BMW EfficientDynamics Less emissions. More driving pleasure. The most sustainable car manufacturer in the world: the BMW Group has now been ranked sector leader in the respected Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for a remarkable seventh year in a row. The company has also received a host of accolades for its unique BMW Effi cientdynamics programme. It was, for example, the fi rst to win the Grüne Lenkrad (Green Steering Wheel), one of the most important awards for environmental protection in the automotive arena. This, for BMW, is simply further motivation to continue in the pursuit of visionary ideas. With BMW i, for example, clear sustainability targets have already been established for the early strategy and design phases. BMW Effi cientdynamics. LESS FUEL CONSUMPTION. MORE DYNAMICS. The goal of EfficientDynamics is to combine efficiency with driving pleasure and to continuously move closer towards sustainability and emissions-free mobility. Intelligent energy management is one significant step in this direction. This, along with lightweight construction plus aerodynamics and engine efficiency measures mean that sustainability can actually be experienced today. What s more, every BMW features the latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies as standard. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the Auto Start/Stop function and ECO PRO mode are just a few of many examples. As for our innovative drive systems, we have developed BMW ActiveHybrid technology, the BMW Hydrogen with hydrogen drive and the electrically powered BMW ActiveE. Other new concepts for electro-mobility include the BMW i (Megacity Vehicle) and the BMW i. These are based on existing BMW EfficientDynamics measures combined with innovations in intelligent lightweight construction, such as the use of carbon. The reward for all this engineering enterprise is a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions united with enhanced performance and even more driving pleasure.

THE FINE ART OF SWITCHING OFF. When an engine isn t running, it neither consumes fuel nor produces emissions. Which is the reason why the Auto Start/Stop function switches off the engine when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill (at traffi c lights, for example). The engine starts automatically in fractions of a second when the footbrake is released (automatic) or the clutch is engaged (manual). Auto Start/Stop is standard in many BMW models and plays a central role in reducing overall consumption and CO output. www.bmw.com/autostartstop Aerodynamics. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. Many athletes nowadays wear skin-tight gear designed to reduce drag. Aerodynamics is also a key element in ensuring that a vehicle s motion is as energy-effi cient as possible. That s why we developed a feature called the Air Curtain for the BMW Series Coupé and Convertible, as well as the new BMW Series Saloon. This new technology reduces wind resistance at the wheel arches. Air taken in through vents in the front apron accelerates as the ducts conducting it narrow. The air is then led to the wheel arches, where it exits, covering the outer faces of the wheels like a curtain. Air vent control, fi tted in many BMW models, fulfi ls a similar purpose. It reduces aerodynamic drag, especially at high speeds, by closing the air vents at the front of the radiator according to the driving situation and engine temperature. The engine management system continuously monitors whether the engine requires cooling air and opens or closes the vents accordingly. The benefi ts are twofold: a shorter engine warm-up phase and reduced fuel consumption. www.bmw.com/aircurtain www.bmw.com/airventcontrol The Air Curtain invisible and incredibly effi cient.
