Technology Technology is a means by which we can learn, teach, and participate in mathematics. There are a variety of technological tools available for computing, measuring, capturing and drawing visual images, analyzing data, and solving problems. These tools enhance, not replace, the more traditional ways of doing mathematics. Instead of students being overly concerned about efficiently and effectively computing, these tools assist with the computation so that the student can focus on reasoning, interpreting, and analyzing problems. The teacher plays an important role in deciding when and to what extent technology will be used. Technology can help teachers connect the learning of various mathematical skills with the development of mathematical understanding for major concepts. As students use computers and calculators the teacher has an opportunity to observe them and to focus on the processes used by students while they are investigating and solving problems. Students can explore and solve problems using large numbers or they can investigate characteristics of shapes or construct graphs using various software or programs available in our district. Technology should be integrated into the mathematics curriculum whenever it is appropriate. Technology engages students in higher levels of thinking and applying mathematics. The use of calculators, digital cameras, computers, and other technological tools should begin in prekindergarten and continue throughout a student s schooling.
