Halifax Electric Membership Corporation Retired Manager s Scholarship What is the Retired Manager s Scholarship? The Retired Manager s Scholarship is a one-time grants of $375 awarded annually to two high school seniors whose parents/guardians are members of Halifax Electric Membership Corporation. Why was the scholarship established? The Directors and Management of Halifax EMC believe that the future of America is in the hands of the youth of today. Development of tomorrow s leaders is achieved through educational opportunities today. To this end, these scholarships were established to help provide educational opportunities beyond the high school level for deserving students. The scholarship is named in honor of the retired General Managers of Halifax EMC. What is the objective of the scholarship? To provide financial assistance that will make it possible for two high school graduates with financial need, as well as scholastic and extracurricular achievements to continue their education beyond the high school level. Who is eligible to apply? Current high school seniors whose parents/guardians are members of Halifax EMC are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Each applicant must have been accepted for admittance as a full-time student in an accredited North Carolina university or college. College includes fouryear, junior, community, vocational, or technical schools. How do you apply? Students wishing to make application should contact their high school guidance counselor or the Enfield or Macon offices of Halifax EMC to obtain an application form. Completed applications must be postmarked and/or returned to Halifax EMC by April 1.
Mail applications to: Scholarship Committee Halifax EMC P. O. Box 667 Enfield, NC 27823-0667 How are recipients selected? Selection is made by a Scholarship Committee. Decisions made by this committee shall be final. Each applicant will be identified by a number and his/her identity will be unknown to the Committee until after the selection is made. Selection is determined based on the following criteria: 1. Need for financial assistance 40% 2. Scholastic Achievement 40% 3. Extracurricular Achievement/Activities 20% All applicants for the scholarships shall be considered on the above criteria without regard for race, age, color, religion, sex, national origin, or existence of a handicap. How are the scholarship funds paid? The scholarship recipients shall notify Halifax EMC in writing, of their college enrollment. The Cooperative will then pay the institution in the year scholarship is granted. The funds may be used for tuition, books, and fees 1 during any term while the student is enrolled in the school. Should the recipient withdraw from school, payment of scholarship monies shall cease and reimbursement of unused monies shall be made to Halifax EMC. Are there any other conditions to these scholarships? In the event the scholarship recipient receives financial assistance from other sources which would constitute a full scholarship, the recipient shall notify Halifax EMC and relinquish rights to the scholarship.
