What is a Domain Name? First of all, let s just make sure you know what a domain name is. www.google.com www.amazon.com www.youtube.com These are domain names. It s simply the name of your site... www.yoursite.com. You need to put some thought into naming your site, but you have to be prepared for a little compromise. Unfortunately, with millions of websites online now, you may not be able to get the domain name of your choice. For instance, for your online supplement store, a great domain name might be dietsupplements.com, dietpills.com, weightlossstore.com or let s say slimming.com (this one is ours) but all the other domain names have also been registered. However, with a little thought you can come up with the perfect, available domain name. Think of what your site is about. It s a supplement store, but what type of supplements are you selling and who is your store aimed at? Here s a great way to think of a useful, relevant domain name: Try your first choice, so in this example we ll go with a 'diet store'. Pick a name and just keep adapting it until you get the name you are happy with. dietstore.com bestdietstore.com discountdietstore.com yourdietstore.com discountdietpillstore.com bestdietstoreonline.com trusteddietstore.com myonlinedietstore.com You can also try and focus on keywords that indicate buyer intent, such as: how to, stop, get, buy, learn, and order. Try these in your domain name.

buydietpills.com bestbuydietproducts.com orderdietpillsonline.com Just write down as many variations as you can before you choose one. Keywords & Domain Names Keywords: The oil of the internet and much simpler than you might think. So you have your site quickly set up and online... how do you get visitors to it? Well everyone on the Web uses words to search for the information they are looking for. You re the same yourself, right? Let s say you want to look for a weight loss pill... You would go to your favourite search engine for example www.google.com and type in weight loss pill, or best weight loss pill, or buy weight loss pill, or something along those lines. The words you type in are called 'Keywords'. All the search engines do is match the keywords you type into the search box, with the keywords on billions of websites all over the web. The search engines decide which results to show you from the Keywords websites use. When you build your online store/website, you choose keywords as sort of labels for your site. They tell the search engines what your website is about. So if you search for weight loss pill, the search engine won t show you results for sites using let s say exotic sports car as their keywords. Just think of keywords as an indexing system. Imagine the internet is one big filing cabinet, full of websites and the search engines use the keywords to find the sites you may be looking for. So choosing the right keywords for your site is important. But don t worry because we re going to show you how to get it right.

Remember, keywords are just the words we use to search for things online. As you can see, when we use them correctly, we are more likely to find what we are looking for. This really is the key to having a successful website. ( Key... Keywords. See what we did there :) Finding Keywords for Your Domain Let's go through how to find the best keywords for your website. In this explanation we will use an example topic raspberry ketone but you can then apply the same principles to choosing a domain name for your store. To start with you need to know how you determine how competitive a keyword is. When you are searching for something online, you can try as many keywords as you want. They only take a few seconds to type in, so what have you got to lose? But when you are picking the keywords for your site, it s no good just picking the first words in your head. You need to find out how many people are searching for the keyword and how strong the competition for the keyword is from other website owners. Please understand that choosing your keywords is probably the most important aspect of your site. This will determine how successful your site is. You need keywords that enough people are searching for to give you plenty of visitors, but you don t want too much competition, or you won t be able to rank your site high enough on the search engines, mainly Google. As an example we ll use the buy raspberry ketone. As you can probably guess, people who are searching for this term are after a diet pill and so the search result are full of reviews, stores and information sites. The more you research and learn about what people are searching for in your niche, along with what keywords people are using to search, the better off you ll be. We highly recommend doing a lot of research on the supplement niche, be sure to tap into trending products!

Right back to our example... Let s look at buy raspberry ketone in Google: Nearly 4 million results, but it s not a very specific, targeted keyword, is it? It doesn t even specify a price or location. You might have also noticed that this time we ve put the keyword in quote marks... But people don t search using quotes, do they?

