Elk Grove Unified School District s New Academy The commitment of Elk Grove High School s Technology and Digital Arts Academy is to teach and encourage student involvement and expertise in the ever important and expanding world of digital technology. A collaboration of students, teachers, and community partners will work together to provide project-based learning, structured to enable students to practice and gain knowledge in applying digital arts technology to a wide range of subject areas and projects. The TDA Academy will teach creative contemporary career skills and the chance to demonstrate them with business and retail partners in the community as well as practical and effective communication and respect for self and others. The Academy emphasizes problem-solving, self-directed learning, quality production, working collaboratively, and the importance of a life-long commitment to contributing to one s community. Elk Grove High School possesses a long tradition of outstanding visual arts. The Elk Grove Visual Arts department prides itself on providing a well-rounded arts experience that prepares students for post-secondary education and career applications. Approximately ten years ago, the Visual Arts department evolved into a crossplatform, multimedia program that includes digital imaging, graphic design, and graphic art, while still maintaining the strong traditional art courses (ceramics, drawing, painting, and photography). With that evolution, emphasis shifted to student engagement in real world, project-based units, demonstrating core competencies during the completion of each project. By the start of the sophomore year, Academy students will choose a pathway (either Computer Graphics or Digital Photography) that they will begin to study in depth in order to learn the necessary skills for these applications. Each student will finish the Academy with his or her advanced projects archived into a portfolio that can be used to promote his or her technological proficiency upon graduating from high school.
