1 General 1.1 Solution Overview What is NetApp MAT4Shift? Answer: NetApp MAT4Shift is a PowerShell based tool that enables customers to quickly migrate their Windows Virtual Machine workloads from VMware ESX to Microsoft Hyper-V. The MAT4Shift tool performs all the steps required to migrate the VM workloads with near-zero touch extremely rapidly. This solution uses several unique NetApp technologies including FlexClone, VM disk format conversions and the ability to host both NFS and CIFS shares on a single volume. What business needs does this solution address? Answer:. With this solution organizations can migrate part or all of their Windows workflows from ESX to Hyper-V. This allows them to save licensing costs while maintaining uptime of their environment. What is the value of the solution? Answer: The solution has several value propositions for customers: Fast migration of Virtual Machines. MAT4Shift leverages FlexClone technology, along with the OnCommand PowerShell Toolkit to rapidly clone and convert the VM disk format. This allows for the VM migration to occur during normal Server maintenance windows. Near-Zero touch migration. MAT4Shift collects all relavent configuration information from the VM guests being migrated. These configuration settings include external memory, cpu, network VM settings, as well as, internal settings such as Network Adapter and disk configuration. The solution injects all the appropriate configuration settings into the guest via PowerShell scripts to automatically reconfigure the guest VM once it has been migrated to Hyper-V. Fully scripted migration. Since the MAT4Shift solution is a PowerShell script, it can be fully scripted. While it has menu driven interface, all key actions can be executed using switches. This allows customers to fully script and automate the VM migration prodess. Who should use this solution? Answer: Any organization that currently has a VMware ESX environment that is looking at moving some or all of their workloads to Microsoft Hyper-V. These environments can include development, QA and production private cloud infrastructures. How does this solution work with VMware ESX? Answer: The solution connects into the VMware ESX environment (using VMware s PowerCLI PowerShell cmdlets) and collects information about all the Virtual Machines currently powered on and running. It also collects the configuration settings (such as CPU, memory, network and disk) along with the Guest Operating System. It then determines which of the running VMs are eligible for migration and marks them as such. How does this solution work with Microsoft Hyper-V? Answer: The solution interfaces with Microsoft Hyper-V through the Hyper-V PowerShell cmdlets. It uses these cmdlets to create new Virtual Machines that are configured using the same settings as the original ESX-running VM. It then mounts the converted disks to the newly created VMs. 3 NetApp MAT4Shift FAQ