Brake Energy Regeneration. FULL OF ENERGY. EVEN WHEN BRAKING. Every time you brake, you release kinetic energy energy which for a long time was not capitalised upon by vehicle design. Brake Energy Regeneration uses this previously wasted potential to reclaim electricity from the momentum produced when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator or brakes. This power is then used to recharge the battery. This intelligent energy management system frees up the generator and makes permanent running of the alternator redundant. As a result, fuel consumption is reduced and performance increased the essence of the BMW Effi cientdynamics philosophy. www.bmw.com/brakeenergyregeneration 123d Coupé 5.1 l/100 km (134 g CO 2 /km) 150 kw (204 hp) Modern lightweight engineering. The Life module in BMW i vehicles is made solely from carbon fi bre reinforced plastic (CFRP). Intelligent lightweight construction. LESS WEIGHT. MORE DRIVING PLEASURE. The less weight there is to move, the less energy is consumed. Since the s, BMW has consistently applied this thinkin to vehicle construction and constantly improved upon it. There is a question that perpetually confronts BMW engineers, however: where does a reduction in weight make sense and where not? The answer lies in intelligent lightweight construction. This involves the carefully targeted use of ultra-light materials such as magnesium, aluminium and carbon fi bre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The latter is perfect for vehicle construction; stable like steel, yet around half the weight. The use of the high-tech material CFRP in large-scale vehicle production as in the BMW i and BMW i is, to date, unique. It ensures longer range, optimum safety and characteristic BMW performance. It also guarantees a very long lifespan. www.bmw.com/lightweightconstruction Traditionally the engine supplies the battery with electrical energy consuming fuel in the process. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance. LESS FRICTION. LESS FUEL CONSUMPTION. While the car is in motion, the tyres are constantly changing shape, using up energy and fuel. That s why BMW uses tyres with reduced rolling-resistance. Optimised tyre construction combined with the use of special materials in the road treads and side walls minimises deformation, or fl exing, thereby reducing fuel consumption. www.bmw.com/tyres In a BMW the battery is mostly recharged using kinetic energy. 12 13
It doesn t take long to achieve your fi rst bonus kilometres once ECO PRO mode is activated. Bonus range gained is shown in the on-board computer along with a small fuel pump symbol. The potential for saving fuel in city traffi c is particularly high in ECO PRO mode. Adopting a driving style that emphasises anticipation and restrained acceleration, for instance, leads to excellent economy and only minimal loss of time. With ECO PRO tips, you will also learn valuable lessons about more effi cient driving on trunk roads and motorways. Seeing the bonus range in the on-board computer will inspire you to drive even more effi ciently, so you can cover the greatest possible distance on a single tank. The BMW Effi cientdynamics display in the rev counter, in conjunction with the optional extended instrument cluster, is also of particular help here. A blue bar indicates the range where fuel consumption remains at its optimum. There is a welcome side benefi t with ECO PRO, too, because it promotes a calmer driving style. Optimum Shift Indicator. TAKING EFFICIENCY UP A GEAR. BMW innovations always come at the right time. Like for example the Optimum Shift Indicator. It determines the optimal moment to change gears and indicates the most appropriate gear in the driver s direct line of vision. As is characteristic of BMW, the system works intelligently for example recognising the powerful acceleration needed when overtaking and adjusting its recommendations to suit the higher speed. www.bmw.com/optimumshiftindicator THE BMW PRINCIPLE. Researching and developing sustainable solutions. of this collaboration, from as far back as the late s, is the BMW / Coupé. Not only was it one of the most unusual cars of its day, but its low weight also meant it was one of the fastest on German motorways. With its hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, the open-topped BMW reached a top speed of km/h. Electric Power Steering. STEER TOWARD EFFICIENCY. Every turn of the steering wheel requires energy. But why should energy be used when the wheel isn t turning? That s why BMW Electric Power Steering is only active when it s needed. In contrast with conventional hydraulic steering systems, this BMW solution only uses energy while an actual steering manoeuvre is underway. When the steering wheel is static for example, when driving at high speed along the motorway the electric motor is inactive. www.bmw.com/powersteering The BMW Group is regarded as the global front-runner among car makers when it comes to dynamics, effi ciency and sustainability. This leading position is the result of decades of research and thousands of inventions. And nowhere are these developments more apparent than in the BMW Museum. One