Neath Port Talbot Newsletter May 2013 Inside this issue: Glyncorrwg cycle shop and café is back on track thanks to Workways (Page 2) Neath family all find jobs with help from Workways (Page 3) Contact us: Address: Workways, Sandfields Young Business Centre, Port Talbot, SA12 7PT Tel: 01639 684250 Web: www.workways.co.uk

Glyncorrwg cycle shop and café is back on track thanks to Workways Skyline Cycles and Café, a Glyncorrwg based business, has benefitted from a variety of support from the EU-backed South West Workways project. With the downturn in the economy and frequent cycle track closures in the Afan valley caused by sudden oak death, Steve Moorwood s 9 year old cycle shop and café business had been hit hard. Having contacted Workways, an EU-backed employment project, Steve accessed a range of support which helped his company to weather the storm. Leah Squibbs and Steve Moorwood Steve said There was always someone from Workways there to offer us encouragement in the down times. They were very positive about what we do. As well as receiving assistance with the recruitment of 6 members of staff, Workways helped Steve to access ReAct funding for employees who had been previously made redundant. Steve was also put in contact with the NPT Business Development Team from whom he received marketing support. Steve said Workways hasn t just helped us to recruit new members of staff; they ve supported us with a whole host of things. Workways always put us in contact with the right people. They know what support is available and who to ask. One new member of the Skyline team recruited through Workways is 25 year old Leah Squibbs from Glyncorrwg. Having been made redundant from her previous job, Leah was notified about a vacancy at the Skyline Café shortly after signing up for the employment project. She was delighted to successfully apply for the job. Leah said Workways got me a job straight away. They helped me to buy a new uniform and access REACT funding so I could get the necessary certificates to work in the café. I wouldn t have got this job without their help. Councillor Ali Thomas, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said It is excellent to hear more news of the support which Workways is providing to local businesses and residents of Neath Port Talbot. South West Workways works closely with local businesses, helping them with their recruitment. Workways supports these companies by advertising vacancies to its pool of job ready participants, shortlisting candidates, organising recruitment days and exploring business support avenues. Thank you all and very well done. Phone - 01639 684250 2

Neath family all find jobs with help from Workways Three people from the same family have found permanent jobs in quick succession thanks to the help of the South West Workways project. Partners Karen Thomas and Tony Darvell and Karen s son Jacob, all of whom hail from Neath, have found work with a variety of local companies. Workways, which is backed with 12.6 million from the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government, provided the trio with a range of support including job search assistance, help with CVs and applications, and access to training and temporary jobs. Tony, forty five years of age, had been unemployed for ten years caring for his mother who passed away last year. He had no recent work experience and no qualifications. With the support of Pictured left to right Tony Darvell, Jacob Williams and Karen Thomas Workways, Tony found work as an