Correct. But we re using them to force Google to show us other sites using the exact phrase. Those sites are your true competition for any keyword. So this technique shows us roughly how difficult this keyword is to rank for. Remember, when Google returns its results, if we DON T use quote marks, it gives us the sites using any of the words and any combination of the words, not the phrase as we ve actually typed it. When we DO use quote marks, it forces Google to only show sites using the whole phrase between the quote marks. This is what we need to see to get the true competition for a keyword. Google Search Options Here s how Google s search options work Broad Match This is the default option. If you search the keyword tennis shoes, you ll get results back containing tennis and shoes, in any order, and possibly along with other terms. The results could also show singular/plural forms, synonyms, and other relevant variations. For example, you might get results for tennis shoe or tennis sneakers. Phrase Match If you enter your keyword in quotation marks, as in "tennis shoes," your search results would include sites optimized for the keyword tennis shoes, in this order, and possibly with other terms before or after the phrase. For example, red tennis shoes but not for shoes for tennis, tennis shoe, or tennis sneakers. Phrase match is more targeted than broad match, but more flexible than exact match. Exact Match If you surround your keywords in brackets - such as [tennis shoes] - your results would include the specific phrase tennis shoes, in this order, and without any other terms in the query. For example, you wouldn t get results for red tennis shoes or tennis shoe. Exact match is the most targeted option. Now let s get more targeted and look at buy raspberry ketone UK in Google:

Only around half 2 million results, that s a big difference from the 4 million we found for buy raspberry ketone. So this keyword has less sites using it, which means less competition for you. What else might people type in when they are looking buy raspberry ketone? Maybe they are looking to buy it cheaply, most people want to save money! Let s take a look at buy cheap raspberry ketone.

Now that s much better. 562,000 which for keyword purposes is not very many at all. Let s try another one. Even more specific and targeted... buy cheap raspberry ketone online. You can repeat this process by refining the keyword down until you ve reached an even lower number if you like. But here s the thing... From the above examples we now know how to find out how much competition a keyword or key phrase has. But we have to combine what we have learnt here, with finding keywords that people are searching for.

If you work with keywords that are searched for regularly, but don t have masses of competition, you re on to a winning combination. So if you find a keyword with hardly any results. it s no use using that keyword unless people are actually searching for it. Keyword Search Volumes How do we know what people are searching for? We ask Google. Click here to go to Google s Adwords Tool. Here s what you ll see: Google stores the information from so many things online. One of which is how many times a keyword is searched for on a monthly basis. This can be incredibly useful to you, when you build your site. As you can see above, all you have to do is type in a keyword you want to research, fill in the code in the captcha, and click search.

This image is a little different to what you ll see in Google, as we ve chopped it to get all the info on the page. You can see the first result is the actual keyword we typed in. But what Google also gives you are lots of other related keywords. And you can see the competition level, and how many times each word or phrase was searched in a month. This is REALLY useful when you are putting together your site. There are 2 kinds of search results, but for a site like yours, which is attracting visitors globally, use the Global Monthly Searches when you research.

Here s Google s explanation of the 2 different results: Global Monthly Searches The approximate 12-month average of user queries for the keyword on Google search. This data is specific to your Keyword Match Type selection. Local Monthly Searches If you specified a country or language for your search, this is the approximate 12-month average number of user queries for the keyword for those countries and languages. It is specific to your Keyword Match Type selection. As your review site is not geographically targeted, use the Global Monthly Searches figure when researching. Another great use for this tool is to research and find extra keywords. So you can use this to check the statistics on a keyword you already have in mind. But you can also put in a general keyword, like we have above, and find related keywords. You might find some great performing keywords this way. A Little Research Is Worth Its Weight in Gold Make sure you use a combination of Google search and he Adwords keyword tool to narrow down a domain name with a powerful search volume and not too much competition. Google can show you what people are searching for and how often. Use this to your advantage. Simply follow the process we have shown you here and put your own keyword suggestions in.

Choosing Keywords: A Big Tip Now do the above searches in Google and use the Adwords tool for the names of the diet supplements and products on your review site. Then the names with discounts' and buy like this: product name discounts buy product name This is a good way of finding out if people are researching the product prior to buying or actually looking WHERE to buy it. If there are plenty of people searching, then they are great keywords to use. Each product will vary depending how popular it is and how well the product name is known on the internet. But obviously if you find one with a good amount of searches and not too much competition in Google, GO FOR IT! Adding a Domain to Your Store Adding a domain name to your store is easy! From the Dashboard - select the store you want to add the domain name to and click the 'Manage Store' button.
