The University of Winnipeg Business Application Systems This course is devoted mainly NOT to system development, but to the study of existing business systems Remember 1803? How do information systems support businesses? 15 Two points of view to study existing systems Functional: In what environment does this system function? What is its purpose? What are its inputs? Who inputs them? How? what are its outputs? What is the content of each output? Who uses this output? How? When? Why? Structural: what are the data and processes in this system; what is the flow of data from process to process? How is the system set up physically? 16 8
Benefits of this study 1. understanding of basic functional systems with which other systems that you might be developing will interact, 2. preliminary base for consulting work, esp. to smaller businesses 3. a good understanding of business processes and the data they require, as a basis for business (system) analysis work 17 9