operative with Derwen Group, a Neath Abbey based licensed waste transfer station and manufacturer of recycled aggregates. Tony said We ve got a six year old daughter so having a job has made a big difference. I ve got money in my pocket to buy her the things she needs for school and also spoil her a bit too. Having seen the help that her partner Tony was getting from Workways, Karen signed herself up for the project too. She had been made redundant from her job in a coffee shop and had been applying for a number of vacancies without success. Workways helped rebuild Karen s confidence and found her a job at Nu Cofi, a Neath based coffee shop. The part time hours were ideal as they allowed the couple to both work without any childcare issues. Karen said My Workways mentor Deb was fantastic. She was always there to talk to. Nu Coffee has been really supportive as well. Karen s son Jacob was the last member of the family to sign up for Workways. Since leaving school in 2011, he had undertaken various one month traineeships but had been unable to secure a permanent job. Workways supported Jacob to attend a course with SkillWales where he gained experience in a variety of trades, qualified for a site safety card and received a welcome boost in confidence. At the end of the course, he was delighted to be offered a job as a labourer with BDT construction. Only one month after signing up for Workways, Jacob had secured permanent employment. Jacob said I was landed to get a job so quickly. I m happy to be working with BDT. Councillor Ali Thomas, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council said It s excellent to hear news of 3 members of the same family who have all found jobs with the help of Workways. It s a fine example of the variety of support the project can offer. Visit www.workways.co.uk 3

Siop feicio a chaffi Glyncorrwg nôl ar ben ffordd o ganlyniad i gymorth gan Weithffyrdd Mae Beiciau a Chaffi Skyline, busnes yng Nglyncorrwg, wedi elwa o amrywiaeth o gymorth gan brosiect Gweithffyrdd y De- Orllewin sy'n cael ei gefnogi gan yr UE. O ganlyniad i'r dirywiad yn yr economi a chau nifer o lwybrau beicio yn rheolaidd yn nyffryn Afan a achoswyd gan farwolaeth nifer o goed derw, effeithiwyd yn fawr ar fusnes siop feicio a chaffi 9 mlwydd oed Steve Moorwood. Ar ôl cysylltu â Gweithffyrdd, prosiect cyflogaeth sy'n cael ei gefnogi gan yr UE, llwyddodd Steve i amrywiaeth o gefnogaeth a helpodd ei gwmni i frwydro ymlaen. Leah Squibbs a Steve Moorwood Dywedodd Steve, "Roedd rhywun o Gweithffyrdd yno i'n cefnogi bob tro roedd cyfnod caled. Roeddent yn gadarnhaol iawn am yr hyn rydym yn ei wneud." Yn ogystal â derbyn cymorth gyda recriwtio 6 aelod o staff, gwnaeth Gweithffyrdd helpu Steve i gael gafael ar gyllid ReAct i weithwyr sydd wedi colli eu swyddi yn y gorffennol. Cysylltwyd Steve â thîm Datblygu Busnes CNPT hefyd, a roddodd gymorth marchnata iddo. Dywedodd Steve "Nid yn unig y mae Gweithffyrdd wedi ein helpu i recriwtio staff newydd, ond maent wedi ein cefnogi gyda llawer o bethau. Mae Gweithffyrdd wedi ein cysylltu â'r bobl gywir. Maent yn gwybod pa gymorth sydd ar gael ac i bwy i ofyn." Un aelod newydd o'r tîm Skyline a gyflogwyd trwy Gweithffyrdd yw Leah Squibbs sy'n 25 oed o Lyncorrwg. Ar ôl colli ei swydd flaenorol, cafodd Leah wybod am swydd yng Nghaffi Skyline ar ôl cofrestru ar gyfer y prosiect cyflogaeth. Roedd hi wrth ei bodd i ymgeisio'n llwyddiannus am y swydd. Dywedodd Leah, "Daeth Gweithffyrdd o hyd i swydd i mi yn syth. Fe wnaethant fy helpu i brynu