Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal, University of Applied Science ( Fachhochschule ) Statistics, Diploma (FH) Fachhochschule : German speciality, result of the educational policy debates held in the 1960s: demand for qualified personnel with the capacity to solve practical tasks on the basis of an academic training. Special Features: practical orientation and shorter studies. Tight organisation of the degree courses, teaching in small groups. Research primarily directed towards practical requirements, largely applications-based. Degree courses end with a special diplom degree.

Bologna Declaration 1999 1. Adoption of a system of easily readable and comparable degrees 2. Adoption of a system essentially based on two cycles 3. Establishment of a system of credits 4. Promotion of mobility 5. Promotion of European co-operation in quality assurance 6. Promotion of the European dimension in higher education

SOCRATES / ERASMUS Socrates: European programme for education First phase: 1995 1999, Second phase (Socrates II): 2000 2006 Budget of 1850 million Euro for seven-year period, (among others: grants to study or teach in another country) Socrates consists of eight actions: 1. Comenius: school education 2. Erasmus: higher education 3. Grundtvig: adult education and other education pathways 4. Lingua: learning and teaching of European languages 5. Minerva: information and communication technologies in education 6. Observation and innovation of education systems and policies 7. Joint actions with other European programmes 8. Accompanying measures. Changes from phase I to phase II concern thematic orientation of certain actions and some of the administrative procedures.

Erasmus Students: - offers the possibility of studying in another European country for a period of between 3 and 12 months. - time spent in the host country must be fully recognized by the home institution. - there must be prior agreement between the universities involved before a person can benefit from the Erasmus scheme. - special DAAD-programme for German students, if there is no Socratesagreement or other requirements are not fulfilled: Socrates Free-Mover Teachers: supports - teacher exchanges - joint preparation of courses - intensive programmes (e.g. parts of summer university programmes) - thematic networks

Doctoral Studies Traditional German system: doctoral degrees awarded after independent research under supervision of a lecturer and the defense of a thesis Since 1998: also more structured, cooperative forms of doctoral study Induced in the Berlin Communiqué 2003: Doctoral studies as 3rd Cycle of Bologna Process - formalized doctoral programmes - research plus training program ( lectures, seminars,...) - cooperative and formalized monitoring of progress of studies and doctoral project - transparent criteria for admmission to doctoral studies and selection of candidates - time of doctoral study. Bologna Process idea: 3+2+3=8

Future Question: different types of PhD ( professional and scientific )? Interesting for us: binational doctoral programmes, jointly supervised by two different higher education institutions, e.g. Joint Declaration by the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK) and the Conferenza dei Rettori delle Università Italiane (CRUI) on Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Theses ( co-tutelle de thèse ), Berlin, 16 and 17 November 2000

University of Göttingen, Centre for Statistics (ZfS) International and interdisciplinary three-year PhD-program in Applied Statistics & Empirical Methods Cooperation of seven faculties: Agricultual Science, Biology, Economics, Forest Science, Mathematics, Medicine, Social Science.