example is the BMW racing saloon and you can see a spectacular replica of its intricate space frame mounted like a work of art in the House of Technology. The original structure of was a load-bearing framework of magnesium alloy and weighed just kilogrammes. So even then, BMW saw lightweight construction as a key factor in creating effi ciency and sportiness. Directly opposite the BMW Museum, visitors enter BMW Welt. The vehicles on display here demonstrate the achievements of BMW engineers in the areas of sustainability, efficiency and driving pleasure. These are, of course, central principles of BMW Effi cientdynamics and there are many exhibits and animations in BMW Welt devoted to the multi-award-winning strategy. Many inventions and innovations are developed behind the scenes. But thanks to the BMW Museum and BMW Welt, this engineering ingenuity is brought squarely into the spotlight. www.bmw-museum.com www.bmw-welt.com When the steering wheel is static no energy is expended. The electric engine is only activated when the steering wheel is turned. Head for the Technology section on the lower fl oor of the building and you will fi nd a recreation of a wind tunnel and learn how the close interaction between aerodynamics engineers and designers has infl uenced automotive design. ENERGY IS OUR MOST VALUABLE ASSET. Patrick Müller is responsible for the BMW edrive technology in the BMW ActiveE and the BMW i models. In this interview, he explains the special characteristics and features of the electric motors, high-performance batteries and electronics. He also offers insight on how BMW EfficientDynamics technology has been incorporated into the new BMW i models. Engines and drivetrains are of prime importance for BMW. Is this also the case for electric vehicles? This is one of the main reasons why we are developing these units mainly in-house. For many people, BMW stands for highperformance, highly efficient engines. How do the BMW electric motors fit this picture? The requirements for the BMW i3 and BMW i8 are just as demanding as for all the other BMW models. Which is why we are building small, light and powerful engines that also deliver maximum effi ciency. How do they compare with traditional engines? The technology is very different. However, the driving experience remains typically BMW. We are building the most dynamic and agile electric cars with one or two little differences from those with conventional drivetrains. In an electric car, the seamless availability of power right from a standing start is defi nitely something special. A fi rst impression of this is provided by our BMW ActiveE. It already embodies all the elements of our future power system, such as motor, batteries and performance electronics. What do drivers think about the driving range of the BMW ActiveE? Feedback throughout the study has been positive. Most people manage very well with the 160-kilometre range. I actually commute 70 kilometres a day in my BMW ActiveE and it s great. Clearly, the effi cient use of electric energy is of paramount importance. For this reason, we are planning a special ECO PRO mode for the BMW i3. Initial experiences with the BMW ActiveE have seen reach extend by about 25 per cent. Do the developments from BMW EfficientDynamics assist in this? Naturally, we do benefi t from the well-known BMW measures such as low rolling resistance tyres and energy management for all the auxiliary equipment. But we re doing a great deal more and, for us, every watt counts. In many situations, for example, our vehicles completely recuperate brake energy. Essentially, we are pushing the limits across the board to maximise the benefi ts of Effi cientdynamics. What are the most pioneering aspects of BMW i? With regard to lightweight construction and electric drive systems, we are at the forefront both within BMW and for the whole of the car industry. Our bodywork consists mainly of carbon and, at the moment, you can t build a lighter car. In tandem with the high-effi ciency drive system, every kilogram we reduce saves energy and increases range. Environmental protection is important to future customers, which is why the BMW i3 creates no emissions while it s being driven. But how do you address sustainability in the development programme? For BMW i models, the global warming potential is at least one third below that of comparable internal combustion-engined vehicles. This is due to sustainable production and the use of recycled and renewable raw materials. The expenditure of energy for producing aluminium, for instance, is very high. This is why we almost exclusively use recycled aluminium, even in the structures for the housing of the electric motor and the batteries. There aren t many people who have driven as many electric-car kilometres as you. What has been the most significant insight? The absolute quiet in the car is very relaxing. At the same time, however, it offers a genuinely dynamic driving experience. www.bmw-i.com www.bwm.com/activee BMW ActiveE. DEVELOPED TO ELECTRIFY. The completely electric-driven BMW ActiveE is the fi rst emissions-free vehicle from BMW and is built in a short production run as part