaction with the undergraduate course. Biological Aspects, Influence of Host and Implant Physicochemical Properties on Osseointegration Biological, Microbiological and Radiographic Evaluation in Endodontics Biomaterials for Bone Reconstruction Etiopathogenesis and Diagnosis of Periodontal and Peri Implant Diseases Evaluation of Physicochemical Properties in Endodontics Prevention and Treatment of Periodontal Diseases 9

Genetics Graduate Department E-mail: posgraduacao@ibb.unesp.br In 28 years of existence, besides various technical publications and productions, 200 Master Dissertations and 145 PhD Thesis have been defended, numbers that attest the success of the Program. Currently, 26 professors are certified as advisors and responsible for subjects. Among the students there are graduates from various fields, such as: biological sciences, biomedicine, agronomy and forestry. The Genetics Graduate Degree Program develops research projects exploring the frontier of knowledge and the rich biodiversity present in Brazil. Geography Graduate Department E-mail: posgrad@fct.unesp.br UNESP offers one of the most respected Graduate Programs in Geography in Brazil. Its Master and PhD programs aim to prepare human resources to generate, apply and disseminate knowledge in order to develop Brazilian Geography. With highly qualified faculty, it has strong links with other national and foreign institutions, to develop joint research activities as well as collaboration to hold events and publications. In order to maintain and expand the internationalization of the Program, students, especially from the PhD program, have been encouraged and supported to undertake internships abroad, sandwich PhD and joint supervision of thesis. The internationalization of the Program is also evident by the presence of foreign students from Latin American, European and African countries. The collective environment of the groups and laboratories linked to them becomes the basis of support of both research projects, and the integration among undergraduate and graduate students and professors, extending to work with the community and institutional exchanges. By December 2010, 303 dissertations and 128 thesis were completed in UNESP s Graduate Program in Geography that is locate in the city of Presidente Prudente.
