Stormy weather? We ll guide you through...

Because running a business isn t always plain sailing.

David Rubin & Partners specialises in corporate and personal recovery, insolvency, forensic accounting and litigation support. Our experience covers all industry sectors and all sizes of business. We are experienced in every aspect of turnaround and the rescue of underperforming businesses. Where a rescue is not possible, a full range of insolvency procedures will always be considered. The firm s team is led by seven partners, each of whom follows a hands on policy and brings his own particular skills to every assignment. 1

Through our many years of experience we understand the traumas faced by creditors, company directors and individuals who find themselves under extreme financial pressure David Rubin SENIOR PARTNER David founded the practice of David Rubin & Partners in 1984 to focus on business recovery and forensic litigation support. Since then he has concentrated almost exclusively on under-performing businesses and has become a well-recognised and respected figure in the recovery industry. David regularly writes and lectures on turnaround issues and is heavily involved in training within the profession. He is a council member of INSOL Europe and a former council member of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3). He has chaired the R3 Education, Courses and Conferences Committee as well as the Smaller Practice Issues Committee for both R3 and INSOL International. David s primary role is to ensure the quality of service at the practice, ensuring that all members of his team demonstrate a high level of professionalism and technical expertise and that all legal and other regulations are complied with. He enjoys the challenge of business rescue and his work often involves litigation and alternative dispute resolution. In his spare time, David s hobbies include tennis, skiing, restoring classic cars and playing the piano. 2

Paul Appleton MANAGING PARTNER Paul is the driving force behind David Rubin & Partners Holborn office, which was established in 2002. His energy and perspective have been vital to the success of the operation and had previously led to his election to The Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3) Class of 2000, a body set up to reshape the future of the insolvency profession. Our advice is clear, impartial and unambiguous, and is designed to protect the interests of all those involved Since his qualification as a chartered accountant in 1991, Paul has overseen the turnaround of many troubled companies. His experience in the recovery industry has been guided by a commitment to the three R s of R3: rescue, recovery and renewal. Paul became a partner of the practice in 1995 and has been managing partner since 2002. He is actively involved in education and training within the profession and has lectured regularly on many R3 courses and conferences. Paul has a keen interest in both the music and film industries and has first-hand experience of life s ups and downs, having supported Arsenal Football Club as a season ticket holder since the age of four! 3

We are committed to finding the best way forward for the business or the individual using the benefits of turnaround if possible Asher Miller PARTNER Asher is a strong proponent of the rescue culture and has gained a reputation for striving to ensure the survival of a struggling business wherever possible. His experience includes not only corporate insolvencies and closures but also mid-corporate reviews and reconstructions across many industry sectors. Asher is a fellow of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals ( R3 ) and the Insolvency Practitioners Association. He currently sits on the London Region Committee, having previously sat on R3 s Education Courses and Conferences Committee. He joined David Rubin & Partners as a partner in January 2003, having previously specialised in corporate recovery and insolvency at PricewaterhouseCoopers for ten years. He has a degree in accounting and finance and is both a chartered accountant and a licensed insolvency practitioner. Asher is married and enjoys spending his leisure time with his family. He also enjoys running, skiing, playing football and, like Paul Appleton, is a keen supporter of Arsenal Football Club. 4

The firm has saved many companies from going under.

We have helped companies of all sizes across many different industry sectors.

Henry Lan PARTNER Henry is a Chartered Accountant and has held an Insolvency Practitioners licence since 1990. He is a member of both the Insolvency Practitioners Association and the Association of Business Recovery Professionals ( R3 ). Whatever the recommended course of action, we always ensure fairness to all parties and the maximum return to creditors Henry s expertise in taxation and forensic accounting brings depth and strength to the services offered by David Rubin & Partners. His accountancy and tax experience dates back to 1975 when he managed a substantial portfolio of personal and corporate tax clients at a long-established London firm of Chartered Accountants. Henry also spent a few years as head of finances of a major food distribution company. In 1985 Henry helped to develop David Rubin & Partners, where he took responsibility for the tax and audit departments. He also took an interest in the firm s insolvency and rescue department while taking charge of the taxation side of insolvency. His wide experience has proved invaluable to David Rubin & Partners work, particularly in forensic and litigation support. Henry is interested in information technology, travel and sport. 7

Rod Reeken PARTNER We never forget that we are dealing with real people in real situations Rod works closely with Paul Appleton in the Holborn office. Originally from New Zealand, he has lived in the UK for over 25 years and has been a partner of the practice since 2003. Rod has always been interested in the human aspect of accountancy. In New Zealand, his work as an Inland Revenue inspector took him out on the road and provided first-hand experience of the many factors that affect business performance. When his career moved to the UK he again worked directly with business owners in his position as auditor for a UK accounting firm. Since joining David Rubin and Partners in 1996, Rod has specialised in both corporate and personal insolvency, working closely with the management of insolvent companies to effect turnarounds where possible. Rod has two daughters and when he has spare time he enjoys reading, politics, industrial architecture and exploration of the British countryside. 8

Our partners have the experience and skills to take the helm when it s needed.

We guide our clients to calmer waters.

Stephen Katz PARTNER Stephen Katz is the most recent member of the team at David Rubin & Partners and is based at the Holborn office. Having qualified as a chartered accountant with HW Fisher & Company in 1988, Stephen spent three years in audit before heading up the firm s business development and investigation team, specialising in business acquisitions, due diligence and prelending reviews. We are proud to achieve excellence in the service we provide for each individual case, whether we are dealing with a major multinational or a small business In the early 1990s, Stephen assisted in setting up a dedicated insolvency team at HW Fisher & Company. He qualified as a licensed insolvency practitioner in April 1995 and subsequently became Head of Insolvency. Stephen has considerable experience across a wide range of industry sectors and has acted in a number of cross border insolvency cases, resulting in him undertaking work in Europe, Sub-Sahara Africa, USA and the Bahamas. Stephen is married with two children and has four dogs, but he still manages to find time to practise two styles of karate at black belt level. 11

Paul Cooper PARTNER Paul joined David Rubin & Partners in 2011. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant at Price Waterhouse in 1994, Paul spent 15 years in Investment Banking, holding senior managerial positions in the Equity divisions of UBS, as a Managing Director in European Equities and HSBC Bank plc, where he was Global Head of Cash Trading, Head of Emerging Market Equities and was a member of the Global Equities Management Committee. We bring an entrepreneurial approach to our assignments to find the optimal solution for all stakeholders Paul became a licensed insolvency practitioner in April 2014 and was a national first place prize-winner at CPI in 2012. He is a commercially minded business restructuring professional, who brings a unique background of chartered accountancy, investment banking and Company debt and equity funding to his restructuring assignments, in order to reach the optimal outcome for all stakeholders. Paul is married with three children and has a lifelong passion for playing Texas Hold em poker. 12

We have an experienced and professional team supporting our partners in each of our offices Chris Caton PARTNER - PRACTICE DIRECTOR Chris operates at the heart of the firm. He works from all three of our offices and is responsible for the smooth management of caseload across the practice. In addition to his responsibility for staff development and performance, Chris works alongside the partners and staff to ensure that procedures are correctly adhered to, the practice is managed efficiently and that David Rubin & Partners clients receive a consistently high level of service. Chris attributes much of his organisational ability to his military training. He spent twenty-five years with the Coldstream Guards, where he received not only the long service and good conduct medal, but also, in the New Years Honours list of 1990, the British Empire Medal. His ability to remain calm and manage people working under pressure remains second to none. In his spare time, Chris is interested in theatre and historical literature.