of a pilot project. The experience gained will contribute to the development of the BMW i. The ActiveE is based on the new BMW Series Coupé and equipped with an electric motor with maximum power of kw ( hp) and Nm of torque. It also, of course, offers all the driving pleasure typical of BMW. BMW edrive technology, comprising an electric motor, a lithium-ion high-performance battery and intelligent motor control, ensures impressive acceleration from a standing start. This makes the BMW ActiveE both extremely agile and fascinating to drive. The vehicle s lithium-ion high-voltage batteries are intelligently distributed around the entire vehicle, so there is no loss of space. Indeed, the luggage compartment offers a generous capacity of litres, while the car keeps its full four-seat confi guration. What s more, the BMW ActiveE only needs charging up after about kilometres of travel thanks to average power consumption of. kwh/km. With BMW i, the BMW Group has adopted a holistic approach, with tailor-made vehicle design, clear focus on sustainability through the entire value chain and a series of supplementary mobility services. In short, it is redefi ning the understanding of individual, electric-powered mobility. Following a central theme less emissions and more driving pleasure BMW i is developing progressive new vehicle concepts and technologies for the mobility of tomorrow, while also embracing a large number of existing BMW EfficientDynamics technologies. The BMW i concept is tomorrow s ultimate city car and the BMW i concept represents the sports car of the future. The BMW i will be available in production form in, shortly followed by the BMW i. BMW i concept. THE SPORTS CAR OF THE FUTURE. No contradiction: an emotionally charged sports car with the consumption values of a small car. This is the BMW i concept. One of its secrets is its intelligent construction in carbon fi bre reinforced plastic (CFRP) as strong as steel, but about per cent lighter. The Life module in BMW i vehicles is made solely from CFRP, guaranteeing generous range, optimum safety, typical BMW driving performance and a very long service life. The BMW i evolved from the BMW Vision Effi cientdynamics. And with its BMW edrive PlugIn hybrid concept, it is essentially two cars in one. Thanks to its electric motor (front drive) it can reach over km/h on electric power. But in combination with the high performance BMW TwinPower turbo engine (rear-wheel drive), with its output of kw, the BMW becomes a thoroughbred sports car. Overall system output is kw ( hp), which delivers acceleration from zero to km/h in under fi ve seconds and consumption in the EU cycle of less than three litres per km fi gures that have never been attained by a combustionengine vehicle of this performance stature. Thanks to its large lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a mains socket, the BMW i concept can achieve a range of up to km in purely electric operation. In addition, the + -seater has suffi cient space for four adults, so it is also very practical in daily life. 20 21

THE MOST DYNAMIC AND INTELLIGENT WAY TO DRIVE A HYBRID. Hybrid technology is one way of achieving lower fuel consumption and reducing emissions. But only in a BMW does this technology also mean more driving pleasure. The word hybrid describes the combination of two drive methods which are, generally, a combustion engine and an electric motor. BMW ActiveHybrid technology is precisely and appropriately tuned to each model. The fi rst was the the Series, available as a BMW ActiveHybrid since. With this mild hybrid, BMW has achieved great day-to-day usability combined with an increase in effi ciency of up to per cent. Two new saloons, the BMW ActiveHybrid and BMW ActiveHybrid, represent the next generation of BMW hybrids. These are known as full hybrids and can cover up to four kilometres under purely electric power and, hence, totally free of emissions. The unique combination of a BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and the electric motor in the BMW ActiveHybrid and BMW ActiveHybrid also provides perceptibly more dynamism and demand for fuel reduced by a double-digit percentage. The electric motor draws its power from a high-performance lithium-ion battery with an impressively long service life. It even comes with a special certifi cate guaranteeing its performance for the fi rst, km over a maximum of fi ve years. Additionally, intelligent energy management ensures that excess energy is either recuperated and stored or used directly to power the vehicle as required. It also optimises the use of kinetic energy according to navigation and location data and the route profi le, thus ensuring the most effi cient interplay of combustion engine and electric motor. For example, when the system detects a hill and a descent in the route profi le, the engine is given maximum assistance by the electric motor on the way up, while the surplus energy generated on the drive down is fed back into the highperformance battery. www.bmw.com/activehybrid Expected availability from /, values, to be confi rmed, are determined on the basis of the ECE test cycle: < g CO /km and <. l/ km.
