- Orion 1 Goal of this document This document describes the requirements for installing the software NPM. 2 NPM system requirements (Solarwinds Website) 2.1 Software and Hardware NOTE: The minimum server requirements listed assume default configuration. Significantly increasing the poll rate or statistic collection rate could result in additional load on the server, which may require a larger CPU or additional memory. 3 Orion Réf. 001 21/2/2012
3 Orsenna - Recommandations The environment recommended by Orsenna for NPM + SAM is: - Windows 2008 R2 US - RAM : 8GB - Quad-core (Physical computer recommended) A virtualized environment (VMWare) could be used, but the performance can be impacted if it exceeds 50 pollings/ sec (example: 500 devices with 6 monitors polled every 60 seconds). Concerning Database, you can use SQL Express 2008 US (10GB limit). If you want to store more passive events, we recommend using SQL SERVER Standard or Enterprise. A standalone server should be dedicated to Orion. You have also the possibility to expand the number of elements or applications that you can monitor with Orion: - Additional Polling Engine - Additional Web Server With the addition of Orion Additional Polling Engines, you can: - Distribute the polling load for your Orion installation between multiple servers to provide scalability for large networks - Reduce the impact on your poller performance as a result of rapid growth within your virtualization infrastructure - Extend the functionality of Orion modules to your polling engines at no additional cost By adding an additional web server, the Orion website can run on a different machine than the Orion server, enabling more users to access the Orion web portal without affecting performance and providing increased scalability and deployment flexibility. 4 Orion Réf. 001 21/2/2012
4 Model The purpose of setting up a model is to validate the different types of components that you want to monitor. 4.1 Monitoring account It is recommended to use a local administrator account on the machine. In the case of a WMI monitoring, a specific account (eg supervision) with administrator rights type should be used. 4.2 Routers, Switchs You must configure ACL (access list) to allow Orion server to collect information through SNMP. It is recommended having a specific community name. On these devices you have also the possibility to redirect traps and syslog to the management console. 4.3 Systems If you would like to monitor hardware components (Temperature, Power Supply, RAID ), you need first to setup manufacturer agents (Insight Manager, OpenManage, ServerView, Director ) The SNMP agent on OS must be activated (SNMP service - Windows, Net-snmp - Linux...) and allowed read access from the management console (Orion). You have also the possibility to redirect traps or Windows Event Logs. 4.4 SNMP for specifics software We could activate SNMP agents for some software (Oracle, Lotus...). 4.5 WMI (SAM) The Windows environment allows through WMI to access performance counters for: Exchange, SQL, IIS, Citrix, Symantec... It is necessary to have permissions. You can check the permissions with: - Wmimgmt.msc - test access to WMI information from a remote machine - Dcomcnfg.exe Check local and remote DCOM configuration 5 Orion Réf. 001 21/2/2012
4.6 Event Viewer If you want to collect a large volume of Windows logs, the best way is to use a specific tool like Snare that redirects these events to a syslog server (eg : Kiwi Syslog Server). 4.7 Syslog If you want to keep a large amount of syslog, it is recommended to install KIWI Syslog to collect all these values in a specific database. Kiwi Syslog can redirect filtered syslogs to the management console (Orion). 4.8 SMS If you would like to send SMS alerts, we recommend the product Send Quick Alert Plus. 6 Orion Réf. 001 21/2/2012
