ThisprojectexaminestherolealternativereligionplaysinLosAngelesliteraturebetween1860and1960 andprovidesanoverviewofthespiritualcultureofthecity.usingalternativereligionandotherdynamics withinthespirituallifeoflosangelesopensupthecanon;employingreligionasacriticallensilluminates theconjunctionofhistory,literature,andurbangrowththatcharacterizeslosangelesculture.thisis especiallyrelevantinasettingwhere,accordingtoa1941guidetothecity, themultiplicityanddiversityof faithsthatflourishintheaptlynamedcityofangelsprobablycannotbeduplicatedinanyothercityon earth. Thegrowingneedforreligion sconsolationisnotlimitedtocaliforniaduringthetwentiethcentury, butinsteadreflectsafocusthatgoesbacktotherootsoftheamericanrepublic.itisapparent,however, thatthespecificsocialphenomenaofabundantsectsinthisurbanspacecanprovidekeystounderstanding theregion sculture.
