Why teens shouldn t text while driving! By: Kelsey Ickes

What is the push to ban cell phone use and texting while driving? Driving distractions such as calls and texting contributed to nearly 1,000 crashes involving 17 and 18 year olds Every year 21 percent of fatal car crashes involve teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 are caused by the use of a cell phone, this rate is expected to increase by 4% every year. According to insurance companies for every 6 seconds of drive time a driver sending or receiving a text message spends 4.6 of those seconds with their eyes off the road The law firm included statistics based on Pennsylvania alone, in 2008 there were 1,298 cell phone related accidents, nine which resulted in death Almost 6,000 were killed and a half-million more were injured in crashes concerning driver distractions Researchers also say drivers who text are at least 20 times more likely to get in an accident than non-distracted drivers

This story is a controversial situation, some say this student s car accident was caused by texting while driving, and some say that it was not an issue of texting and driving. In 2010 Claysburg-Kimmel suffered the death of a very special classmate. A very special angel we all miss was born on April 19, 1993 and passed away on May 18, 2010. This student was on her way to Claysburg- Kimmel s band and chorus concert. The student was also a member of the school s cheerleading squad as well as a recipient of high academic honors throughout her years of school. This student had two brothers, she supported them in everything they did and was present at every sporting event even when she was not cheering. She was always her brothers little cheerleader. This young women was well liked not just by her friends and classmates, but also by teachers and faculty of Claysburg-Kimmel.

Losing someone so young, so spirited and well-known in the community strikes the hearts of those around. When someone is gone you can never bring them back. Teenagers today need to realize that you are not guaranteed tomorrow. She had so many great plans for herself and in the matter of five minutes she was taken from us. Teenagers also need to realize texting and driving is not worth it, you can hurt yourself and so many others! This student was my best friend, we grew up together and our birthdays are exactly two days apart. It s heartbreaking when it takes a tragedy like this to open your eyes and make you realize how important friends are. When you finally realize how much they mean to you and how important they are, it may be to late to let them know that and to spend as much time as possible with them. Teens today need to be thankful for the friends they have and pray that they never lose a friend. So teens, the next time you get into a car, think about everything that is important to you. Do you think texting while driving is really worth losing everything or everyone you care about. Would you really like to put your family through the possibly losing a loved one. Losing someone you love and care about is the hardest thing you will ever have to experience.

Give Clear Instructions- Give teen drivers simple, clear instructions not to use their cell phones while driving. According to many organizations, the easiest way to say it is, On the road, OFF the PHONE! Before your teens get their licenses, discuss with them that taking their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, could cost someone an injury or even death.

1.4 million: Crashes per year in the United States caused by drivers talking and texting on their cell phones 200,000: Crashes per year cause by texting and driving 812,000: Vehicles driven at any moment in the United States by someone on a cell phone $43 billion: Annual cost of crashes in the United States caused by cell phones 276.6 million: Wireless subscribers in the United States as of June 2009 2.23 trillion: Minutes of cell phone use in the United States per year 1.36 trillion: Text messages sent per year in the United States In Pennsylvania, there are over 6,000 distracted driver accidents each year involving drivers using a handheld cell phone

In the city of Philadelphia, the fine for talking on a handheld cell phone while driving, bicycling, or skateboarding is $75 for the first violation In the state if New Jersey it is illegal to talk on a handheld cell phone or text while driving. NO moving violations points are issued, but drivers are fined $100

A recent survey finds that 71 percent of people between the ages of 18 and 49 admit they text or talk on the phone while driving. If you think you can text, talk, and drive at the same time, you cannot! The message you can not wait to send could kill! Distracted driving is an epidemic that is sweeping through our country, claiming lives and destroying families.

I pledge to make my car a No Phone Zone. Beginning right now, I will do my part to help put an end to distracted driving by committing to drive as responsibly as I can!

In September 2008, a Los Angeles commuter train conductor missed a red light while sending and receiving more than 40 text messages. His packed train collided head-on with a freight train, injuring 135 people. The conductor and 24 others were killed, making it the second worst commuter train crash in U.S. history. Weeks later, a school bus carrying 21 students was rear-ended by and 18 wheel semi truck. The bus was pushed more than 200 feet before bursting into flames. Twenty students escaped, but 13-year-old Margay Schee was killed. The truck driver admitted he had been texting and hadn t seen that the bus was stopped.

Have you ever sat at a stoplight and counted the number of drivers who are talking on the phone? Now imagine how many are taking their eyes off the road to text, and how many of them are inexperienced teen drivers. The statistics show that texting is more dangerous than talking on the phone and even drunk driving, as the info graphic illustrates. Yet so many people text while driving and assume it isn t as dangerous. Laws are coming up faster than a police cruiser in the rearview mirror to stop texting behind the wheel and it is a GOOD thing. We can not sit by idly while careless drivers continue to cause car accidents because they couldn t put down their cell phones.
