Eastern Medıterranean Unıversıty Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), the oldest university in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, is an international university with a population of about 14.000 students from 70 different countries. The university campus stretches over a spacious and beautifully planned area on the outskirts of the charming ancient port city of Gazimağusa (Famagusta). EMU s commitment to excellence in teaching and research has attracted highly qualified teaching faculty from around the world including USA, UK, Canada, Turkey, Russia, France, Poland and other European countries. The university has an outstanding library, modern lecture notes halls and classroom facilities with computerized systems that enable students to study in an interactive, technologically advanced environment. Lıfe ın Gazimagusa - Gazimağusa offers its visitors unspoiled historical beauty, as well as the facilities of a modern city with a wide variety of restaurants and shops. Some of the finest beaches of North Cyprus are only 3 to 4 kilometers away from the University. North Cyprus has a wonderful Mediterranean climate, where winters are mild; summers are warm with plenty of sunshine all throughout the year. The crime rate in North Cyprus is lower than any other European Country which makes it particularly a safe place for international students to live.

Program Descrıptıon G raduate programs in the Physics Department started in 1989 (MS) and 1993 (PhD) respectively. As an indicator of quality we have graduated only 35 MS and 5 PhD students in total. The active research areas in Physics can be summarized as follows a) General Relativity and Cosmology b) Quantum Theory c) Physics Education d) Quantum Optics and Biomedical Applications In order to prepare our students for a solid theoretical background we offer the following compulsory courses i. Classical Mechanics ii. Classical Electrodynamics iii. Methods of Mathematical Physics iv. Quantum Mechanics In addition, we offer advanced elective courses such as v. General Relativity vi. Cosmology vii. Selected Special Topics The students have the freedom to take additional graduate courses from the Mathematics Dept. and a course entitled Research Methods as a non-technical elective. There are no restrictions on the subject matters of the graduate projects but expectedly they address challenging problems. Black Holes, Cosmological solutions for Einstein equations and non-hermitian Quantum Theory are just a few examples. Candidates for the Master of Science degree in Physics are required to complete eight courses (21 credit-hours) and a dissertation. The program consists of four required core courses: PHYS 511 Mathematical Methods For Engineers and Scientists I, PHYS 521 Classical Mechanics I, PHYS 522 Electromagnetic Theory I, PHYS 551 Quantum Mechanics I. In addition, the students must complete PHYS 598 Seminar and three elective courses in Physics. Candidates for the Doctor of Science degree in Physics are required to complete seven courses (21 credit-hours) and a dissertation. The program consists of four required core courses: PHYS 611 Mathematical Methods For Engineers and Scientists II, PHYS 621 Classical Mechanics II, PHYS 622 Electromagnetic Theory II, PHYS 652 Quantum Mechanics II. In addition, the students must complete three elective courses in Physics. After completing all the required courses, one is required to pass four qualifying examinations in Physics, and the area in which they have chosen their dissertation topic. After successfully

completing these examinations, one must complete a PhD dissertation and have one article published from the dissertation in an internationally refereed journal listed in the Science Citation Index or Science Citation Index Expanded to quality for a PhD degree. Curr culum Required Courses MS PHYS 500 Thesis Guidance PHYS 511 Mathematical Methods For Engineers and Scientists I PHYS 521 Classical Mechanics I PHYS 522 Electromagnetic Theory I PHYS 551 Quantum Mechanics I PHYS 598 Seminar Required Courses PhD PHYS 600 Thesis Guidance PHYS 611 Mathematical Methods For Engineers and Scientists II PHYS 621 Classical Mechanics II PHYS 622 Electromagnetic Theory II PHYS 652 Quantum Mechanics II Elective Courses PHYS 503 Selected Topics in Physics PHYS 504 Selected Topics in Physics PHYS 531 Statistical Mechanics PHYS 532 Special Relativity PHYS 541 Selected Topics in Physics Education Research I PHYS 542 Special Topics in Physics Education II PHYS 579 Biomedical Optics PHYS 581 Condensed Matter Physics I PHYS 601 Theoretical Physics Seminar I PHYS 602 Theoretical Physics Seminar II PHYS 603 Special Topics in General Relativity I PHYS 604 Special Topics in General Relativity II PHYS 605 Special Topics in General Relativity III PHYS 606 Special Topics in General Relativity IV PHYS 607 Special Topics in General Relativity V PHYS 608 Selected Topics in Statistical Physics PHYS 609 Selected Topics in Quantum Mechanics PHYS 610 Special Topics in General Relativity VI PHYS 632 Introduction to General Relativity PHYS 653 Quantum Field Theory PHYS 681 Condensed Matter Physics II PHYS 683 Semiconductor Physics

Areas of Specıalızatıon T he active research areas in Physics can be summarized as follows a) General Relativity and Cosmology b) Quantum Theory c) Physics Education d) Quantum Optics and Biomedical Applications Focusing on the graduate program MS, our departments have well equipped research facilities. Our limited number of research and part-time assistantships aim to provide financial support for the students. Each office accommodates two assistants with full facilities. Our assistants teach in the Labs and tutorial sessions to gain experiences as prospective teachers. For every MS student we provide an up-to-date PC. To serve freshmen students with basic principles and laboratory techniques at introductory level, we have two standard general Physics laboratories. Our limited number of research and parttime assistantships aim to provide financial support for the students. Each office accommodates two assistants with full facilities. Our assistants teach in the Labs and tutorial sessions to gain experiences as prospective teachers.