gwisg newydd a chael gafael ar gyllid REACT er mwyn i mi gael y tystysgrifau angenrheidiol i mi allu gweithio yn y caffi. Fyddwn i ddim wedi cael y swydd heb eu cymorth hwy." Dywedodd Ali Thomas, Arweinydd Cyngor Castell-nedd Port Talbot, "Mae'n wych clywed mwy o newyddion am y cymorth y mae Gweithffyrdd yn ei ddarparu i fusnesau lleol a thrigolion Castell-nedd Port Talbot. Mae Gweithffyrdd y De-orllewin yn gweithio'n agos â busnesau lleol, a u helpu gyda'u recriwtio. Mae Gweithffyrdd yn cefnogi'r cwmnïau hyn trwy hysbysebu swyddi gwag i'w gronfa o gyfranogwyr sy'n barod am waith, llunio rhestri byrion o ymgeiswyr, trefnu diwrnodau recriwtio ac archwilio llwybrau cefnogi busnes. Diolch i bawb a da iawn." gael Ffoniwch - 01639 684250 7

Pob aelod o deulu yng Nghastell-nedd yn dod o hyd i swyddi gyda chymorth Gweithffyrdd Mae tri pherson o'r un teulu wedi dod o hyd i swyddi parhaol yn gyflym oherwydd cymorth gan brosiect Gweithffyrdd y De-orllewin. Mae'r partneriaid Karen Thomas a Tony Darvell a Jacob, mab Karen, i gyd o Gastell-nedd, wedi dod o hyd i waith gydag amrywiaeth o gwmnïau lleol. Roedd Gweithffyrdd, a gefnogir gan 12.6 miliwn o Gronfa Gymdeithasol Ewrop trwy Lywodraeth Cymru, wedi rhoi amrywiaeth o gefnogaeth i'r tri gan gynnwys cymorth i chwilio am swyddi, cymorth i lunio CVs a ffurflenni cais a chyfle i gael hyfforddiant a swyddi dros dro. Roedd Tony, 45 oed, wedi bod yn ddi-waith am ddeng mlynedd yn gofalu am ei fam a fu farw y llynedd. Nid oedd ganddo unrhyw brofiad gwaith diweddar a dim cymwysterau. Gyda chymorth Gweithffyrdd, daeth Tony o hyd i swydd fel gweithiwr gyda Grŵp Derwen, gorsaf trosglwyddo gwastraff trwyddedig a gwneuthurwr agregau a ailgylchwyd ym Mynachlog Nedd. Yn y llun o r chwith i r de Tony Darvell, Jacob Williams a Karen Thomas Meddai Tony, "Mae gennym ferch 6 oed felly mae cael swydd wedi gwneud gwahaniaeth mawr. Mae gen i arian yn fy mhoced i brynu pethau iddi fynd i'r ysgol a hefyd i roi tipyn o faldod iddi." Wedi gweld y cymorth roedd Tony, ei phartner, yn ei gael gan Gweithffyrdd, cofrestrodd Karen gyda'r prosiect hefyd. Cafodd ei diswyddo o'i swydd mewn siop goffi ac roedd wedi bod yn cyflwyno ceisiadau am sawl swydd heb unrhyw lwyddiant. Roedd Gweithffyrdd wedi helpu i ail-fagu hyder Karen a dod o hyd i swydd iddi yn Nu Cofi, siop goffi yng Nghastell-nedd. Mae'r oriau rhan-amser yn ddelfrydol oherwydd mae'r ddau yn gallu gweithio heb unrhyw broblemau gofal plant. Meddai Karen Roedd Deb, fy mentor gyda Gweithffyrdd, yn wych. Roedd hi yno bob amser i siarad â hi. Mae Nu Cofi wedi bod yn gefnogol iawn hefyd. Mab Karen, Jacob, oedd aelod olaf o'r teulu i gofrestru gyda Gweithffyrdd. Ers gadael yr ysgol yn 2011, roedd wedi ymgymryd ag amrywiaeth o hyfforddeiaethau mis ond nid oedd wedi gallu sicrhau swydd barhaol. Cefnogodd Gweithffyrdd Jacob i fynychu cwrs gyda Sgil Cymru lle cafodd brofiad mewn amrywiaeth o grefftau. Enillodd gymhwyster i gael cerdyn diogelwch ar y safle gan roi hwb i'w hyder. Ar ddiwedd y cwrs, roedd wrth ei fodd i gael cynnig swydd fel labrwr gyda BDT Construction. Mis yn unig ar ôl cofrestru gyda Gweithffyrdd, cafodd Jacob swydd barhaol. Meddai Jacob, Roeddwn wrth fy modd i gael swydd mor gyflym. Rwy'n hapus fy mod yn gweithio gyda BDT. Meddai'r Cynghorydd Ali Thomas, Arweinydd Cyngor Castell-nedd Port Talbot, Mae'n wych clywed y newyddion bod 3 aelod o'r un teulu wedi dod o hyd i swyddi gyda chymorth Gweithffyrdd. Mae'n enghraifft wych o'r amrywiaeth o gefnogaeth y gall y prosiect ei gynnig." Ewch i www.workways.co.uk 8
