Elk Grove Unified School District s New Academy The commitment of Elk Grove High School s Technology and Digital Arts Academy is to teach and encourage student involvement and expertise in the ever important and expanding world of digital technology. A collaboration of students, teachers, and community partners will work together to provide project-based learning, structured to enable students to practice and gain knowledge in applying digital arts technology to a wide range of subject areas and projects. The TDA Academy will teach creative contemporary career skills and the chance to demonstrate them with business and retail partners in the community as well as practical and effective communication and respect for self and others. The Academy emphasizes problem-solving, self-directed learning, quality production, working collaboratively, and the importance of a life-long commitment to contributing to one s community. Elk Grove High School possesses a long tradition of outstanding visual arts. The Elk Grove Visual Arts department prides itself on providing a well-rounded arts experience that prepares students for post-secondary education and career applications. Approximately ten years ago, the Visual Arts department evolved into a crossplatform, multimedia program that includes digital imaging, graphic design, and graphic art, while still maintaining the strong traditional art courses (ceramics, drawing, painting, and photography). With that evolution, emphasis shifted to student engagement in real world, project-based units, demonstrating core competencies during the completion of each project. By the start of the sophomore year, Academy students will choose a pathway (either Computer Graphics or Digital Photography) that they will begin to study in depth in order to learn the necessary skills for these applications. Each student will finish the Academy with his or her advanced projects archived into a portfolio that can be used to promote his or her technological proficiency upon graduating from high school. Digital Arts and Technology Academy Sample Courses Computers & Graphic Design 1 is a beginning class that all incoming Freshmen complete. This course is designed to introduce basic computer use and operation as well as the elements and principles of art and design. Individual and group workplace skills are emphasized and students also learn the basics of the design process from ideation through final production. Digital Art and Graphic Design allows students to study and practice several areas of contemporary graphic production and Photo illustration with a strong emphasis on computer-generated art and graphics. Photo 1 is an introductory course that covers an overview of the history of photography, the basic design elements, camera types, processing of black and white film, composition, projection and contact printing and types of photography such as portrait, action, close-up and still life as well as finishing prints for exhibition. Computers & Graphic Design 2 is an intermediate class that goes indepth into design process and design fundamentals such as composition, typography, design history, publication and corporate identity. The focus is on developing designer-client relationships and presentation skills. Digital Cinema is a hands-on course that is an introduction to digital video editing and movie making. Students will create stories on digital media using various programs such as imovie and Quicktime. College Digital Photo 11 (also known as EGHS Digital Art and Computer Graphics) Students will study and practice several areas of contemporary digital photography and illustration with a strong emphasis on computer-generated art and illustrations. College Photo 40 (also known as EGHS Photo II) This course continues development of skills learned in Photo 1. The students will improve previously learned skills in composing and shooting, developing and printing, mounting and preparing for exhibition. p a g e 0 2 w w w. e g h s d i g i t a l a r t s. c o m
