A bird s eye view on PHOTOVOLTAICS Technical and economical aspects Discover how photovoltaics (PV) will affect our life and your business. This bird s eye view course takes you from the economic aspects and rationale, through the working principles and production, to applications, your business and our daily lives. Enjoy the flight over the landscape of this unique renewable energy! 29 OCTOBER ENERGYVILLE, GENK 1 DECEMBER KU LEUVEN TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS, GHENT
Course summary Program Solar energy is the key to a sustainable energy future. Cost has gone down tremendously while efficiency is ever-increasing. PV is now a cost effective electricity source in many applications. Further deployment of PV, however, requires a seamless integration in the electricity grid and in the environment. New opportunities arise at the crossroads of the PV industry and the building, automotive, etc. industry. PV will become transversal through many industries. This course aims at increasing general awareness about the rationale and economics of PV, its working principle, the production of solar cells and their influence on the grid, and about the various applications of PV. You will get state-of-the-art insights from imec - and industry lecturers with outstanding experience in PV. This concentrated course on PV targets technical managers, decision takers, engineers involved in product development, designers and engineers from various industries (energy, construction, automotive,...), and people interested in understanding the main technical and economic aspects of PV, and its applications. Jef Poortmans & Bart Onsia Solar energy - Rationale & Economics A drastic acceleration in the deployment of carbon neutral energy sources is needed in order to reduce CO2-emissions and keep global warming below more or less secure limits. Solar energy is a key component for the sustainable and renewable energy future. The race for the market is open! You will get an overview of the key performance indicators, the cost structure, the market and the opportunities for the local industry. Jef Poortmans PV - Working principle & Technology Follow the path from sunlight to electrical energy. In this lecture we will fly over the history of photovoltaics, touch upon the working principle and how it relates to the figures of merit. We ll then zoom in on the various technologies and their (dis-) advantages. To conclude we ll share what we see on the horizon.
Jef Poortmans & Jonathan Govaerts, Kris Baert & Johan Driesen (KU Leuven) Bart Onsia & Jef Poortmans, Stefan Dewallef (Soltech), Karel de Brabandere (3E) Special Addition From PV production to energy production Embark on the journey from the manufacturing of PV cells and modules to energy on the grid. We ll start from the PV cell types and their processing. Cells are then integrated into a module. Module manufacturing processes and materials vary as a function of the cell technology, but also as a function of the final application (e.g. standard rooftop modules vs. BIPV). And the journey continues from the module to the grid over DC optimizers, inverters, where we ll discuss their function, reliability, and future prospects. And then we arrive at our destination: electrical energy on the grid. Here we ll discuss the intermittency of the solar energy, and how to manage that and provide an outlook towards tomorrow s grid. PV - Applications & systems, services PV is much more than the widely known standard rooftop modules, also called Building Applied PV (BAPV). Specific applications are being developed to meet certain market requirements. Building Integrated PV (BIPV) for example provides enhanced aesthetics, extra deployment area,... We ll walk you through the PV value chain, the various applications like BAPV, BIPV, automotive, quickly deployable, and how these applications influence the value chain or create whole new ones. We halt to compare standard PV modules with tailor-made and grid-connected with standalone. It is at this point that the life of your PV system starts. We ll discuss monitoring and operation and maintenance aspects. As a bonus to the visitors of the Ghent edition, the service offer of our hosts will be introduced and a visit to the PV test installation will be possible. As a bonus to the visitors of the Genk edition, the THOR technology park, EnergyVille campus, project plans, and activities will be introduced.
